    Notes: Summary.  We describe a patient with haemophilia A and factor VIII inhibitor who underwent surgical excision of a large pseudotumour in the left femoral region. Haemostasis was successfully maintained with bolus doses of recombinant factor VIIa at 2-h intervals and anti-fibrinolytic therapy, and the pseudotumour was removed. Subsequently, the dose interval was gradually prolonged to 8 h for a total of 18 days. Although a spontaneous haemorrhage was observed on postoperative day 8, haemostasis was achieved by reducing the dosage interval. No adverse event occurred during the course of treatment.

    Notes: A haem receptor gene from Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (formerly known as Pasteurella piscicida) has been cloned, sequenced and analysed for its function. The gene, designated as pph, has an open reading frame consisting of 2154 bp, a predicted 718 amino acid residues and exists as a single copy. It is homologous with the haem receptors of Vibrio anguillarum hupA, V. cholerae hutA, V. mimicus mhuA and V. vulnificus hupA at 32.7, 32.7, 45.6 and 30.9%, respectively, and is highly conserved, consisting of a Phe-Arg-Ala-Pro sequence (FRAP), an iron transport related molecule (TonB) and a Asn-Pron-Asn-Leu sequence (NPNL), binding motifs associated with haem receptors. As a single gene knockout mutant P. damselae subsp. piscicida was able to bind haem in the absence of pph, suggesting that other receptors may be involved in its iron transport system. This study shows that the P. damselae subsp. piscicida pph belongs to the haem receptor family, is conserved and that its iron-binding system may involve more than one receptor.

    Notes: A compensation method is proposed by which the uniformly shielded area of the axial magnetic field in a relatively short, open-structure axial magnetic shield can be extended. An open-ended cylindrical magnetic shield of 120 cm in length, 52 cm inner diameter, and a ∼0.5 mm total thickness of the shielding material is used to demonstrate the idea. The shield axis is oriented along the horizontal component (∼320 mG) of the Earth's magnetic field. A simple way to increase the axial shielding factor is to use a pair of compensating coaxial ring coils set at both open ends of the shield. This increases, however, the radial gradient of the shielded field since the axial compensation field is stronger towards the shield axis. In order to decrease the radial gradient, an additional ring coil is wound around the middle part of the outer surface of the shield. The compensating field generated by this central ring coil is stronger towards the inner surface of the shield, and it helps, therefore, to unify the axial resultant field over a wider area inside the shield. The axial shielding factor obtained with this compensation according to the proposed method is 128, in contrast to only 16.4 obtained with compensation by a set of two ring coils. The field gradients observed are 1.2 μG/cm along the length direction and 2.7 μG/cm along the radial direction, in contrast to the 14 μG/cm axial and 78 μG/cm radial gradients obtained with compensation by a set of two ring coils. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract X-ray stress analysis is a standard nondestructive stress-measurement technique, but its use is limited in the sense that only a surface layer is surveyed. Recently, acoustoelasticity has emerged as a technique for nondestructive stress analysis. Acoustoelasticity makes use of stress-induced acoustic-birefringent effects. It gives stress distributions averaged through the thickness of a specimen. This technique is attractive because it does not require a transparent plastic model as photoelasticity does. However, much should be done before this method is established as a standard nondestructive technique of stress analysis. The most important among them is to separate stress-induced birefringence from that introduced by texture structure. For special cases, such as axisymmetric stress distributions and when a stress-free region is knowna priori, residual-stress distributions can be evaluated nondestructively. In this paper, we measured residual-stress distribution in a wide-flanged rolled beam by using a recently developed T-type transducer. The results were compared to those obtained from conventional destructive methods.
