Notes: A new type of variable-frequency radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac has been constructed as a new preinjector for the RIKEN heavy-ion linac (RILAC). The RFQ resonator, based on a folded-coaxial structure with a movable shorting plate, is compact even in a low frequency region below 20 MHz. It accelerates ions with mass-to-charge ratios of 5.3 to 26.4 in the energy range up to 450 keV per charge, by varying its resonant frequency from 17.4 to 39.0 MHz. Moreover, the power loss is small in the low frequency region; the rf power consumption in cw mode is 7 kW at 17.4 MHz, and it increases to 30 kW at 39.0 MHz at the maximum intervane voltage of 36.8 kV. We initiated this project in 1991, and installed the new preinjector consisting of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source of 18 GHz and this RFQ in 1996. Since the installation, the beam intensity has become larger by more than 1 order of magnitude than that formerly obtained with the Cockcroft–Walton preinjector. Recently, the maximum power of the beam extracted from the RILAC and that from the ring cyclotron has reached 560 W and 2 kW, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We successfully produced intense beams of highly charged metallic ions from various kinds of organic metallic compounds by the metal ions from volatile compounds method and solid materials in RIKEN 18 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) (e.g., 135 eμA of Fe11+, 80 eμA of Fe13+, 10 eμA of Os29+, and 1 eμA of Os37+). Using this ECRIS the ion confinement time of highly charged ions was determined under the pulsed mode operation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The stimulated emission cross section is calculated on the basis of emission spectrum and spontaneous lifetime measurements. The maximum stimulated emission cross section is determined to be 0.69×10−20 cm2. A comparison is made between the calculated stimulated emission cross section and one which has been determined from laser oscillation experiments. Fair agreement between them is obtained within a 20% error at wavelengths from 770 to 810 nm.

Notes: Absorption, emission, and excitation spectra of Ce-doped Gd2 SiO5 have been measured. The emission spectrum is decomposed into two Gaussian bands corresponding to the transitions from Ce3+ 5d 2 T2 to two 4f levels of 2 F7/2 and 2 F5/2 . It is found that the energy difference between ground 2 F5/2 and 2 F7/2 levels varies from 2004 to 1326 cm−1 with increasing Ce concentration from 0.2% to 1%. Concentration quenching is weak in Ce-doped Gd2 SiO5 compared with that in the laser and fluorescent materials. The energy-level structure is determined for Ce3+ in Gd2 SiO5 based on the analyses of the optical spectra. The spectral characteristics indicate that the Ce-doped Gd2 SiO5 crystal is suitable for the application to the scintillation detector.

Notes: We report the second known case of yolk sac tumour of the external auditory canal, occurring in an eight-month-old girl. The excised tumour demonstrated histopathological and immunohistochemical features identical to those of yolk sac tumours of gonadal origin. The tumour was aneuploid by flow cytometry. The patient received chemotherapy post-operatively and has had no evidence of disease 13 months after surgery.

Notes: Joining technology of CP-Titanium and Titanium alloy is very important for manufacturingfield. In that case of titanium brazing, chemical compositions of brazing filler metal and brazingatmosphere are very important. In this study, CP-Ti/CP-Ti and Ti alloy/Stainless Steel were brazedwith Ti-based laminated brazing filler metal by using continuous type furnace under Ar gasatmosphere containing extremely low oxygen.Laminated filler was fabricated by roll bonding technology. Chemical compositions oflaminated filler metal used in this study were Ti-15Cu-15Ni and Ti-20Zr-20Cu-20Ni. Brazingtemperature employed in this study was 850, 900, 950, and 1000 C. These brazing temperatures werebased on thermal analysis results and alpha-beta transformation temperature of the base metal used inthis study. Firstly melting properties of laminated brazing filler metal was investigated with DTA andDSC. Secondary joint characteristics were estimated by micro-structural observation at the joint andmechanical properties measurement.Sound joint was obtained in this study according to outside appearance of the specimen.Ti-20Zr-20Cu-20Ni filler had low melting point as compared with Ti-15Cu-15Ni according tothermal analysis results and fillet form-ability. Ni and Cu were diffused from molten brazing filler tobase metal during brazing and Ti-Cu-Ni eutectoid reaction was took placed at the based metal duringcooling after brazing

Notes: Abstract When BY-2 cultured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) cells were transferred to auxin-depleted culture medium containing cytokinin (benzyladenine, 1 mg/l), the starch content per cell started increasing from 18 h of culture and amyloplasts had formed by 48 h. Pulse-treatment of the cells with actinomycin D and cycloheximide for the first 12 h (or longer) of culture significantly decreased the cellular starch content after 48 h, whereas the starch content did not decrease significantly when the cells were released from the inhibition within 6 h. This suggests that nuclear gene expression necessary for amyloplast formation begins 6–12 h after the transfer. Immunoblotting analysis of the accumulation of ADP-glucose starch glycosyl transferase (starch synthase) supported this inference.
