Notes: Fusion pellet implosion by laser-generated x rays was investigated by means of time-integrated spectroscopic measurements. Deuterium fuel was seeded with a small amount of Ar in order to determine the electron temperature and the density of the compressed fuel from, respectively, the emission intensity ratio and the broadening of the Lyβ (Ar17+1s-3p) and Heβ (Ar16+1s2-1s3p) lines. Comparison of the observed results with volume-averaged temperatures and densities obtained from one-dimensional (1-D) fluid-dynamic simulations showed large discrepancies at maximum compression. One possible explanation is that the fuel is stably compressed until the beginning of pusher deceleration by collision with a reflected shock wave from the pellet center, and that further compression during the deceleration phase is terminated in particular for heavy stagnation cases. Similar results were obtained for fusion output. Experimentally obtained neutron yields were close to those from the 1-D simulations at the beginning of the deceleration but a factor of 10–100 less than those expected at maximum compression. These results were examined in terms of shell disintegration in the acceleration phase and pusher–fuel mixing at the contact surface in the deceleration phase due to growth of initial perturbations of the pellet resulting from fluid instabilities. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Generation of extra facets on ridge-type triangles with (001)-, (110)-, and (201)-related equivalent slopes on GaAs (111) A substrates and stripes running in the [1¯10], [110], and [100] directions on (001) substrates during molecular beam epitaxy of GaAs/AlGaAs multilayers was investigated. By investigating local variation in layer thickness in the regions adjacent to extra (114)A, (110), and (1¯1¯1¯)B facets common to the (111)A and (001) patterned substrates and extra facets specific to the respective substrates and growth rates of the facets relative to the growth rate on the substrate plane, the orientation-dependent Ga surface diffusion length, λGa, was elucidated as λGa(001)(approximate)λGa(1¯1¯3¯)B〈{λGa(1¯1¯1 ¯)B,λGa(3¯3¯1¯)B,λGa(013),λGa(113)A}〈λGa(159)(approximate)λGa(114)A(approximate)λGa(111)A〈λGa(110). That is, λGa increases in the order of the (001), (1¯1¯1¯)B-related, (111)A-related, and (110) surfaces.

Notes: Abstract— Dopamine-β-hydroxylase (DBH) activity in serum was decreased significantly in schizophrenic patients (16.17 ± 12.60 μmol/min/1 of serum, mean ± S.D., n = 149) when compared with that of normal controls (42.53 ± 30.94 μmol/min/1 of serum, mean ± S.D., n= 153) and neurotic patients. Long duration of disease did not cause any significant changes in serum DBH activity except a tendency for increase in patients of lodger than 18 years duration. We also examined the possibility that the serum DBH deficiency in the schizophrenic group was an artifact of treatment with antipsychotic drugs, especially phenothiazines. No significant difference was observed between the patients treated with the drugs and the patients not receiving the drugs.

Notes: We report the first use of toroidally bent crystals to record two-dimensional, spatially resolved, monochromatic images of laser-produced fusion plasma. The electron temperature was determined by seeding the deuterium fuel with argon and evaluating the intensity ratio of the two monochromatic images in the Ar+ 17Ly β and the Ar+ 16He β lines. Silicon and germanium crystals were chosen to achieve high diffraction reflectivities. Spatial resolution better than 10 μm was achieved by bending the crystals toroidally to minimize the geometrical aberrations [E. Förster, K. Gäbel, and I. Uschmann, Laser Particle Beams 9, 135 (1991)]. Comparison of the two line intensities requires a calibrated imaging system. Monochromatic images of fusion pellets driven with the GEKKO XII glass laser system are presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Si(111)-7×7 area surrounded by the Si(111)-(square root of)3×(square root of)3R30°-Ga region has been observed by scanning tunneling microscopy during the thermal desorption of Ga atoms at ∼600 °C and after the desorption. The 7×7 area exhibits triangular and strip patterns on the nanometer scale for the Si(111) substrates tilting toward the [112¯] and [1¯1¯2] directions, respectively. This is because faulted halves of the 7×7 reconstruction are adjacent to the (square root of)3×(square root of)3-Ga area on the boundary between the 7×7 and (square root of)3×(square root of)3-Ga areas during Ga desorption. It has been found that strip patterns with nanometer-scale precision are formed on the Si(111) substrates tilting toward the [1¯1¯2] direction. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Temperature and polarization characteristics of 1.55-μm-band LiNbO3 quasiphase-matched (QPM) wavelength converters have been studied by second-harmonic generation (SHG). It is found that the shift of the QPM wavelength is linearly proportional to temperature over the measured temperature range between 10 and 40 °C, with a temperature tolerance (corresponding to a 3 dB reduction in the QPM conversion efficiency) of greater than 10 °C for a 10-mm-long device. With respect to the angle θ of the injected fundamental light polarization direction, the SHG power changes as a function of sin4 θ, with a tolerance of over 60°. Theoretical explanations for the observed results are also presented. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Assimilation of nitrogen dioxide in response to fumigation with 15N-labelled nitrogen dioxide was studied in 217 plant taxa. The taxa included 50 wild herbaceous plants collected from roadsides (42 genera, 15 families), 60 cultivated herbaceous plants (55 genera, 30 families) and 107 cultivated woody plants (74 genera, 45 families). Two parameters, the ‘NO2-N content’, or NO2-derived reduced nitrogen content in fumigated plant leaves (mg N g–1 dry weight), and the ‘NO2-utilization index’, or percentage of the NO2-derived reduced nitrogen in the total reduced nitrogen, were determined. The NO2-N content differed 657-fold between the highest (Eucalyptus viminalis; 6·57) and lowest (Tillandsia ionantha and T. caput-medusae; 0·01) values in the 217 taxa; 62-fold in a family (Theaceae) and 26-fold in a species (Solidago altissima). Nine species had NO2-utilization indices greater than 10%, of which Magnolia kobus, Eucalyptus viminalis, Populus nigra, Nicotiana tabacum and Erechtites hieracifolia had NO2-N contents 〉 4·9. These plants can be considered ‘NO2-philic’ because in them NO2-nitrogen has an important function(s). The Compositae and Myrtaceae had high values for both parameters, whereas the monocots and gymnosperms had low ones. These findings suggest that the metabolic pathway of NO2-nitrogen differs among plant species. The information presented here will be useful for creating a novel vegetation technology to reduce the atmospheric concentration of nitrogen dioxide.

Notes: We studied seven analytical methods of estimating the plasma volume from the decay curves of indocyanine green. Fifteen volunteers received 1.0 mgkg−1 of the dye by intravenous injection and the plasma concentration was measured continuously using spectrophotometry. Plasma volumes were calculated using three single-regression methods (1-a, 1-b, 1-c) and four biexponential regression methods (2-a, 2-b, 2-c, 2-d). The means (SD) of 1-a, 1-b and 1-c were 39 (5.0), 44 (5.7) and 54 (11.5) mlkg−1, respectively, and these were significantly different from each other (p 〈 0.05). The values for methods 2-b, 2-c and 2-d were similar to each other: 39 (4.6), 40 (4.1) and 40 (4.0) mlkg−1, respectively. These required more than 3 min circulation or mixing time. When the time allowed for mixing was less than 3 min (method 2-a) the plasma volume was underestimated. We conclude that plasma volume estimation using indocyanine green and spectrophotometry is most accurate when the mixing time is adequate (3–5 min) and the decay curves are analysed using biexponential regression.
