    Notes: Enhanced expression of decay-accelerating factor and CD59/homologous restriction factor 20 in intestinal metaplasia, gastric adenomas and intestinal-type gastric carcinomas but not in diffuse-type carcinomas Aims: Variable expression of the complement regulatory proteins, decay-accelerating factor, CD59/homologous restriction factor 20 (HRF20) and membrane cofactor protein has been shown in human gastrointestinal malignancies, but their expression in gastric cancer has not been fully described. Thus, we immunohistochemically defined the distribution of these proteins in human normal gastric mucosa, intestinal metaplasia, adenomas and gastric cancers. Methods and results: Gastric tissues were obtained by endoscopic biopsy or surgical resection and stained with mouse monoclonal antibodies to decay-accelerating factor, CD59/HRF20, and membrane cofactor protein. In the normal gastric mucosa, membrane cofactor protein was diffusely stained on the basolateral surface of epithelial cells, whereas the expression of decay-accelerating factor and CD59/HRF20 was inconspicuous. In intestinal metaplasia, adenoma and intestinal-type gastric carcinoma cells, decay-accelerating factor and HRF20 were intensely stained on the apical surface; membrane cofactor protein retained its location on the basolateral surface. In diffuse-type gastric carcinomas, the expression of decay-accelerating factor, CD59/HRF20 was lost, but membrane cofactor protein was present on the tumour cell surface. Conclusions: These findings suggest that membrane cofactor protein plays a primary role in the regulation of complement activation in normal and neoplastic gastric cells and that the expression pattern of the complement regulatory proteins is closely related to gastric carcinoma development.

    Notes: Fusion pellet implosion by laser-generated x rays was investigated by means of time-integrated spectroscopic measurements. Deuterium fuel was seeded with a small amount of Ar in order to determine the electron temperature and the density of the compressed fuel from, respectively, the emission intensity ratio and the broadening of the Lyβ (Ar17+1s-3p) and Heβ (Ar16+1s2-1s3p) lines. Comparison of the observed results with volume-averaged temperatures and densities obtained from one-dimensional (1-D) fluid-dynamic simulations showed large discrepancies at maximum compression. One possible explanation is that the fuel is stably compressed until the beginning of pusher deceleration by collision with a reflected shock wave from the pellet center, and that further compression during the deceleration phase is terminated in particular for heavy stagnation cases. Similar results were obtained for fusion output. Experimentally obtained neutron yields were close to those from the 1-D simulations at the beginning of the deceleration but a factor of 10–100 less than those expected at maximum compression. These results were examined in terms of shell disintegration in the acceleration phase and pusher–fuel mixing at the contact surface in the deceleration phase due to growth of initial perturbations of the pellet resulting from fluid instabilities. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Background. In Japan, the elderly population is growing rapidly, and therefore, so is the number of cancer patients who are not good candidates for aggressive surgery or chemotherapy. Radiation therapy offers excellent potential for the treatment of such patients, with minimal invasion and functional preservation. A Patterns of Care Study (PCS) examined the parameters of treatments used for patients with esophageal cancer to determine nationwide variations by age. Methods. From July 1996 through February 1997, external nationwide PCS audits were performed for 29 institutions. Medical charts were reviewed for 455 patients with thoracic esophageal cancer treated between 1992 and 1994. The parameters of treatments used for these patients were compared between those aged ≥75 years (elderly; n = 113) and those aged 〈75 years (yourger; n = 342). Results. Surgery was used in 49% of the younger group and in 17% of the elderly group (P 〈 0.0001) while chemotherapy was used in 48% of the younger and 24% of the older group (P 〈 0.0001). The ratio of non-surgery group with radiation therapy increased significantly from 49% to 82% (P 〈 0.0001). Approximately 70% of the non-surgery patients received an external radiation dose of more than 60Gy, even in the elderly (P = 0.3001). Preliminary results showed no significant difference in survival between the two age groups (P = 0.5559). Conclusions. The use of radiation therapy in elderly people with esophageal cancer has increased markedly. The PCS provided important information about variations in radiotherapy parameters in patients with esophageal cancer in relation to age. Such information should be useful for future prospective studies of the elderly.
