Notes: [Auszug] Pollen analysis is well established in palaeogeographical research,, but it remains an underused resource in forensic science,. So far it has been used to investigate only one reported case of murder, but has not to our knowledge been used to determine the time of death. We examined a common ...

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Case: A newborn infant was treated in hospital because of suspected pneumonia and renal insufficiency at the third day post partum. Seven days later, shortly after having been nursed by her mother, the newborn vomited an eucalyptus oil-smelling liquid, which was collected in a diaper. This liquid and the liquid obtained from a gastrolavage performed immediately afterwards were secured in air-tight bottles. The family of the newborn laid a charge against the hospital for bodily harm caused by negligence reproaching the hospital for having wilfully given the newborn a toxic substance. Discussion: Only by means of advanced analytical methods (mikroheadspace GC/MS and GC/MS) which permit a subtle separation of mixtures of volatile oils, the reproach against the hospital could be refuted and the suspicion against the mother confirmed. In connection with the clinical picture which is discussed with reference to the relevant literature, and the investigation results of the police, the mother was deprived of the custody of her child, and the child was placed into the custody of the youth welfare office.

Notes: Abstract This report gives the results of two population studies on HumD3S1358 from a northern and a southern region of Germany. The numbers of unrelated individuals were 326 and 666, respectively and seven main alleles, three rare allelic variants and 29 different genotypes were encountered. No significant statistical differences were seen between the northern and southern populations. The HumD3S1358 allele distributions were in agreement with Hardy-Weinberg expectations and two mutations were found in 780 meiotic events.

Notes: Abstract Subarachnoidal application of the complement C5a fragment was used to induce acute experimental meningitis in rabbits and rats within 30–60 min. The early stages of the cellular inflammatory response were studied by means of flow cytometry, transmission electron microscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy. Infiltration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) into the subarachnoidal space was the earliest event of the inflammatory reaction. By morphological criteria we found that PMN interacted with cells of the mononuclear-macrophage lineage (MML) and the marginal astrocytes via pseudopodia, whereas the pial cells were not involved in early stages of the inflammatory response. The number of invaded MML that were positive with the ED2 marker increased, indicating the hematogenous origin of the immigrating cell population. PMN were found to infiltrate the perivascular space of the marginal arterial vessel segments. This perivascular infiltration was assumed to be the first manifestation of cerebral vasculitis. The intimate association of resident cerebral cells (astrocytes) with invading PMN and MML is suggestive of a transient interaction of these cell types.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Ochronosis is a rare disorder of tyrosin catabolism with an autosomal, recessive trait. Clinical signs predominantly affect the locomotor system. Inflammatory episodes in large joints can mimick Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Brownish discoloration of sclerae and cartilage is characteristic, diagnosis is confirmed by typical changes of spinal X-rays and the finding of homogentisic acid in urine samples. We describe a case of a 53 year old female patient with ochronosis and a second diagnosis of RA.

Notes: 45S5 Bioglass® coatings have been produced on superelastic nickel-titanium wires usingelectrophoretic deposition (EPD). Aqueous suspensions of Bioglass® particles (〈 5 &m meanparticle size) were used. EPD led to the formation of thick and uniform coatings covering the wiresvery homogeneously, without the development of any microcracks during the drying stage. Bestresults were achieved with suspensions containing 20 wt% Bioglass®, an applied voltage of 5 V,and a deposition time of 5 min. Samples sintered for 1 hour at temperatures 〉 800 °C exhibiteddiffusion of nickel and titanium into the Bioglass® coating. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)was used to analyse the microstructure of the Bioglass® coatings in terms of level of uniformity, densification, and to discover the possible presence of microcracks, as well as to gain informationabout the thickness of the coating produced on the different substrates. The results demonstrate thatthe EPD technique is a very convenient method to produce uniform Bioglass® coatings on wires forbiomedical applications

Notes: Abstract The localization of the neural cell adhesion molecule L1 in the male urogenital tract (including seminal vesicles and prostate) of the mouse and bull was investigated using immunocytochemical and immunochemical methods in order to better understand the function of this glycoprotein in non-neural tissues. L1 antibodies labeled non-myelinated nerves in all portions of the urogenital tract investigated. However, L1 immunoreactivity was also found between epithelial cells of several regions of the urogenital system including epididymal tail, deferent duct, ejaculatory duct and seminal vesicles. Some L1 immunoreactivity was also demonstrated between epithelial cells of murine urinary bladder and urethra. The specificity of the immunoreaction was verified by western blots. There was no correlation between L1 expression and proliferating activity as revealed by double immunocytochemistry using various markers of cell proliferation. This unexpected expression of L1 in nonneural tissue is mainly restricted to non-proliferating epithelia of those portions of the urogenital tract that are derived from the Wolffian duct. It is suggested that L1 in these epithelia could enhance the mechanical resistance and reduce transepithelial permeability.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to evaluate mid- and long-term results of ultrasonically guided ethanol injection into parathyroid adenomas. From 1988 to 1996, 27 patients (mean age 77 ± 13 years) were treated for parathyroid adenomas by percutaneous ethanol injection. The survey included clinical information, plasma calcium, phosphorus and PTH (1–84) evaluation. Follow-up lasted 22.6 ± 10 months. No major complications were observed for 63 ethanol injections. Biochemical recovery was 58 %, biochemical improvement at 3 months was 33 %, and failure was 7 %. Four of 15 cured patients presented a recurrence of the disease 1 or 2 years after the first treatment. Ultrasonically guided ethanol injection can be useful in the treatment of parathyroid adenomas when surgery is not possible. The immediate results are interesting but not as good as those obtained with surgery. A regular biochemical survey is necessary so that recurrences can be recognized and treated at an early stage.
