Notes: [Auszug] Pollen analysis is well established in palaeogeographical research,, but it remains an underused resource in forensic science,. So far it has been used to investigate only one reported case of murder, but has not to our knowledge been used to determine the time of death. We examined a common ...

Notes: Exposure of naturally infected or inoculated cotton plants (Gossypium hirsutum cv. Acala) to sunlight greatly increased the expression of Alternaria alternata symptoms. Exposure for 8 h was sufficient to produce the effect, which occurred in plants of different age and under a range of conditions of temperature and wetness. The latter included marginal but recurrent dew periods interrupted by dryness by day. The effect of sunlight was also evident in G. barbadense (cv. Pima). Symptomless infections were detected in apparently healthy tissue of inoculated plants and were more frequent in those not exposed to sunlight. It is postulated that sunlight triggers the development of symptomless infections into visible lesions.

Notes: In large commercial fields, the ratio of Alternaria macrospora to A. alternata lesions was 1:0-4 in cv. Pima and 1:19 in cv. Acala. The frequency of A. alternata on Pima and of A. macrospora on Acala increased in an experimental field with mixed Pima and Acala plots. In both cultivars disease was inhibited by fungicidal treatment and by removal of flowers. For all parameters measured (leaf area, number of leaves, flowers and bolls, and yield), the responses to treatments were greater in Pima than in Acala.

Notes: Abstract. This paper shows in detail the application of a new stochastic approach for the characterization of surface height profiles, which is based on the theory of Markov processes. With this analysis we achieve a characterization of the scale dependent complexity of surface roughness by means of a Fokker-Planck or Langevin equation, providing the complete stochastic information of multiscale joint probabilities. The method is applied to several surfaces with different properties, for the purpose of showing the utility of this method in more detail. In particular we show evidence of the Markov properties, and we estimate the parameters of the Fokker-Planck equation by pure, parameter-free data analysis. The resulting Fokker-Planck equations are verified by numerical reconstruction of the conditional probability density functions. The results are compared with those from the analysis of multi-affine and extended multi-affine scaling properties which is often used for surface topographies. The different surface structures analysed here show in detail the advantages and disadvantages of these methods.

Notes: Abstract The nucleation effect of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) to low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and the structure of the resulting directional LDPE morphology was studied using thermo-optics, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction and microfractography. Thermo-optics and DSC showed a higher nucleation activity of HDPE compared with the heterogeneities within the LDPE melt. The parallel and more perfect arrangement of the chain segments in transcrystalline LDPE resulted in a higher melting temperature, a difference in unit-cell spacing and a less ductile behaviour during fracture than with spherulitic LDPE.

Description / Table of Contents: The morphology of high density polyethylene filled with chalk, suprasil and sodium chloride powder, respectively, has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy of the polished and etched surfaces. All composites show a different morphology of the polyethylene in the interfacial region. This effect is due to the different structure determining activities of the used fillers.

Description / Table of Contents: The case of a transcrystalline morphology in LD-PE is choosen as a model for the study of an interfacial region in polymer solids. The investigations by light microscopy, SEM and DSC include the nucleation conditions, structure, and morphology. The different nucleation ability of the nuclei leading to spherulitic or transcrystalline morphology is not detectable by DSC.
