Notes: Laser ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry has been used to probe Nd:YAG laser ablation products from a new graphite-like material of (BC2N)n composition. Neutral species mainly composed of one, two, and three atoms were detected. A center-of-mass velocity of 1.2×105 cm/s was obtained for the expansion of the products. An influence of collision-induced reactions is suggested for the product generation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background  Tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α-converting enzyme (TACE) is a metalloproteinase-disintegrin that releases soluble TNF-α from cells by cleaving within the extracellular domain of membrane-bound pro-TNF-α. It was proposed that TNF-α is involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, and it is therefore suggested that TACE has important roles in psoriasis. However, it is unclear whether TACE is expressed in psoriatic tissue. Objectives  To clarify whether TACE is expressed in psoriatic lesions and whether expression levels of TACE mRNA are increased in lesional compared with nonlesional psoriatic skin. Methods  Skin biopsies were obtained from patients with psoriasis. We examined the expression of TACE in psoriatic tissues using a novel real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction method and immunohistochemical analysis. Results  There was a significant rise in the level of TACE mRNA expression in lesional psoriatic skin compared with nonlesional skin in all patients. There was a statistically significant rise in the level of TACE mRNA expression in lesional psoriatic skin compared with nonlesional skin (mean ± SD TACE/glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase ratio 0·031 ± 0·012 vs. 0·009 ± 0·002, P 〈 0·05). In lesional psoriatic skin, immunostaining with anti-TACE antibody was present throughout all layers of the epidermis. TACE immunostaining was found in the cytoplasm of keratinocytes. There was staining associated with blood vessels in the papillary dermis and perivascular inflammatory cells. In particular, mast cells showed strong staining. They contained numerous granules that were stained for TACE in the cytoplasm. Conclusions  The findings of the present study suggest that elevation of TACE mRNA in psoriatic lesions is due to many cells, particularly mast cells, that function in lesional psoriatic skin as an important source of TNF-α and other cytokines.

Notes: Summary  Choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) is a rare malignant brain tumour which occurs predominantly in childhood. We present the cases of two infants with CPC. One, a 6-month-old boy with the tumour in the right lateral ventricle, who died of a postoperative intracranial haemorrhage and severe gastrointestinal bleeding, and the other, a 9-month-old boy with the tumour in the fourth ventricle, who has been well without recurrence for 12 months after total removal in combination with chemotherapy using cisplatin and VP-16 and local radiotherapy. In the 54 CPC cases in children under 2 years of age including our 2 cases in which the clinical results were described in the literature since 1983, tumour location (lateral ventricle, p=0.0225), surgery (gross total resection, p=0.0447), and chemotherapy (yes, p=0.0010) were revealed to be significant positive prognostic factors by the univariate analysis using the log rank test, and surgery (gross total removal, p=0.0259) and chemotherapy (yes, p=0.0016) were independent, significant positive prognostic factors in the multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazard regression model. Although there is a risk in doing a statistical analysis of other people's reports, these results suggest that, at present, the gross total removal of the tumour with intensive chemotherapy is the best choice of initial treatment for young children with CPC, and that radiotherapy should be considered for patients after 24 months of age and/or should be performed locally.

Notes: Abstract To investigate the effect of fructose ingestion on sorbitol and fructose 3-phosphate (F3P) in erythrocytes, we administered 50 g fructose with and without treatment with an aldose reductase inhibitor, epalrestat, to seven healthy, normal-glucose-tolerant, male volunteers aged 20–43 years. The same subjects were given 50 g glucose on another day. The sorbitol and F3P contents in their erythrocytes increased significantly, reaching peak levels at 60 min and 180 min, respectively, following fructose ingestion. On the other hand, glucose ingestion did not cause any statistically significant change in sorbitol content in their erythrocytes, although it significantly elevated their F3P content. Treatment with epalrestat had no significant effect on incremental changes in erythrocyte sorbitol and F3P content following fructose ingestion. This suggests that oral fructose may be converted directly to sorbitol and F3P in erythrocytes instead of being converted via glucose. Thus, the dietary intake of fructose may affect the concentrations of sorbitol and F3P in erythrocytes in normal men.

Notes: Abstract Storage moduli (G′) of hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica suspensions in trans-decalin and in trans-decalin solutions of polystyrene (PS) have been measured by taking account of PS adsorption. PS were adsorbed on the hydrophilic silica. TheG′ values of the hydrophilic suspensions in the presence of low molecular weight PS are similar to those without PS and they are larger than those in the presence of higher molecular weight PS. On the other hand, any PS chains cannot adsorb on the hydrophobic silica particles. TheG′ values of all hydrophobic suspensions are higher than that in trans-decalin due to depletion flocculation and they are two orders of magnitude larger than those for the hydrophilic silica suspensions.

Notes: Abstract Positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR) ceramics with low resistivities at room temperature were obtained by using oxalate-derived barium titanate powders. The average room-temperature resistivity of the PTCR ceramics was 4Ω cm, and the magnitude of their PTCR jump was around four orders with a voltage proof of more than 50 Vmm−1. These PTCR properties are significantly influenced by the calcination temperature of the starting materials and by the resultant properties of the ceramic bodies. The microstructure of such-PTCR ceramics with a low room-temperature resistivity produced in this study was found to be rather heterogeneous. Complex impedance measurements revealed that the resistivity of the present PTCR materials was determined predominantly by the grain-boundary resistance even at room temperature.
