Notes: The diffusion and n-type doping of Si into GaAs from a novel diffusion source consisting of an undoped SiOx/SiN double-layered film were achieved by rapid thermal annealing at 860–940 °C. The film properties of the double-layered films employed as Si diffusion sources are experimentally presented. The characteristics of the Si diffused layers were investigated by secondary ion mass spectrometry, capacitance-voltage measurement, and the Hall method. The carrier profiles exceeded 2×1018 cm−3 and featured an abrupt diffusion front, while a maximum electron concentration of 6×1018 cm−3 was obtained at 940 °C. The diffused Si profiles were consistent with the SiGa+−VGa− pair diffusion model.

Notes: Mucous melanomas on the lip are very rare. None of the few available reports has provided a comparison of dermoscopic and histopathological findings. We describe a 33-year-old Japanese man with a mucous melanoma on the lower lip and present a comparison of our dermoscopic and histopathological findings.

Notes: The effect of phonon confinement and impurity doping in silicon nanowires (SiNWs)synthesized by laser ablation were investigated. The diameter of SiNWs was controlled by thesynthesis parameters during laser ablation and the subsequent thermal oxidation. Thermal oxidationincreases the thickness of the SiNWs’ surface oxide layer, resulting in a decrease in their crystallineSi core diameter. This effect causes a downshift and asymmetric broadening of the Si optical phononpeak due to phonon confinement. Boron doping was also performed during the growth of SiNWs.Local vibrational modes of boron (B) in silicon nanowires (SiNWs) synthesized by laser ablationwere observed at about 618 and 640 cm–1 by Raman scattering measurements. Fano broadening dueto coupling between discrete optical phonons and the continuum of interband hole excitations wasalso observed in the Si optical phonon peak. These results prove that B atoms were doped in theSiNWs

Notes: Abstract Forty-one hips in 38 elderly patients with osteoarthritis of the hips, operated on with joint preserving techniques at the age of 55 years or more, were analyzed clinically radiologically. Bilateral involvement was seen in 13 cases. Ten hips were operated on after this study, before the patients were 55 years old, or no operation has yet been done. The average age at operation was 59 years, and the average preoperative hip scores (Merle d'Aubigné) were as follows: pain 2.8; range of motion (ROM) 4.4; gait 3.4. Average preoperative hip flexion and abduction were 88° and 20° respectively. Mean follow-up period was 57 months, and mean final hip scores were: pain 5.1; ROM 4.6; gait 4.0. Significant improvement was seen in pain and gait scores but no improvement in ROM scores. Excellent and good scores were achieved in half of the cases. Failure was seen in four cases. Hip pain recurred in nine patients. Five out of these patients were classified as atrophic according to Bombelli's classification of osteoblastic response of osteoarthritis of the hip. The responsiveness of the femoral head influenced the clinical results of the joint-preserving operations.

Notes: Abstract Various reports of ionospheric responses during the August 1972 storm events are reviewed with respect to the phenomena in three major world sectors, N-S America, Afro-Europe, and Austro-Asia, in order to have a global picture. Emphasized highlights are (1) extensive investigation of the sudden increase of the total electron content estimated from Faraday-rotation measurements of satellite signals; (2) a dramatic upward surge above 300 km altitude, soon after a flare, measured by the Millstone Hill incoherent scatter radar; (3) electron density profiles, electric fields and conductivities, and neutral winds, at the time of the geomagnetic storm sudden commencement and during the succeeding storms, measured by the Chatanika incoherent scatter radar; and, (4) approximately 2.5-h oscillatory F2 density variations in Eastern Asia during the F2 storm main phase. To show temporal variations of the latitudinal distributions of storm-time F2 electron densities, in three longitudinal sectors separated about 60° longitude each, newly investigated results of the F2 hourly data at 35 stations in the Asia-Australia-Pacific sector are then exhibited. Finally, current theories or at least theoretical ideas of ionospheric storm mechanisms are briefly introduced, and a few remarks on the August events in the light of those theories are presented.
