Notes: A biochemical procedure is described to purify the T-cell mitogen in the supernatant of cultured Mycoplasma arthritidis organisms. The mitogenic material was bound on an affigel blue column. The eluate of this column was then acylated at 0°C for 1.5 h and subsequently chromatography on a Sepharose C1 6B and a Superose 12HR column were performed. SDS-PAGE showed a major band at MW 26,000 and some minor bands at 50,000. With this material biological tests were performed, including induction of lymphoproliferation and interferon induction in murine spleen cell cultures. Purified Mycoplasma arthritidis supernatant (MAS) vigorously stimulated spleen cell cultures of A/J, CBA, C3H/He, and DBA/2 mice, whereas a low-grade hut definitive response was observed in C57BL/6 spleen cells. Cultures of Balb/c nu/nu mice, in contrast to those of their euthymic littermates, were non-reactive. When induction of interferon was tested, a marked response to purified MAS was observed in CBA and C3H/HeJ spleen cell cultures, whereas C57BL/6 spleen cells were non-reactive.

Notes: Abstract Global configuration of magnetic field in several spiral galaxies were determined by analysing characteristic variation of Faraday rotation within the galaxy disks. The majority has an open spiral, bisymmetric field configuration, while some (10–20%) have a ring field.

Notes: Abstract The HFB-Theory is combined with the projection method in order to account for the rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian. It is shown that the cranking model provides a special solution of the “projected” HFB-Equations which result from a minimization of the projected energy.

Notes: Summary The quantity of oxytocin in the cerebrospinal fluid is decreased by brain atrophy and infantile brain damage, not injured by multiple sclerosis but increased by meningitis, sciatica and drug controlled convulsions. Immediately after a seizure, the oxytocin level is very strong raised.

Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.

Notes: Abstract A new type of CO2-laser with high-power capability is described. It employs fast axial flow driven by a high-frequency radial impeller. Due to the coaxial design which integrates discharge tube, blower, and gas cooler into a single cylindrical housing, a very compact laser unit is realized. The discharge is rf excited (13.56 MHz). With a specific input power of 21 W/cm3 an output of 800 W is generated at an efficiency of 16%. The discharge can easily be operated in a pulsed mode with frequencies up to 10 kHz.

Notes: Abstract The hypothesis that large-scale shocks accompanying spiral density waves are the main sources of cosmic-ray electrons for whole galactic disks has been tested utilizing results of 10.7 GHz observations of spiral galaxies. It is suggested that the 10.7 GHz emission of galactic disks is largely controlled by star-forming processes, and that large-scale shocks apparently play a minor role.

Notes: Abstract. An experiment on the radiative π{+}-meson photoproduction from the proton ( γp → γπ{+}n) was carried out at the Mainz Microtron MAMI in the kinematic region 537MeV 〈 Eγ 〈 817MeV, 140°≤ $ \theta_{{\gamma \gamma ^{\prime }}}^{{{{\rm cm}}}}$ ≤180°. The π{+}-meson polarizabilities have been determined from a comparison of the data with the predictions of two different theoretical models, the first one being based on an effective pole model with pseudoscalar coupling while the second one is based on diagrams describing both resonant and nonresonant contributions. The validity of the models has been verified by comparing the predictions with the present experimental data in the kinematic region where the pion polarizability contribution is negligible ( s1 〈 5mπ2) and where the difference between the predictions of the two models does not exceed 3%. In the region, where the pion polarizability contribution is substantial ( 5 〈 s1/mπ2 〈 15, -12 〈 t/mπ2 〈 - 2), the difference $\ensuremath{(\alpha -\beta )_{\pi^{+}}}$ of the electric (α) and the magnetic (β) polarizabilities has been determined. As a result we find $\ensuremath{(\alpha -\beta )_{\pi^{+}}=(11.6\pm 1.5_{{\rm stat}}\pm 3.0_{{\rm syst}}\pm 0.5_{{\rm mod}})\times 10^{-4}{}{\rm fm^{3}}}$ . This result is at variance with recent calculations in the framework of chiral perturbation theory.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the stability of spherical HFB states against deformation may be completely altered if angular momentum conservation is taken into account exactly, leading to a smooth transition from spherical to deformed nuclei. Furthermore the close connection between the stability matrix in HFB theory and the RPA matrix is destroyed by angular momentum projection.
