Notes: The results are reported of a 2-year plot experiment investigating the potential of lucerne as a silage crop in a comparatively high-rainfall area (annual average of about 900 mm). The performance of the lucerne on the remainder of the field in which the plot experiment was located is also discussed. With below-average rainfall in the sowing year a good establishment was obtained and a single cut to a stubble height of 75 mm in August gave a dry matter yield of 3 t ha-1. In the first harvest year, summer rainfall was again below average and a total dry matter yield of 13·8 t ha-1 resulted from three cuts to 75 mm above ground level. However, the total yield was reduced to 10·11 ha-1 in the second year when the rainfall was considerably above average. Attempts to increase the feeding value of the lucerne herbage by increasing cutting frequency and by increasing cutting height showed little effect over the standard system of three cuts to a stubble height of 75 mm. The effects of applying potassium fertilizer at rates supplying 100,200 or 300 kg K ha-1 either as a single spring dressing or in equally divided dressings were not significant in either of the two years

Notes: A 1-year grazing experiment with dairy cows is described in which the milk yield and herbage intake from a sward of S23 perennial ryegrass alone receiving fertilizer N at an annual rate of 360 kg ha−1 were compared with those from a ryegrass-white clover var. Blanca sward given a total N application of 180 kg ha−1. Both treatments gave virtually the same total milk yield of about 12500 kg ha−1 over a 20-week grazing season.

Notes: We describe a new surface-emitting semiconductor structure, its fabrication, and its performance. Phase-locked emission takes place from a region much larger than the wavelength in two dimensions; therefore we term this device a two-dimensional coherent array. The key feature of our device is that the radiation is coupled directly from the active region using a nonresonant grating coupler, i.e., the grating is of noninteger order.

Notes: Abstract Shifts in †13C of the graminaceous C3 halophyte Puccinellia nuttalliana (Schultes) Hitch. can be induced by salinization. To investigate this phenomenon, three approaches were taken: assay of carboxylases, CO2-enrichment studies, and gas exchange analysis. Although ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase activity decreased with salinity, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity did not increase and its levels were not atypical of C3 plants. When plants were grown at four NaCl concentrations under atmospheres of 310 and 1300 cm3 m−3 CO2, the CO2-enrichment enhanced the effects of salinity on †13C. This is consistent with a biophysical explanation for salt-induced shifts in †13C, whereby there is a steepening of the CO2 diffusion gradient into the leaf. Gas exchange analysis indicated that intercellular CO2 concentrations were depressed in the leaves of salt-affected plants. This resulted from a greatly decreased stomatal conductance coupled with only small effects on intrinsic photosynthetic capacity. Water-use efficiency was enhanced.

Notes: Background Asthma is accepted as a disease characterized by airway inflammation, with evidence that airway structural changes, or ‘remodelling’ occurs. There are few studies relating airway physiology, inflammation and remodelling, however. We have carried out a study of inter-relationships between airway inflammation, airway remodelling, reticular basement membrane (RBM) thickening, and bronchial hyper-reactivity (BHR), before and after high-dose inhaled corticosteroid (fluticasone propionate 750 μg b.d.), in a group of relatively mild but symptomatic, steroid naïve asthma patients. Methods Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel group study of inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) in 35 asthmatics, with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and airway endobronchial biopsy (EBB) for inflammatory cell profiles and EBB for airway remodelling carried out at baseline, 3 and 12 months. Results At baseline RBM thickening was related to BAL mast cells and EBB eosinophil counts. In turn baseline log EBB EG2 eosinophil count, log%BAL epithelial cells and log RBM thickness explained 55% of the variability in BHR.Conclusion We provide new information that airway inflammation, remodelling, and BHR in asthma are inter-related and improved by ICS therapy. Our data potentially support the need for early and long-term intervention with ICS even in relatively mild asthmatics, and the need to further assess the potential merit of longitudinal BHR testing in management of some patients, as this may reflect both airway inflammation and remodelling.

Notes: A total of 3226 walleye were removed from Henderson Lake, Ontario over 3 years (1980–2), causing the stock to collapse. This removal tested the applicability of ‘pulse’ fishing as a management alternative, and also provided an opportunity to determine which population characteristics might be monitored to serve as predictors of stock collapse in this species.Following initial exploitation, increased length at age occurred only within younger age-lasses. To use this response as a predictor, one must first obtain pre-exploitation length-at-age data through using the proper gear to sample small fish. Abrosov's mean age to mean age at maturity index may also forewarn of stress (1.2 critical t value for Henderson Lake), but poor recruitment usually invalidates this index, since the lower angling vulnerability of large fish biases mean age calculations. While annual production estimates were a good indicator of the collapse, their determination required much effort. Petersen population estimates produced much more realistic estimates of population size than Schumacher–Eschmeyer estimates, but both estimates not only require much effort but also are influenced by changes in recruitment.Poor predictors of the walleye collapse included: catch-per-unit-effort data, which, while giving some idea of fish density, were not good indices of exploitation stress; condition factors, which were not correlated to fish abundance; fecundity increases, which suffered far too much of a retarded response in Henderson Lake to serve as a predictor of stock collapse. The inability to determine accurately sex ratios of measure recruitment made these parameters unless. At least over the short term, neither northern pike nor white sucker populations have increased following the walleye collapse. As yet, walleye have not returned to their former abundance, so the operational usefulness of ‘pulse’ fishing remains an unknown.

Notes: Discriminant function analyses of infection parameters of parasitic helminths revealed that abundances of seven helminth species contributed significantly to the delineation of four host populations of winter flounder Pleuronectes americanus from the central and south-west Scotian Shelf and the north-east Gulf of Maine (NAFO subdivision 4WX-5Z). These were adult digeneans, Derogenes varicus, Genolinea laticauda, Steganoderma formosum and Steringophorus furciger, metacercariae of the digenean, Stephanostomum baccatum, and larval nematodes, Anisakis simplex and Hysterothylacium aduncum. The correct classification rate was 84% overall, with Georges Bank (5Z) and Sable Island Bank (4W) winter flounder being the most accurately classified samples at 98 and 88%, respectively. Winter flounder from south-west Nova Scotia (4X), an inshore sample from St Marys Bay and offshore fish from Browns Bank, had the lowest rates of correct classification (76 and 71%, respectively) due, primarily, to cross-misclassification between the two samples. Winter pairwise comparisons of four microsatellite markers identified significant genetic differences between all populations sampled with the Georges Bank population being the most genetically distinct overall, and St Marys Bay and Browns Bank fish being the least dissimilar.

Notes: To explore the population structure of Atlantic halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus, 160 fish from four locations in the north-west Atlantic (Bay of Fundy, Scotian Shelf, Gulf of St Lawrence and Iceland) were examined for evidence of population structure using 18 microsatellite markers. Pair-wise FST and a model-based cluster analysis revealed no significant differentiation between samples, although uncertainties surrounding Atlantic halibut reproductive behaviour made it difficult to ascertain that only a single breeding population had been sampled at each location
