Notes: Thirty-one specimens of tissue were obtained from 15 renal allografts 3–96 months after transplantation and studied by light, electron and in some cases also by immunofluorescence microscopy. All patients had a degree of renal insufficiency and almost all had proteinuria and moderate hypertension; nephrotic syndrome was present in one and hematuria in two. On histological examination one patient showed cellular proliferation suggestive of glomerulonephritis (recurrent or de novo) and another patient had numerous crescents. The most frequent glomerular lesion was widening of the lamina rara interna with subendothelial accumulation of finely granular material, formation of new subendothelial basement membrane and deposition of microfibrils and fine filaments. The mesangial changes were mainly those of mesangiolysis and mesangial sclerosis with deposition of mesangial matrix and microfibrils, but little cellular proliferation. Fragmented red blood cells were seen in nearly half of the patients. In another seven patients the lesion resembled focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. This combination of changes termed transplant glomerulopathy leads to diffuse glomerular sclerosis. Arterial intimal thickening and occasionally also thrombosis produced ischaemic changes in the kidney and in the glomeruli and contributed significantly to the process of transplant rejection.

Notes: Summary Two cases of the anterior inferior cerebellar arteries originating from the cavernous and precavernous segments of the internal carotid artery are reported. In one case the course of the anomalous artery was confirmed by autopsy. This anomalous artery is considered to be a variant of persistent primitive trigeminal artery. The clinical significance is discussed briefly.

Notes: Summary Pregnant ICR/JCL mice were treated with 6 mg of cyproterone acetate (CA) from days 14 to 20 of pregnancy to feminize male offspring. Feminized males delivered on day 20 of pregnancy by cesarean section were castrated the same day, injected with estradiol-17β(E2) or sesame oil from the day of delivery (=day 1) to day 10 and sacrificed on day 60. In oil-injected feminized males, the vaginal epithelium was atrophic and did not show cornification. In feminized males given 20 μg E2 neonatally, the vaginal epithelium exhibited well-differentiated stratified squamous organization, but was not cornified in seven out of the nine mice of this group. In the mice treated with 50 μg E2, persistent cornification was recognized most frequently in the posterior two-thirds of the vaginal epithelium which is considered to originate from the which may contain the epithelial cells of müllerian duct was low. These results provide supporting evidence for the possible participation of epithelial cells which come from the urogenital sinus in the development of estrogen-independent persistent vaginal cornification in neonatally estrogenized mice.

Notes: Summary The developmental changes in the seminal colliculus of male mice were studied by light and scanning electron microscopy. The epithelium of the mouse seminal colliculus is transformed to the mature epithelium between 20 and 25 days of age, while the transformation of the remaining urethral wall occurred from 5 to 10 days of age. During the process of this epithelial transformation at the seminal colliculus unusual structures, including prominent epithelial proliferations and protrusions, were observed in the area adjacent to the ejaculatory duct openings and the ventral area of the upper medial region of the seminal colliculus in 15-day-old mice. In these unusual structures, three types of cells were recognized by their surface characteristics: cells which had distinct borders and ruffled cell surfaces with microridges; cells which had distinct borders and flat or slightly ruffled cell surfaces with many short microvilli, and small cells which had rounded cell surfaces with many long microvilli. In the remaining area of the seminal colliculus, two types of cells were distinguished: those which had flat or slightly rounded cell surfaces with many short microvilli and those cells with many long microvilli similar to the ones in the previously described area. In 25-day-old mice, the unusual protruding structures were not observed, but some cells with ruffled surfaces were still seen.

Notes: Abstract Infrared absorption enhancement of m- and p-nitrobenzoic acid deposited on thin-evaporated silver films has been investigated using the Kretschmann's ATR coupling method. The absorption spectra provide direct evidence that enhancement is prominent only for vibrations of the first monolayer adsorbed on the Ag surface. It is shown that all of the vibrational modes observed obey the normal dipole selection rule. Moreover, it was found that there exist two types of absorption enhancement; the first is enhanced (∼300) by both p- and s-polarized radiation, and the second is enhanced (∼60) by p-polarized radiation alone. The Ag film thickness optimum is about 50 Å in the former case and about 200 Å in the latter. The enhancement insensitive to the polarization state of radiation can well be explained by the excitation of the transverse collective electron resonance of the Ag islands, whereas that obtained by p-polarized radiation may be due to the excitation of delocalized surface plasmons modified by surface roughness. The image-dipole effect may also be significant in the mechanisms.

Notes: Summary The topographic distribution pattern and morphological features of Lafora-like bodies in the spinal cord of the dog, cat, fox, and baboon were examined by light and electron microscopy. The caudal lumbar and the coccygeal parts of the spinal cords were the predilection sites for the bodies in all animals and were very prominent in the ventral columns and intermediate substance. The bodies mainly composed of branching filaments were preferentially located in neuronal processes and rarely in astrocytes. The histochemical characteristics of the bodies were identical in all animals and consisted mainly of polyglucosan.

Notes: Summary The gracile nucleus and conus medullaris, the sites of predilection for spheroids and Lafora-like bodies, were examined light and electron microscopically in 91 dogs ranging from 1 month to 19 years of age. The number of both structures showed a tendency to increase with age. Spheroids have already been found in younger dogs before the appearance of Lafora-like bodies. In the aged dog, intra-spheroidal Lafora-like bodies were occasionally observed. Correlative studies may yield clues on the pathogenesis of aging phenomena in the CNS.
