Notes: Clinical and immunological studies were made in forty-two patients diagnosed as suffering from hypersensitivity pneumonitis at Osaka Prefectural Habikino Hospital between 1973 and 1977. All the sera from forty-one patients tested had high litres of antibody against Cryptococcus neoformans in indirect fluorescent antibody tests, and twelve also had precipitins against Cryptococcus neoformans polysaccharide. Only about 10% of control sera from patients with otherlung diseases had low titresof antibody against Cryptococcus neoformans. Antibody against Cryptococcus neoformans was also found frequently in the sera of asymptomatic members of the families of the patients. A possible relationship of Cryptococcus neoformans to hypersensitivity pneumonitis is suggested.

Notes: Sixty-six patients, diagnosed as Japanese summer-type hypersensitivity pneumonitis at Osaka Prefectural Habikino hospital between 1973 and 1980, were studied. The diagnosis was based on the clinical features and summer-seasonal nature of the disease. The presence of an aetiological agent within patients' home environment was suggested by the recurrence of acute symptoms of high fever, cough and dyspnoea 5–8 hr after coming home from hospital, and by spontaneous improvement on leaving home. Immunological studies revealed the presence of anti-Cryptococcus antibody in sixty-four of sixty-five patients' sera, by indirect immunofluorescence against Cryptococcus neoformans, Precipitating antibody against culture supernatant protein-antigen of Cr. neoformans was detected in more than 80% of sera obtained from patients during the active stage of the disease. The positive result on inhalation provocation-challenge, using culture supernatant protein-antigen, suggested that Cr. neoformans or antigenically related Cryptococcus species may cause Japanese summer-type hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

Notes: Background  Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is available for the treatment of various skin tumours and other skin diseases. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation induces DNA damage, cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD) (6-4) photoproducts (6-4PP) and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), all of which are carcinogenic for the skin. However, effects of PDT on DNA damage and carcinogenesis are unclear. Objectives  To compare the production of photoproducts and the induction of skin tumours in mouse epidermis treated with UVB or PDT.Methods  We performed UVB irradiation or ATX-S10(Na)–PDT on the skin of 20 hairless mice, in each case, and analysed DNA damage and tumour induction. Results  After a single irradiation of UVB on mouse skin, CPD, 6-4PP and 8-OHdG were detected in the nuclei of keratinocytes. In contrast, PDT-treated mouse keratinocytes showed induction of 8-OHdG, but not of CPD or 6-4PP. Skin tumours induced by UVB irradiation (3 kJ m−2 three times weekly) were observed following 15 weeks of irradiation (mean ± SEM tumour incidence 3·2 ± 1·8%; tumour number 3·2 ± 1·6 per mouse) and increased depending on irradiation times and doses. Following 30 weeks of UVB irradiation (3 kJ m−2 three times weekly), mean ± SEM tumour incidence and tumour number were 28·7 ± 4·8% and 14·2 ± 2·8% per mouse, respectively. Although skin tumours were also detected in PDT-treated mouse skin following 80 weeks of treatment (mean ± SEM tumour incidence 9·1 ± 1·8%; tumour number 12·2 ± 2·3 per mouse), the number of tumours was not statistically different from untreated mouse skin (mean ± SEM tumour incidence 4·1 ± 3·8%; tumour number 5·2 ± 3·3 per mouse). Conclusions  PDT induced 8-OHDG but not CPD or 6-4PP, and was shown to be a relatively safe modality following multiple applications to mouse skin.

Notes: Application of the matrix intensity equation of X-ray diffraction is discussed for the second problem of extrinsic faults in face-centred cubic crystals, discussed by Howard [Acta Cryst. (1977), A33, 29-32]. The second problem is generalized to the case that the probability with which inserted layers follow layers of the original crystal differs from that with which inserted layers follow previously inserted layers. The Q matrix for the case is obtained and the results of intensity calculation are shown.

Notes: The effects of helium and aging treatment on radiation damage behavior in low activation Fe-Cr-Mn ( W, V) alloy were investigated by electron and helium ion dual-beam irradiation in a high voltage electron microscope. Specimens were aged at 673 K, 823 K and 923 K for 1000, 3000 and 10000 hours. Electron and He ion dual-beam irradiations were performed at 627 K to 10 dpa. M23C6 type carbides were precipitated in the aged specimens, and the amount of the precipitates was increased with increasing aging temperature and aging time. He bubbles were formed during dual-beam irradiation in all of the specimens. The cavity swelling under dual-beam irradiations was increased with increasing the aging temperature and aging time. It was suggested that cavity swelling is closely related to the concentration of solutes such as Cr and C in the matrix, namely cavity growth rate becomes higher with decreasing of the solutes in solution

Notes: Summary Morphological alterations of oligodendroglia were investigated in the spinal cord of the twitcher mouse, an authentic murine model of human globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD) from day 5 to day 45 postnatal (p.n.). Typical inclusions were seen in the perikarya as well as the processes of oligodendroglia after day 10 with increasing frequency. The majority of the inclusions was non-crystalloid but rather needle-like or slender tubular in appearance. Ultrastructural features of cellular degeneration became first noticeable on days 25–30 in the oligodendroglial cytoplasm. These consisted of an increased number of microtubules and/or smooth cisterns, dispersed ribosomes, alteration of endoplasmic reticulum forming stacked lamellae or whorles, vesiculation or vacuolation of cytoplasm. The number of degenerating oligodendroglia increased in the older twitcher mice, so did the degenerating myelin sheath. However, even on day 45, when globoid cells became conspicuous in subpial and perivascular regions, many oligodendroglia and myelin sheaths were still well preserved. These observations suggested that oligodendrogial degeneration resulted in the degeneration of myelin sheaths but globoid cells appeared even before morphological evidence of myelin degeneration, presumably in response to the biochemical alterations resulted from the deficiency of galactosylceramidase.
