Notes: Changes in leptin and ghrelin levels occur with alterations in adiposity, but signalling may be affected by levels of the relevant receptors. We measured expression of the leptin receptor (Ob-Rb) and the ghrelin/growth hormone releasing peptide receptor (GHS-R) in the arcuate nucleus of sheep held at either high or low levels of adiposity. Plasma growth hormone (GH) levels were lower in Fat animals and higher in Lean animals. Plasma insulin and leptin levels were higher in Fat animals and lower in Lean animals. Frozen hypothalamic sections of arcuate nucleus were extracted and mRNA levels measured for mRNA for Ob-Rb and GHS-R. Gene expression for both Ob-Rb and GHS-R was higher in Lean animals than in Fat animals, with no difference in expression between Fat and Normal animals. A second group of animals (n = 4 per group) was used for double-labelling immunohistochemistry to determine whether the increase in Ob-Rb gene expression was translated into Ob-Rb protein and to ascertain whether this effect is localised to the cells of the arcuate nucleus that produce either neuropeptide Y (NPY) and/or pro-opiomelanocortin-derived peptides. Lean animals displayed a 255% increase in immunoreactive NPY cells (P 〈 0.005), a 167% increase in cells with Ob-Rb (P 〈 0.037) protein and a 344% increase in cells that were staining for both NPY and Ob-Rb (P 〈 0.02). There was no difference between the Normal and Lean animals in the number of cells that were detected with an adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) antibody or the number of ACTH-immunoreactive cells that also stained for Ob-Rb. Finally, we measured plasma ghrelin levels in Normal, Fat and Lean ewes (n = 4/group); levels were higher (P 〈 0.05) in Fat animals than in Lean animals. We conclude that lowering body weight leads to increased expression of Ob-Rb, ghrelin/GHS-R expression and proportion of NPY cells that express Ob-Rb in the arcuate nucleus. This may be an adaptive mechanism to increase responsivity to both leptin and ghrelin.

Notes: Aims : Most lymphomas arising in the nasal cavity are thought to be of natural killer (NK) cell origin. However, some reports indicate that T- and B-cell lymphomas may also primarily arise in the nasal cavity. We therefore studied lymphomas arising in the nasal cavity both histologically and immunohistochemically. Methods and results : Of the 32 cases investigated, 20 cases were also available as fresh frozen specimens. We diagnosed 31 cases as extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma and one as plasmacytoma. The neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for CD3 (polyclonal) 31/31, LMP-1 12/31, CD20 (L26) 0/31, granzyme B 30/31, TIA-1 30/30, CD56 (123C3) 29/31, CD4 0/31 and CD8 3/31. In situ hybridization for Epstein–Barr virus-encoded small RNA-1 (EBER-1) was detected in 31/31. In frozen tissue sections, neoplastic cells mostly showed CD3 (Leu4)–, CD4 (Leu3a)–, CD5 (Leu1)–, CD8 (Leu2)–, CD16 (Leu11)–, CD56 (Leu19)+, βF1–, TCRδ1–, perforin+, CD94+ phenotypes. These immunohistochemical findings indicate their NK cell origin. In three cases, neoplastic cells were positive for CD8. In one of these cases, neoplastic cells were positive for CD8β and Vα24, suggesting their NKT-cell origin. Conclusions : Our present study indicates that primary lymphomas arising in the nasal cavity are mostly of NK cell derivation. Our present study also suggests that a small number of cases are derived from NKT-cells.

Notes: Summary Insertion of iron nail into the vitreous cavity provoked the formation of lipoperoxide in the retina. In accord with the increase in lipoperoxide in the retina, ERG began to decrease. In vitro experiment using isolated retina, lipoperoxide was found to be increased in the presence of ferric or ferrous ions, while it was inhibited by adding antioxidants or ethylenediamine tetraacetate. From these results, direct cause of retinal degeneration in siderosis could be ascribed to the formation of lipoperoxide by iron-ions liberated from the piece of iron, resulting into the degeneration of the visual cell layers of the retina.

Notes: MgAl2O4 layer with several decade nano-meter in thickness was coated uniformly onAl18B4O33 whisker by vapor-deposition of pure magnesium in vacuum and then heat-treated inatmosphere in order to prevent to the direct reaction between Al18B4O33 whisker and molten ZK60(Mg-(4.8-6.2)%Zn-(0.45-0.8)%Zr) alloy in preparing the composites. By the coating, the compositehave no interfacial reaction in whisker and matrix. As the consumption of Zn at the interface wasnot observed during preparation of the composites, the composites have good aging behavior, butshowed the shortening of the time to reach the peak hardness. As the cooling speed of the compositeafter solution treatment is slow because of low thermal conductivity of the composites, someprecipitation (MgZn2) was observed in the composites. Furthermore, the precipitation grew aroundthe interface between whisker and matrix preferentially because of thermal stress around theinterface. It seems these phenomena affect to the shortening of the time to reach the peak hardness

Notes: Summary When rabbit was exposed to high concentration of oxygen, lipoperoxide in the retina was increased at 12 h of the exposure, after which period amplitude of electro-retinogram decreased. The degeneration was observed in the visual cell layer of the retina of the exposed animal. The exposure increased lipoperoxide in isolated retina. These data show the intervention of lipoperoxide in retinal degeneration induced by exposure to high concentration of oxygen.

Notes: Abstract Polycarbosilane as the precursor of continuous SiC fibre was synthesized by thermal decomposition of polydimethylsilane. The structure of the polycarbosilane is concluded to be similar to that of polysilapropylene by the measurements of i.r. spectra, NMR spectra and chemical analyses. Its formation mechanisms are initially the formation of carbosilane by thermal decomposition of polydimethylsilane and then the increase in molecular weight by dehydrogenation-condensation of the carbosilane. Molecular structure and molecular weight distribution of the polycarbosilane depend on the reaction temperature.
