Notes: The variation in the optical properties of metal-semiconductor composites (MSC) thin films due to particle-size distribution, metal volume fraction, film thickness, semiconductor dielectric constant, and microstructure are treated in a unified manner. These parameters are treated within the dynamic effective medium approximation which has been shown to accurately describe the optical properties of experimentally prepared MSC. The results of this treatment are successfully applied to Ag–Si composite systems. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It is shown that care must be exercised in using digital equipment when making Hall measurements in a van der Pauw setup employing the ASTM standard method. This arises because of quantization error when working near the sensitivity limit of the equipment. For materials with small Hall mobilities (〈100 cm2/V s) this can lead to an incorrect specification of the carrier type and inconsistent mobility behavior. A simple averaging and sampling procedure is suggested to suppress this type of behavior and is found to be sufficient to obtain reliable and repeatable Hall voltages and coefficients.

Notes: Following insect sting anaphylaxis, twenty-five patients of over 500 evaluated, did not have detectable serum venom-specific IgE. Twenty-two were evaluated within 1 year of the reaction, fifteen within 6 months. Anaphylaxis occurred in six patients after their first sting exposure. The clinical features of the sting reaction were typical of the reaction occurring in insect-allergic patients with serum venom-specific IgE. Eleven of the twenty-five patients had negative venom skin tests. These observations suggest that a non-IgE mechanism may be responsible for a minority of insect sting reactions.

Notes: Training in the hospitality industry has received relatively little attention and what has been published has focused primarily upon training in hotels and restaurants. This paper presents an exploratory study of training of line-level food and beverage employees in private clubs in the USA. Through a series of focus groups, club managers' approaches to training are explored concentrating upon training subjects, methods used and challenges associated with the training process.

Notes: Despite the overall impact the AIDS epidemic has had on US business and society, few articles have been published in academic journals on hospitality management. Presents a brief review of the literature and summarizes the current state of the US hospitality industry and its response to the AIDS challenge. Suggests that a combination of ongoing employee education programmes, in conjunction with a comprehensive policy statement, may be the most effective means of preparing an organization to deal with employees with AIDS. Makes recommendations for the implementation of these programmes appropriate to the hospitality environment.

Notes: The private club industry is undergoing major change as it forges new links with academia in the areas of research, teaching and management development. This bodes well for hospitality management programmes. Indeed, the primary mission of most hospitality programmes in North America includes the dissemination of information in ways that will translate into tangible benefits for the greater hospitality industry. This article examines the context within which changes are taking place in the relationship between private clubs and hospitality education in North America, discusses the current research agenda on club management and reports the results of a survey of club managers about the nature and importance of industry/education linkages. It concludes by proposing a framework for continued collaboration that would strengthen both academic and industry partners while emphasizing a renewed and refocused research agenda.

Notes: : In the past five years, USDA and EPA programs became major players in implementing watershed programs. The 1996 Farm Bill for the first time required that USDA assistance for farmers address priority environmental needs on a site-specific, or watershed, basis. USDA involves farmers and other players in locally run watershed programs and focuses cost share and incentive payments on nutrient planning, riparian protection, and other practices prioritized to most efficiently achieve watershed goals. As a result, USDA has become a funding source for environmental initiatives targeted to watersheds, as well as a technical resource that attempts to support more efficient use of federal and state environmental expenditures. Analysis identifies institutional and technical barriers to targeting the very limited, new assistance and suggests how those barriers are being addressed by some innovative programs. Since Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) and other state run programs face many of the same challenges of ranking watersheds, setting goals, and finding cost effective remedies, this paper identifies a very close fit between the new federal programs and other watershed programs.
