Notes: Abstract: The distribution of 5′-nucleotidase activity, dopaminergic [3H]spiperone binding sites, and [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB) binding sites in different subcellular fractions of bovine caudate nucleus has been studied. Each activity was enriched in a microsomal (P3) preparation from that tissue. The microsomal preparation was further fractionated by different techniques. First, the P3 fraction, or a sonicated P3 fraction, was fractionated on a discontinuous sucrose density gradient. Second, the P3 fraction, or a digitonin pretreated P3 fraction, was fractionated on a continuous sucrose density gradient. The results obtained demonstrate that 5′-nucleotidase activity does not cofractionate with radioligand binding activity, although no difference between the distributions of [3H]spiperone binding and [3H]QNB binding were seen. It is concluded that the two radioligand binding activities are located on nonglial membranes.

Notes: Abstract— [3H]Spiperone binding has been used to study neurotransmitter receptors in bovine caudate nucleus in displacement and saturation binding experiments. Displacement curves for several antagonists are biphasic and can be analysed into contributions from dopaminergic and serotonergic sites. Antagonist binding at each class of sites follows the simple mass action equations for binding at a homogeneous set of sites (slope factors close to unity). Agonist displacement curves also indicate complex behaviour, but agonist binding to the dopaminergic sites alone exhibits heterogeneous properties (slope factors less than unity). Saturation binding experiments have been conducted on each class of site, defining dopaminergic binding of [3H]spiperone as that binding displaced by 0.1 mm-dopamine and serotonergic binding as that displaced by 0.3 μm-mianserin. In each case, a single class of binding sites was detected: the binding parameters derived in this way have been used to calculate the proportions of the two classes of binding site observed in displacement experiments. Good agreement was obtained between calculated and observed values.

Notes: This paper reports on a 4 × 4 factorial design experiment conducted to examine the combined effects of temperature and salinity on embryonic development and growth and survival of black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera (L.) larvae. The temperatures used were 20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C and 35 °C, and the salinities were 25°/oo, 30°/oo, 35°/oo and 40°/oo. Response surface contour diagrams were generated from the survival and growth data to estimate optimal conditions. Normal development of embryos occurred only from 25 °C to 30 °C. The optimal conditions for maximum survival and growth were 26–29 °C and 28–32°/oo. Temperatures of 35 °C or greater were lethal for larvae and, at all temperatures tested, larval growth and survival were lowest at a salinity of 40°/oo.

Notes: Pasteurized whole milk was concentrated by reverse osmosis (RO) on a pilot plant scale. The retentate was then used to produce cheddar cheese following the traditional method but using 50% less starter and 60% less rennet. The biochemical composition of the RO cheese was close to that of ordinary cheddar. The resulting non uniformity of the fresh curd as well as the granular texture of the cheese were probably due to the high lactose content of the retentate. Contamination of the milk from bacteria already present in the reverse osmosis system caused the high coliform level of the cheese.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Recently, Zenner et al. implanted the first totally implantable electronic hearing devices in patients with SNHL (HNO 46 [1998] 844–852). In the present report, technical and audiological features of the implant TICA are published. The development of the piezoelectric transducer and the microphone for implantation in the posterior wall of the auditory canal as components for the present fully implantable hearing system has already been described (HNO 45, 1997, 792–880). Here we report about our experience with the electronic main module that completes the TICA LZ 3001 system. This module is suited for implantation in the mastoid bone and contains the signal-processing electronics and an integrated battery that can be recharged transcutaneously with a portable charger. The recharging time is around 2 h for an implant operating time of 50h. The microphone and transducer connectors allow for easy replacement of the main module when the battery lifetime is reached. This lifetime is around 3–5 years. A small wireless remote control allows volume adjustment, contains an on/off switch, and permits selection of four different individual hearing programs. The basic audiological features are provided by a flexible, digitally programmable 3-channel-AGC-system with a peak clipping function. The total bandwidth is around 10 kHz. To our knowledge this is the first fully implantable hearing system that has been in implanted in humans.

Notes: Summary β-Oxo-1-anthracenepropionate (3) reacts step by step with phenylisothiocyanate and α-CH-acidic halo compounds to keten-S,N-acetals4, followed by cyclocondensation to give the 4-(1-anthracenyl)-thiophene-3-carboxylates5. In contrast, the reaction of β-oxo-9-anthracenepropionate (6) with isothiocyanates and α-CH-acidic halo compounds yields 5-acyl-2-amino-3-(9-anthracenoyl)-4-hydroxy-thiophenes8. This is caused by the sterical hindrance of the keto group of the anthracene in position 9; thus, the cyclocondensation proceedsvia reaction of the ester group of the β-oxo-propionate. In the same way, 9-acetylanthracene reacts with phenylisothiocyanate and α-CH-acidic compounds to keten-S,N-acetals10 and, in an additional step, to 2-anilino-3-(9-anthracenoyl)-thiophenes11 and 2-(9-anthracenoyl)-methylene-3,4-diphenyl-2,3-dihydro-(1,3)-thiazole12, respectively. The structure of all new compounds was determinated by 2D NOESY NMR spectroscopy.
