Notes: We have found that NdBa2Cu3Ox (NBCO) thin films, fabricated by the laser ablation process, have highly stable and smooth surfaces. Clear spiral patterns with 4–5 terraces are observed all over the film area with an atomic force microscope (AFM) operating in air. We have also obtained atomically resolved image of the spiral terraces using AFM, and also using ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope. This study suggests that NBCO film is a good candidate for device applications. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The temperature dependence of the surface peaks of the (001) SrTiO3 substrate surfaces was studied for the sample temperature up to 750 °C by channeling. The temperature dependence of the Sr surface peaks was found to be due to the thermal vibration of the Sr atoms. However, an anomalous temperature dependence of the Ti surface peak was observed which may be due to the displacement of Ti surface atoms. The Ti surface peaks are maximum at 400 °C. For the reduced SrTiO3−δ, surface reconstruction was observed on the Sr surface sublattice but the anomalous temperature dependence of the Ti surface peak disappeared. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have performed ion channeling characterizations on the (001) and (100) surfaces of YBa2Cu3O7−x single crystals, using 950 keV He+ ions at temperatures ranging from 20 to 780 °C. In oxygen pressures below 5×10−5 Torr, we directly observed the surface changes as the sample temperature was increased, and found that the compositional and structural changes occurred from around 400 °C. At higher oxygen pressures, we heated the crystals and performed channeling analysis before and after the heating. We found that the YBa2Cu3O7−x crystal surfaces were stable at temperatures up to 780 °C in the oxygen pressure range of 1 mTorr–1 Torr. Beyond this range, the surfaces deteriorated at high temperatures. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Development of the negative-ion sources has been conducted to realize a high power neutral beam injector for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). A high negative-ion current density of 31 mA/cm2 (H−) at a very low pressure of 0.1 Pa has been produced in a cesium seeded multicusp plasma generator which has the same concept of the ITER source. For a vacuum insulated accelerator, a voltage holding experiment of long distance vacuum gaps up to ∼1.8 m has been performed. It was clarified that the transition region of product pressure distance (pd) from the vacuum breakdown to the gas discharge is about 0.2 Pa m which is high enough from the operating region of the ITER source. A prototype vacuum insulated accelerator was fabricated based on the experiment and tested. A high-energy H− beam acceleration up to 970 keV, 37 mA, and 1 s has been successfully demonstrated. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In cesium-seeded hydrogen negative-ion sources, surface production on the plasma grid plays an important role in negative ion production. To enhance the surface, it is required to use material that would give a lower work function when Cs is absorbed on the surface. In a semicylindrical and cesium-seeded volume negative-ion source, eight materials (W, Cu, Mo, V, Cr, Ni, Ag, and Au) were tested as candidates for the plasma grid material. To avoid deposition of the cathode material on these materials, a filament-free plasma source was used, to fire the microwave (2.45 GHz) discharge in the Kamaboko source. The material surface was examined by measuring the photoelectron current by laser irradiation. It was observed that the discharge enhanced the photoelectron current when the material was biased negatively to the plasma potential during discharge. In the present experiment, Ni, Au, and Ag surfaces with a Cs layer showed a higher photoelectron current than the others. This was 1.5 times larger than that of Cu and W used as a plasma grid and filament in conventional high current negative ion sources. It is expected that higher negative-ion production efficiency would be obtained by using Ni, Ag, and Au as the plasma grid material, if deposition of filament materials is avoided on the surface. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary.  Phylogenetic analysis was carried out for genes encoding hemagglutinin (HA) (24 new and 25 previously reported sequences) and nonstructural proteins (NS) (22 new and 14 previously reported sequences) of influenza B virus isolates obtained from 1940 to 1999. Two antigenically and genetically distinct HA lineages are presently known to exist. Divergence into these two lineages was estimated to have occurred around 1969. Phylogenetic analysis of NS genes revealed that their phylogenetic relationships were not linked to the two HA lineages but suggested that reassortment of viral genes between the viruses of two HA lineages had occurred. In addition two distinct NS lineages which were not linked to the two HA lineages were observed. Viruses isolated after 1997 formed their own lineage in combination with B/Houston/84 while other virus isolates obtained from 1973 to 1995 comprised the other NS lineage.

Notes: Summary. The complete nucleotide sequence of a sweet potato feathery mottle virus severe strain (SPFMV-S) genomic RNA was determined from overlapping cDNA clones and by directly sequencing viral RNA. The viral RNA genome is 10 820 nucleotides long, excluding the poly(A) tail and contains one open reading frame (ORF) starting at nucleotide 118 and ending at 10 599, potentially encoding a polyprotein of 3 493 amino acids (Mr 393 800). The ORF was followed by a 3 untranslated region of 221 nucleotides. The deduced polyprotein includes P1 (74K), HC-Pro (52K), P3 (46K), 6K1, CI (72K), 6K2, NIa-VPg (22K), NIa-Pro (28K), NIb (60K) and coat (35K) proteins, after an analysis of protein cleavage sites analogous to other potyvirus polyproteins. The polyprotein had a high level of amino acid identity with those of other potyviruses, except in the regions of P1 and P3. The P1 of SPFMV-S RNA has 664 amino acid residues, and is the largest and least similar to those of other potyviruses. HC-Pro and CI show high identity with those of other potyviruses. P3 has relatively low identity, however, the length of P3 was within the range of variability among other potyviruses. The 6K1 protein between P3 and C1 is also highly similar to those of other potyviruses. This is the first report on the complete nucleotide sequence of the sweet potato-infecting virus.

Notes: Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a disease which must be controlled over the lifetime of a patient. We investigated the issues of stress and coping for diabetes mellitus which may influence self-management. In addition, we examined the association of these factors with blood glucose control, in order to review self-management instructions for diabetes mellitus. The study included 153 patients with diabetes mellitus. The patients were divided into two subgroups: good-control group, comprising patients with glycohemoglobin (HbA1c) values less than 7.0%; and poor-control group, comprising those with HbA1c values of 7.0% or more. All patients responded to a questionnaire regarding stress tolerance, Jalowiec and Power's coping scale and awareness of diabetes mellitus. Stress tolerance was not significantly different between the good-control and poor-control groups. No significant gender differences in coping score were evident for the good-control group. However, in the poor-control group, the coping score in men was significant higher than that in women. The problem-oriented coping score for men in the poor-control group was significantly higher than that for the good-control group (p 〈 0.01). In a comparison of awareness of diabetes mellitus, the proportion of patients who replied that they were rigidly following diabetes treatment was higher in the poor-control group than the good-control group. Patients with diabetes mellitus may have a knowledge of the disease and a strong will to resolve problems. This is especially true for male patients in that their will appeared to be stronger, but they may not have the resolve to establish appropriate behavior patterns. In the future, methods for evaluating self-management should be included in diabetes education.
