Notes: High-pressure Brillouin scattering measurements have been carried out in orientationally disordered (OD) phases I and I′ of solid HBr, which yielded the first determination of acoustic velocities for all directions, the refractive index, the polarizability, the density, adiabatic elastic constants (C11, C12, and C44), bulk modulus, and the elastic anisotropy as a function of pressure up to 7 GPa and at room temperature. The I→I′ phase transition in solid HBr was confirmed on the discontinuous pressure dependence at P=2.3 GPa for average errors of the least-squares fit by the analysis of in situ Brillouin spectroscopy. These elastic properties of solid HBr are compared with recent results in the OD phase I of solid HCl. We suggest that the form of the potential energy function for intermolecular forces in solid HBr is similar to that in HCl. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: summary The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between maximal mouth opening and size of the skeleton. The subjects were dental students at the Dental School of the Health Sciences University of Hokkaido with no functional disorders of the masticatory system. The stature and maximal mouth opening were recorded in 29 males and 31 females. These subjects agreed to have a lateral cephalogram taken at the closed and maximal mouth opening positions. The correlations between the maximal mouth opening and the body height, mandibular length and mandibular angle were significant. The correlation between the maximal mouth opening and the movement of the condyle was also significant.

Notes: Abstract Wistar Imamichi rat and human respiratory cilia were examined with anti-dynein antibody (AD2), which is specific for sea urchin sperm flagellar dynein. AD2-labelled fresh-frozen normal rat and human cilia stained clearly by immunofluorescence and the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique. On immunoelectron microscopy, AD2 labelled the outer dynein arms of normal human cilia. Paraffin-embedded normal human cilia also stained by immunofluorescence, although not always clearly. Neither the cilia of WIC-Hyd male rats, an animal model of Kartagener's syndrome, nor human cilia from patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) reacted positively by the immunofluorescence or PAP technique. Western blots of normal rat cilia yielded a single band of about 450 kDa. In conclusion, AD2 recognizes the outer arm dynein heavy chains of healthy cilia and may be useful in diagnosing and classifying PCD light microscopically especially when only paraffin-embedded specimens are available. This approach may be of potential use for better defining and classifying PCD.

Notes: Abstract We studied blood MIP-1α and IL-8 in 38 septic patients and 5 healthy volunteers. Both chemokines were undetectable in the healthy volunteers. In sepsis, serum MIP-1α was detected in 45% of the patients and IL-8 in 84%. The levels of MIP-1α, but not of IL-8, correlated with CRP, IL-6 and TNFα levels. Complication, including various organ failures and mortality, showed no correlation with serum MIP-1α levels. In contrast, we found increased levels of serum IL-8 in septic patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation, central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction or renal failure, and the mortality rate was higher in the IL-8-detectable group than in the IL-8 undetectable group (50% vs 0%,p〈0.05). In conclusion, the production of both MIP-1α and IL-8 was increased and initially detectable levels of circulating IL-8 predicted high mortality in sepsis. Objective To determine the significance of the C-C chemokine MIP-1α and the C-X-C chemokine IL-8 in sepsis. Design Prospective study. Setting Clinical investigation, emergency department and general intensive care unit of university hospital. Patients and participants 38 septic patients and 5 healthy volunteers were studied. Sepsis was diagnosed following the criteria formulated by ACCP/SCCM. Interventions 10–20 ml of blood was drawn from each patient at the time of initial diagnosis of sepsis. Measurements and results MIP-1α and IL-8 were determined by sand-wich ELISA. Both chemokines were undetectable in the healthy volunteers. In sepsis, serum MIP-1α was detected in 45% of the patients and IL-8 was detected in 84%. The levels of MIP-1α, but not of IL-8, correlated with CRP, IL-6 and TNFα levels. Complications, including various organ failures and mortality, showed no correlation with serum MIP-1α levels. In contrast, we found increased levels of serum IL-8 in patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) (p〈0.05), central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction (p〈0.05), renal failure (p〈0.01) and the mortality rates were higher in the IL-8 detectable group than in the IL-8 undetectable group (50% vs 0%,p〈0.05). Conclusions The production of MIP-1α and IL-8 was increased in sepsis. Furthermore, an initially detectable level of circulating IL-8, but not MIP-1α, predicted a high mortality in sepsis diagnosed according to the ACCP/SCCM criteria.

Notes: Abstract An isoleucine/valine polymorphism was observed at codon 1464 of the ATP7A gene, which is thought to encode a copper transporting adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase). The frequency of Val1464 was estimated to be 5.7% in the Japanese population. This polymorphism may be useful in genetic studies of Menkes disease.

Notes: Abstract The degrees of nuclear spin polarization of 8,12B, 9C, 12N, 13O, 20,21F, 23Mg, 27Si and 39Ca produced in the high energy 12,13C, 16O, 22Ne, 24Mg, 28Si and 40Ca ions on Be collisions have been measured systematically, for the technical developments of the nuclear moment studies as well as the hyperfine interaction studies by means of β-NMR technique. The fragment momentum dependences were well reproduced by the simple kinematical model. Incident energy dependence and the mass dependence as well as the reaction angle dependences were qualitatively explained by the mixing of the near and far side collisions.

Notes: Abstract The β-NMR spectra of 21F, 23Mg, 27Si and 39Ca which were produced in heavy ion collisions and implanted in various crystals have been observed. The magnetic moments of 21F and 27Si were determined to be |μ(21F)| = 3.9194 ± 0.0012 μN and |μ(27Si)| = 0.8653 ± 0.0003 μN, respectively. The electric quadrupole coupling constants were determined for the first time to be |eqQ(21F in MgF2)/h|= 9.94 ± 0.09 MHz, |eqQ(23Mg in MgF2)/h|= 1.96 ± 0.06 MHz, |eqQ(27Si in Al2O3)/h|= 1.90 ± 0.12 MHz, |eqQ(39Ca in CaCO3)/h|= 0.60 ± 0.04 MHz. From the present eqQ/h, the Q moments were deduced as |Q(21F)|= 110 ± 22 mb, |Q(23Mg)|= 114 ± 3 mb, |Q(27Si)|= 60 ± 13 mb and |Q(39Ca)|= 36± 7 mb. The present data were compared with the theoretical values obtained by the OXBASH shell model code.

Notes: Abstract The Knight shifts K for short-lived β emitters 12N and 27Si implanted in Pt have been measured by means of β-NMR technique. The results were K(12N in Pt)= +(5.8 ± 2.1)× 10-4 and K(27Si in Pt)= +(1.4 ± 0.8)× 10-3. The spin–lattice relaxation time T1 was measured for 12N in Pt. The result was T1(12N in Pt, T=300 K)= 66 ± 8 ms, thus, T1T= 20 ± 2 Ks. The present Knight shifts are in good agreement with the KKR band structure calculation with local lattice relaxation determined theoretically.
