Notes: Abstract: Scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) developed in two patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and they died from respiratory failure. Findings on autopsy revealed congestion and oedema in both lungs and intimal thickening of the small renal arteries in both patients. Immunohistological investigations showed positive staining of anti-human endothelin (ET)-1 in the media of the small renal arteries and ET-B receptor in the medial smooth muscle of the small renal arteries. This observation suggests an important pathophysiological role of ET-1 in the development of SRC in some patients with SSc.

Notes: A study of magnetic and structural properties of (CoxFe100−x)50 (0[less, double equals]x[less, double equals]100) alloy thin films as functions of composition and substrate deposition-temperature Ts is carried out. The intrinsic perpendicular magnetic anisotropy Ku starts to increase with deposition temperature Ts for all the films (0[less, double equals]x[less, double equals]100) at about TS=250–300 °C, and then becomes nearly constant. The maximum values of Ku at room temperature thus obtained are 6×107, 4×107, and 2×107 erg/cc for Fe50Pt50, (Co43Fe57)50Pt50 and Co50Pt50, respectively. Also, the Ku of Fe50Pt50 films increases with the order parameter (S), being closely related with the tetragonality c/a. These results indicate that the evolution of Ku is due to the occurrence of the ordered fct phase. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant in giant magnetoresistive granular Co22Ag78 thin films is found to increase and then decrease with annealing temperature, the maximum being about 5×105 ergs/cc at an annealing temperature of about 600 K. The observation of domain patterns by magnetic force microscopy is consistent with this result. The origin of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is not clear, but suggested to be in an anisotropic Co–Co particle distribution and also due to a surface anisotropy of Co particles. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The solid immersion lens (SIL) near-field magneto-optical (MO) recording technique offers a significant increase in areal density through near-field resolution enhancement. Since the near-field recording scheme requires close proximity of the optical recording head and the magnetic medium, the SIL MO recording setup is usually changed to a "first surface" recording. This requires further optimization of the optical flying head design and a MO medium. In this work marks as small as 150 nm using a SIL with a 680 nm laser source and a TbFeCo magneto-optical medium were recorded. The minimum size of a recorded mark is strongly dependent on the slider flying height, the flying attitude, and lens centering. It should be emphasized that recording power as small as 4 mW is sufficient enough to achieve carrier-to-noise ratio of more than 30 dB. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The intrinsic perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the domain patterns in granular CoxAg1−x films with 17%≤x≤62% are studied. Magnetic stripe domains are found in samples with x≥45% and to change to in-plane domain patterns with increasing annealing temperature. This is consistent with the fact that perpendicular magnetic anisotropy becomes negative with annealing. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the anisotropy behavior and temperature dependent changes of the magnetic anisotropy in Gd/Fe and Gd/(FeCo) multilayers. The spin reorientation effects are very important for the super resolution readout in new methods for high-density magneto-optical recording. Gd/(Fe, Co) multilayered films are a good alternative to the common Gd(Fe, Co) alloy films, because the magnetic anisotropy and also spin reorientation effects can be comfortably adjusted by varying the interface and volume anisotropy components and the composition using experimental parameters such as the periodicity λ=tGd+tTM [tGd,tTM: the sublayer thicknesses of the Gd and transition metal Fe, FeCo (TM)] and the ratio of the sublayer thicknesses tGd/tTM. We have found the mechanisms for spin reorientation, which are explained qualitatively with a new model. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The origin of the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant Ku obtained in Co3Pt alloy thin films is discussed in connection with a superlattice structure. The Ku and the order parameter S are influenced not only by substrate deposition temperature Ts but also deposition rate γ. For Ts=330 °C, Ku and S increase with lowering γ, whereas for Ts=400 °C, the opposite trend is found. A model, in which the origin of Ku results from two mechanisms: Magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Co3Pt disordered phase and interface-induced magnetic anisotropy in Co3Pt ordered phase, can account for the observed dependence of Ku on S. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic and magneto-optical properties of TbFeCo/(Pt, Pd) multilayer films prepared by sputter deposition are discussed in conjunction with their multilayer structure. The effect of polarized Pt on the polar Kerr spectra is significant at ultraviolet photon energies (∼5 eV). Based on the magnetic and magneto-optical properties, it is quite reasonable to surmise that an alloy is formed at the interface in real multilayers. It is the most obvious evidence that the saturation magnetization drastically increases with Pt and Pd thickness up to 12 Å, which indicates that the interfacial regions are essentially due to Fe–Pt and Fe–Pd alloys. This possibility was supported by the simulation of Kerr spectrum for the proposed model based on the layered-structural analyses. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A zirconium sputtering ion source was studied. The argon plasma discharged by electron cyclotron resonance was used as the sputtering working plasma. A cylindrical-type target was used as the sputter target. The zirconium flux is evaluated at the downstream side of the ion source by varying the magnetic field profile of the ion source. And a magnetic profile dependence of the zirconium flux was observed. Zirconium ions and argon ions were detected by a quadrupole mass spectrometer. From the zirconium flux and the ion current, the ionization efficiency was evaluated. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
