    Notes: Electrical properties of Au/ and YBa2Cu3O7−x/SrTi1−yNbyO3 heterojunctions were studied by measuring their capacitance-voltage, current-voltage, and conductance-voltage characteristics. The heterostructures were made by depositing Au or YBa2Cu3O7−x films on SrTi1−yNbyO3 substrates. The results of the capacitance-voltage measurement indicated that there was an interfacial layer having a dielectric constant lower than that of bulk SrTiO3 at the Au/SrTiO3 and YBa2Cu3O7−x/SrTiO3 interfaces. The current-voltage characteristics of the Au/SrTi1−yNbyO3 diodes with substrate Nb concentrations of 0.05 and 0.005 wt. % matched characteristics normally associated Schottky junctions and had a large ideality factor, n, consistent with the low-dielectric-constant interfacial layers. When the carrier concentration of the n-SrTiO3 substrate was 2×1019 cm−3, the Au and YBa2Cu3O7−x junctions showed interfacial-layer tunneling characteristics. The YBa2Cu3O7−x junctions exhibited two peaks in their conductance-voltage relations whose peak structures relies on the superconducting state density in YBa2Cu3O7−x films.

    Notes: Ultrashort laser pulses having 50 fs duration were used to cause planer fracture, i.e., spallation, in pure aluminum foils at intensities of (0.07–1)×1015 W/cm2. A linear relationship was obtained between spall depth and foil thickness, approximately corresponding to the proportions that were obtained in other relations for 300 ps and longer laser pulse irradiation. Spall thicknesses less than 5 μm were obtained in foils thinner than 50 μm, and revealed small-scale spallation at a strain rate exceeding 108 s−1. This ultrashort laser pulse evidently produced a shock wave followed by a steep unloading stress profile. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The laser-prearc railgun, that utilizes the phenomenon of laser-induced arc formation, was constructed and tested with plastic pellet projectiles. We envision our railgun as especially well suited as a solid hydrogen pellet injector for magnetic confinement fusion. The system consisted of a gas gun for preacceleration of a pellet and a railgun for its primary acceleration. A Q-switched ruby laser was used to induce electrical breakdown of propellant helium gas behind a dielectric pellet in the railgun. The present railgun was shown to accelerate a plastic pellet up to a velocity of 2.4 km/s.

    Notes: Rectifying current-voltage characteristics were analyzed for YBa2Cu3O7−x/NdGaO3/n-SrTiO3 diodes made by depositing NdGaO3 barriers and YBa2Cu3O7−x films on Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrates using KrF excimer laser ablation. The diode capacitance measured at 10 kHz indicated that the relative permittivity of the NdGaO3 barrier was 13 at 10 K. Diodes exhibited rectifying current-voltage characteristics where they conducted better for positive voltages on the n-SrTiO3 than for negative voltages. The current density of the diode having a 5-nm-thick NdGaO3 barrier biased around 1 V on the n-type SrTiO3 was 0.2 A/cm2 at 30 K. This current density is at least six orders of magnitude higher than that obtained for diodes with YBa2Cu3O7−x electrodes directly placed on n-SrTiO3 substrates.

    Notes: Thyroid hormones regulate growth hormone (GH) secretion by actions both at the hypothalamus and at the pituitary gland. At the level of the pituitary, thyroid hormones increase GH and GH-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH-R) mRNA expression. To test if thyroid hormones might also regulate the pituitary expression of mRNA for the recently identified GH secretagogue (GHS) receptor, GHS-R, primary pituitary cell cultures from adult male rats were treated with triiodothyronine (T3) and GHS-R mRNA levels were assessed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. T3 increased pituitary GHS-R mRNA levels in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The stimulatory action of T3 on GHS-R mRNA levels was also observed in the presence of the RNA synthesis inhibitor, actinomycin D, indicating that gene transcription is not required. Closer examination of the decay rates of GHS-R mRNA in the presence of actinomycin D revealed T3 extended the half-life of the GHS-R mRNA from 8 h (basal) to15 h, demonstrating that T3 increases GHS-R mRNA levels in vitro by increasing message stability.

    Notes: Glucocorticoids regulate growth hormone (GH) secretion by modulating both hypothalamic and pituitary function. At the level of the pituitary, glucocorticoids increase GH and GH-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH-R) gene expression. To test if glucocorticoids might also regulate the pituitary expression of the recently identified GH secretagogue (GHS) receptor, GHS-R; adult male rats were adrenalectomized or sham operated, and treated with the synthetic glucocorticoid (dexamethasone, 200 µg/day) or vehicle for 8 days. Pituitary GHS-R mRNA levels were assessed by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Adrenalectomy decreased pituitary GHS-R mRNA to 45% of vehicle-treated, sham-operated rats (P 〈 0.05). Administration of dexamethasone increased GHS-R mRNA levels in sham-operated as well as in adrenalectomized rats (199 ± 24% (P 〈 0.05) and 369 ± 48% (P 〈 0.01) of vehicle-treated controls). Addition of dexamethasone to primary rat pituitary cell cultures increased GHS-R mRNA levels in a dose- and time-dependent manner while the transcriptional inhibitor, actinomycin D, completely blocked the stimulatory action of dexamethasone. Taken together, these results suggest glucocorticoids directly increase pituitary GHS-R mRNA levels by stimulating GHS-R gene transcription.

    Notes: Mandibular reaction time was measured in young and elderly volunteers. Each subject was instructed to open the jaw from the closed position and to close the jaw from the open position as quickly as possible after perceiving an auditory or visual signal. The reaction time of the elderly subjects to both signals was significantly slower than that of the young subjects. This was due almost entirely to prolongation of the premotor time component. There was no difference in the maximum velocity of the jaw movement between the two groups of subjects.

    Notes: Experiments are described for T-independent polyclonal activation of B cells in vitro by the immunoglobulin binding substance (IBS) from the granary weevil. The affinity-chromatographically purified IBS was used. IBS is a heat-, alkali- and acid-stable glucopeptide which is characterized by non-specific immunoglobulin binding lo the Fab fragment. The purified IBS consists of three polymer homologues whose molecular weights are 12–14,000, 25–30,000 and more than 150,000 Da. IBS did not stimulate DNA synthesis by murine T cells, macrophages or plasma cells whereas it did stimulate that by mature B cells without any help from T cells or macrophages, IBS also stimulated both in vitro IgG production by spleen cells and in vitro sensitization of spleen cells by sheep red cells (SRBC). IBS was found to stimulate DNA synthesis by B cells mediated by binding to surface immunoglobulins of B cells. IBS is thought to be a useful amplifier for inducing human hybridomas and a valuable tool for examining mature B cells, both diagnostically and experimentally.
