Notes: We report results from a detailed study of photoconduction in C60 films. At low temperatures the photoaction spectra show vibrational coupling to the first electronic transition, indicating that the generation of mobile carriers in the solid involves molecular excitation schemes. The lowest energy transition is found to occur at photon energies of ∼1.8 eV. Below this energy, only weak and field-dependent photoresponse is observed. We attribute this to a tail of localized states related to defects in the film. The edge between localized and extended states approximately coincides with the first vibronic peak. From this peak we find the photoconduction edge of the film to be 1.81±0.01 eV at room temperature in the face-centered-cubic phase and 1.85±0.01 eV in the simple cubic phase below ∼200 K.

Notes: Abstract. A survey of the hydrogen concentration distribution in the various layers of chalcopyrite solar cells is presented. Depth profiles were measured by the nuclear reaction analysis method for the glass substrate, Mo back contact, Cu(In,Ga)S2 or Cu(In,Ga)Se2 absorber, CdS buffer, and ZnO window layer. We find that hydrogen is present in all layers in concentrations exceeding the solubility of hydrogen in the corresponding crystalline bulk materials. This indicates that the deposition process and the polycrystallinity of the layers favor the uptake of hydrogen. The measured concentrations range from some 1018 H/cm3 in the absorber up to some 1021 H/cm3 in the CdS buffer layer. Effects of annealing at elevated temperatures are reported.

Notes: Abstract PAC experiments using181Hf as probe atom were performed in Ta samples containing 1.1 at% of N and loaded with 0.2 at% of H or of 1.6 at% of D. At room temperature only the known frequency due to N is present. Below 100K or 140K, for H and D respectively, the amplitude of this interaction decreases and two new interaction frequencies characterized by V0=240MHz, η=0.80 and V0=250 MHz, η=0.40 appear. These frequencies are attributed to H(D) trapped by N in the vicinity of the probe atom181Hf. The disappearance of these interactions at 100K and 140K is interpreted as a release of H (D) from Hf but not from N. From the data the jump rates of H(D) around N in Ta are derived.

Notes: Abstract Oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O6+x samples were investigated by the muon spin rotation technique in zero external field. In an intermediate oxygen concentration region we find strongly relaxing μSR signals indicating the existence of internal magnetic fields. The strongly relaxing signals were observed only in samples with superconducting transition temperatures below 50 K. As an interpretation of the data we suggest that magnetic ordering and superconductivity coexist in these samples within regions of extensions of a few lattice constants, but not necessarily on the same sites.

Notes: Abstract Zero-field μSR studies of some hexagonal intermetallic compounds are described. Our LaNI5 data provide information on the muon localisation site. This site could be one of the deuterium sites deduced from neutron diffraction. A comparison of the temperature dependence of the exponential damping rate, λ(T), of our samples shows that λ(T) is strongly influenced by crystal field effects. The TbNi5 spectra exhibit two components forT〈60 K. We discuss the possible explanations of this result. We see a μSR signal below the magnetic phase transition in GdNi5. This makes the study of the spin-lattice relaxation rate possible in the ordered magnetic state.

Notes: Abstract Muon spin rotation (μSR) experiments were performed on polycrystalline samples of R2Fe14B in zero applied field. In all samples a single spin precession frequency was observed. In Nd2Fe14B and Ho2Fe14B pronounced anomalies showed up in the temperature dependence of the μSR frequencies at the spin reorientation temperatures of 150 K and 60 K, respectively. Our data can be explained with the assumption that only thec-axis component of the magnetization is sampled by the muon. We find a strong dependence of the local field on the magnetic moment of the rare earth ion. This is in accordance with calculations of the dipolar fields at the assumed muon stopping site.

Notes: Abstract In the present paper we will review studies of local magnetism by the muon spin rotation technique in two classes of High-TC superconductors, namely La2-xSrxCuO4 and YBa2Cu3Ox. In addition we present some new results for the existence of local magnetism in hydrogen doped YBa2Cu3O7.

Notes: Abstract Superconducting YBa2Cu3O y samples were doped with hydrogen and investigated by the muon spin rotation technique. For hydrogen concentrations above a thresholdx, which depends on the oxygen stoichiometry, we find a well defined precession signal in zero external field. This is a clear indication of magnetic ordering in these samples. In samples with a smaller hydrogen content no magnetic ordering was found. For these samples however, the depolarization rate σ(T→0) as measured in a transverse external field depends strongly on the hydrogen content. Our data are consistent with the assumption that hydrogen acts as an electron donor, filling the hole states in YBa2Cu3O y .

Notes: Abstract Hydrogenated YBa2Cu3O7 with [H]/cell=2.0 was studied by X-ray diffraction, μSR and1H-NMR. For the first time, the hydride phase (16% larger c-axis) known from thin film experiments was seen in a bulk sample. A comparison of the μSR and NMR results shows that the 15 mT site (2 MHz in μSR) is the stable position for the proton and muon. The three other muon sites (4 MHz line and two exponentially decaying components) are metastable.

Notes: It is demonstrated that the various procedures recommended in the literature for the determination of the crystalline fraction in polyethylene specimens by means of X-ray diffraction lead to consistent results if certain errors made by some of the previous authors are avoided.A simple procedure which is not inferior to other more elaborate ones and does not require corrections for LORENTZ factor, polarization or incoherent radiation is presented. It is easily adaptable for routine work.Attention is drawn to the observed close correlation between crystallinity and line width of the crystalline interferences.
