Notes: Abstract The lubrication regime displayed by human salivas (parotid and submandibular-sublingual), purified salivary molecules (the mucins MG1 and MG2 and α-amylases), and selected artificial salivas (Oracare D, Saliva Substitute, and Orthana) was assessed in vitro using a friction-testing device. Thin-film (boundary) lubrication was observed for all of the salivary samples and two of the artificial salivas examined. Oracare D, a glycerol-based artificial saliva, was the exception since it lubricated by a thick-film (hydrodynamic) regime. On a molar basis, the best lubricants of the purified salivary molecules were MG1 〉 MG2 ≈ nonglycosylated α-amylases ≈ glycosylated α-amylases.

Notes: Abstract Background: To determine the predictive value of a single lesion versus multifocal disease for differentiating primary and secondary gastrointestinal (GI) lymphoma on barium studies. Methods: Our study group consisted of 90 cases of non-Hodgkin's GI lymphoma from the radiologic archives of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in which barium studies had been performed. Each of those studies was reviewed jointly by two of the authors to determine in a blinded fashion whether the patients had a single lesion or multifocal disease (defined as two or more discrete lesions). Medical and pathologic records were then reviewed to determine whether these patients had primary (defined as lymphoma arising in the GI tract) or secondary (defined as disseminated lymphoma with associated GI tract involvement) GI lymphoma. The final clinical diagnosis was then correlated with the radiographic findings to test the hypothesis that a single lesion is more likely to be associated with primary GI lymphoma and that multifocal disease is more likely to be associated with secondary GI lymphoma. Results: Sixty-eight patients had a single lesion in the GI tract on barium studies; 52 (76%) of these patients had primary GI lymphoma and 16 (24%) had secondary GI lymphoma. Another 22 patients had multifocal disease on barium studies; 20 (91%) of these patients had secondary GI lymphoma and two (9%) had primary GI lymphoma. Conclusion: The predictive value of a single lesion for primary GI lymphoma on barium studies was 76%, and the predictive value of multifocal disease for secondary GI lymphoma was 91%. Thus, our data suggest that it is often possible to differentiate these two forms of GI lymphoma on the basis of the radiographic findings.

Notes: Various chemical additives are commonly used in viscose to reduce the swelling of the resultant fibers and films. It was found that inorganic sodium salts, introduced into the additive-containing viscose, alter the action of the additive. The following salts, listed in order of the values of gel swelling ratios obtained with them, interfere with the deswelling of the viscose during regeneration: citrate 〉 thiosulfate 〉 tartrate 〉 sulfate 〉 chloride = phosphate = thiocyanate 〉 acetate 〉 nitrate 〉 control. Sodium idodide did not affect the usual deswelling of the films, and sodium sulfide and sodium carbonate caused the films to deswell slightly more than the control sample. It was proposed that the effectiveness of the salts follows a Hofmeister or lyotropic series.

Notes: In a study of isomorphic behavior, it was found that the melting point - composition curve of the copolyamides prepared from caprolactam and p-aminomethylcyclohexylcarboxylic acid was sigmoidal, indicating that the methylcyclohexyl group was interchangeable in the crystal lattice with aliphatic carbon atoms of ω-aminocaproic acid. On the other hand, the benzyl group in the copolymers of caprolactam and p-aminomethylbenzoic acid did not interchange as well, and only partial isomorphism occurred. The analogous meta derivatives, m-aminomethylcyclohexylcarboxylic acid and m-aminomethylbenzoic acid, did not fulfill the spatial requirements of caprolactam. Although V-shaped melting point - composition curves resulted, the disturbance in the crystal network was more severe with the m-phenyl derivative than with the m-cyclohexyl derivative.
