    Notes: A new method of fabrication of layered structure of silicon is presented. The silicon was evaporated continuously under a modulated pressure of hydrogen. A contrast was dense and less dense silicon layers is evidenced by low-angle x-ray scattering and cross-sectional electron microscopy.

    Notes: The interdiffusivity and chemical ordering in compositionally modulated (Λ=20 to 40 A(ring)) amorphous Fe70Si30/Si thin films have been measured from the decay of the satellite intensities of the (000) x-ray scattering peak during isothermal anneals in the temperature range 373–473 K. Diffusivities as low as 10−26 to 10−25 m2 s−1 have been measured. A linear dependence of D˜Λ on 1/Λ2 has been observed, providing the evidence of chemical ordering in Fe-Si alloy and leading to the determination of a critical wavelength.

    Notes: We have investigated the effect of structural disorder on the valence of cerium in different families of amorphous alloys prepared by coevaporation on to cryogenic substrates. The Ce electronic configuration was characterized by LIII x-ray absorption spectroscopy and bulk magnetization measurements. Special attention was paid to the amorphous analogs of prototypic Kondo and strongly mixed valent compounds in the crystalline state, such as Ce Si2 (TK(approximately-equal-to)200 K), CemNin, CemCon. The cerium was found to be purely trivalent in amorphous CexSi1−x (0≤x≤0.75) alloys over both the metallic and nonmetallic concentration ranges, so that the weakly mixed valent state in crystalline CeSi2 is believed to rely on details of the crystalline symmetry and band structure. In contrast, the cerium was found to remain mixed valent in amorphous CexCo1−x (0.15≤x≤0.75) and CexNi1−x (0.30≤x≤0.60) alloys, without any significant effect of the structural disorder. The concentration dependence of the Ce valence anomaly was found to be different in the Ce Ni and Ce Co alloys. This different behavior is discussed in terms of electronic band structure.

    Notes: We have studied the 59Co and 119Sn hyperfine fields in amorphous CoSn alloys obtained by coevaporation onto cryogenic substrates. 59Co spin-echo spectra were measured at 1.4 K in zero-applied field on ferromagnetic Cox Sn1−x (0.65≤x≤0.80) alloys. NMR spectra display peaks. These peaks have a relative intensity which varies with composition, but their average location in frequency is concentration independent. From a comparison with 59Co NMR spectra in crystalline Co with dilute Sn impurities, it is inferred that the structures observed in NMR spectra for amorphous CoSn alloys are related to the number of Sn first neighbors of the Co resonant nuclei. Thus, short-range effects are thought to be predominant in determining the Co on-site moments in these alloys, as well as in amorphous Co alloys with other s-p elements. 119Sn Mössbauer spectra were measured at room temperature on paramagnetic Cox Sn1−x (0.40≤x≤0.55) alloys. Comparison is made with the stoichiometric CoSn crystalline compound, where quadrupolar interactions give rise to an admixture of two doublets corresponding to the two inequivalent Sn sites. Mössbauer spectra for the amorphous CoSn alloys display a single doublet identified as arising from Sn atoms in trigonal prisms arrangements. These results are discussed within the frame of current models for the structure of metallic glasses.

    Notes: Cell-mediated immunity plays a key role in containing the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the host. The induction of an antibody response or a mixed cell-mediated and humoral response is frequently associated with tuberculosis disease or a decrease in the ability to control M. tuberculosis load. We recently reported the induction of similar immune responses and protection by rectal, subcutaneous (SC) or intradermal administration of Mycobacterium bovis BCG in adult mice, guinea pigs and macaques. The rectal immunization, which did not induce the side-effects associated with parenteral routes (axillary adenitis) and which could be used to reduce the risks of viral transmission associated with unsafe injections in the developing world, was analysed and compared in newborn and adult BALB/c mice. The rectal and SC immunization induced, in mice immunized as newborns or as adults, a mixed T helper 1/T helper 2 (Th1/Th2) immune response; however, particularly in adult mice, after SC administration of BCG, the level of Th2 immune response is significantly higher than it is by the rectal route. Six months after immunization with BCG, rectal and SC delivery induced similar levels of protective immunity against a virulent challenge with M. tuberculosis strain (H37Rv) in mice immunized as adults, but the rectal BCG delivery triggered stronger protection than the SC delivery if mice were immunized as newborns.

    Notes: Background Airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), chronic airway inflammation and predominance of the T helper type-2 (Th2; IL-4, IL-5, IL-13) over the Th1 (IL-2, IFN-γ) immune response are hallmarks of asthma. Alveolar macrophages (AM) are the most numerous cells in the airway lumen, where they represent the first immune cell population encountered by inhaled antigens. AM act as antigen-presenting cells (APC) and they release various soluble mediators and enzymes. AM thus play a prominent role in the modulation of the local immunity in airways. In allergic airways, AM have been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammation by promoting the Th2 versus the Th1 cytokine patterns.Objectives Infections with attenuated bacteria or challenges with bacterial products may involve AM. Such stimuli have been shown to potentially restore the Th1/Th2 balance in asthmatic airways, but they also induce the release of inflammatory mediators. We investigated the response of AM when stimulated by two preparations of non-proliferating Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG).Methods We evaluated the cytokine production by AM from BP2 and C57BL/6 mice when cultured with heat-killed (HK) and extended freeze-dried (EFD) BCG. We then investigated in vivo the release of soluble factors in the airway lumen of mice after instillation of these BCG preparations. Finally, we studied the profile of cytokine transcripts in the lung of mice pre-treated with BCG and then challenged with ovalbumin (OVA).Results HK BCG induced the production of both TNF-α and IL-12, and did not prevent high levels of Th2 cytokine transcripts. In contrast, EFD BCG induced a response dominated by the production of IL-12, with no later over-expression of Th2 cytokine transcripts.Conclusion Our results show that EFD BCG induce the release of the Th1-promoting cytokine IL-12 by AM, without the deleterious effects of HK BCG. These data suggest that EFD BCG may be considered as a potential novel treatment to restore the Th1/Th2 imbalance in asthma.

    Notes: X-ray diffraction in multilayer structures is determined by the electronic concentration profile, which depends both on the atomic concentration and on the specific volume. Probing with photons of different wavelengths in the vicinity of an absorption edge (anomalous X-ray scattering) produces a variation of the scattered intensity, which allows the separation of both contributions. A test of the feasibility of this method on several multilayer samples is presented. The technique appears to be sensitive enough to measure specific volume ratios with a precision of about 5%.

This method allowed correct demonstration of mural wall abnormalities in all patients and therefore represents a simple, inexpensive, and efficient modality for CT study of the rectum and sigmoid.

    Notes: Abstract A marked difference in echogenicity between the anterior and posterior parts of the pancreatic head was demonstrated by pancreatic ultrasound in 4 patients. This finding could not be related to local pancreatic or peripancreatic pathology. In all patients the dorsal portion of the head, including the uncinate process, appeared less echogenic than the ventral part of the head, body, and tail. The level of demarcation was identical in all 4 cases, coinciding with the expected fusion line of the embryological dorsal and ventral pancreatic origin. Pathology available in 1 patient showed an uneven lipomatosis as an explanation for this hitherto unreported observation.

    Notes: Abstract “Skip areas” in focal steatosis describes a newly proposed “subsegmental type” of focal steatosis, which differs in both extent and topography from the more classic “lobar or segmental type” of focal steatosis. In the subsegmental type of steatosis, fatty infiltration can be considered homogeneous through-out the liver, with the exception of small flattened portions of less affected parenchyma, called “ skip areas.” These regions are mainly located in the subcapsular areas or along the interlobar fissures or the gallbladder bed. Observations using ultrasound in vivo, as well as on postmortem in vitro angiograms, suggest that both the extent and topography of these skip areas can be explained by local differences in vascular anatomy.
