    Notes: Estimation of the phosphate adsorption capacity in highly weathered acid soils is crucial for adopting appropriate phosphate fertilization practices. In this work, the salt sorption effect was used to develop a method for estimating phosphate adsorption capacity from the decrease in electrical conductivity of a potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution brought in contact with acidic soil samples from surface and subsurface horizons of Acrisols. The method is fast and simple and requires only the use of a conductimeter.

    Notes: Spinal fentanyl can improve analgesia during Caesarean section. However, there is evidence that, following its relatively short-lived analgesic effect, there is a more prolonged spinal opioid tolerance effect. The effectiveness of postoperative epidural fentanyl analgesia may therefore be reduced following the use of spinal fentanyl at operation. This randomised, double-blind study was designed␣to assess whether patient-controlled epidural fentanyl could produce effective analgesia following 25 µg of spinal fentanyl at operation. Patients undergoing elective Caesarean section received spinal bupivacaine combined with either fentanyl 25 µg (fentanyl group; n = 18) or␣normal saline (saline group; n = 18). Patient-controlled epidural fentanyl was used for postoperative analgesia. The fentanyl group used a mean of 23.4 (SD 14.5) µg.h−1 of fentanyl, compared with 27.0 (10.8) µg.h−1 for the saline group (p = 0.41). Using a 0–100 mm visual analogue score for pain, the maximum pain score recorded at rest for the fentanyl group was median 24 [IQR 15–35] mm, compared with 15 [13–45] mm for the saline group (p = 0.41). The maximum pain score recorded on coughing for the fentanyl group was 29 [24–46] mm, compared with 27 [19–47] mm for the saline group (p = 0.44). Nine of the fentanyl group rated postoperative analgesia as excellent and nine as good, compared with 10 of the saline group who rated it as excellent and eight as good (p = 0.74). Epidural fentanyl can produce effective analgesia following the use of 25 µg spinal fentanyl at Caesarean section.

    Notes: Summary.  Surgery in haemophilic patients with inhibitor against factor (F)VIII or FIX is high risk. Surgery may be performed with the administration of sufficiently high dose of FVIII in patients with low-response inhibitor or who, despite having a high response, present a low inhibitor titre at the time of surgery. The use of high doses of FX is more complicated in patients with a low-titre FIX inhibitor, as there is a high risk of anaphylactic reactions. In the case of patients with high-titre inhibitors, several treatments have been proposed, such as porcine FVIII, recombinant FVIIa (rFVIIa), and activated prothrombin complex concentrate (APCC). We present our 20 years' experience in the treatment and subsequent management of haemophilic patients with inhibitor in surgery and evaluate the results obtained with the products available for haemostatic control in 64 surgical procedures. The efficacy we obtained with FVIII is good in 100% of the cases described; we had no haemorrhagic complication (HC) in the 18 procedures in which it was used (three major and 15 minor surgery). With APCC we obtained excellent results with only one HC in a synoviorthesis in the form of bleeding and haematomas out of 32 procedures. Good results were obtained with rFVIIa with few haemorrhagic episodes. Thus, in major surgery there was one HC out of three cases. In minor surgery, greater efficacy was observed using extremely large doses of rFVIIa (≥ 120 mg kg−1 2h−1) because of the shorter half-life of this factor in this type of patients.

    Notes: Fire affects large parts of the dry Mediterranean shrubland, resulting in erosion and losses of plant nutrients. We have attempted to measure these effects experimentally on a calcareous hillside representative of such shrubland. Experimental fires were made on plots (4 m × 20 m) in which the fuel was controlled to obtain two different fire intensities giving means of soil surface temperature of 439°C and 232°C with temperatures exceeding 100°C lasting for 36 min and 17 min. The immediate and subsequent changes induced by fire on the soil's organic matter content and other soil chemical properties were evaluated, together with the impact of water erosion.Seven erosive rain events, which occurred after the experimental fires (from August 1995 to December 1996), were selected, and on them runoff and sediment produced from each plot were measured. The sediments collected were weighed and analysed. Taking into account the variations induced by fire on the soil properties and their losses by water erosion, estimates of the net inputs and outputs of the soil system were made. Results show that the greatest losses of both soil and nutrients took place in the 4 months immediately after the fire. Plots affected by the most intense fire showed greater losses of soil (4077 kg ha−1) than those with moderate fire intensity (3280 kg ha−1). The unburned plots produced the least sediment (72.8 kg ha−1). Organic matter and nutrient losses by water erosion were related to the degree of fire intensity. However, the largest losses of N-NH4+ and N-NO3– by water erosion corresponded to the moderate fire (8.1 and 7.5 mg N m−2, respectively).

    Notes: Starch concentration, sequence of appearance of sucrose, glucose and fructose and activity of some enzymes of sucrose synthesis were followed during ripening of preclimacteric bananas (Musa acuminatd). As starch was degraded sucrose content increased and preceded formation of glucose and fructose. At the same time, while UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase activity remained constant, activity of sucrose synthetase and invertase increased. The observed sugar and enzyme changes indicated that starch to sucrose transformation via glucose-1-phosphate-UDP-glucose may be an important mechanism for starch disappearance during ripening. The hypothesis was confirmed with thin banana slices infiltrated with [14C(U)]glucose-1-phosphate: the label was incorporated into sucrose three times faster for climacteric than for preclimacteric fruits. Pyrophosphorylase activity and climacteric induced activation of sucrose synthetase could be inhibited by protein and nucleic acids synthesis inhibitors.

    Notes: Thigh meat (raw and cooked) was analyzed for oxysterols, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) activity in order to assess oxidative stability. The results showed that no beneficial effect was obtained by the removal of iron and copper from the animal diet. On the contrary, the oxysterol production, the TBARS, and the GSHPx activity tended to indicate a higher oxidative stress in cooked meat from the chickens deprived of iron and copper. This effect could not be explained by differences in tissue α-tocopherol levels. Finally, correlation analyses showed that the 4 parameters studied (oxysterols, TBARS, GSHPx, α-tocopherol) were interrelated.

    Notes: Building construction is a great area for automation, but the incorporation of robots in the construction industry is a very slow affair because of the intrinsic difficulties. New requirements, however, now call for material-handling manipulators to be used to help operators move and position heavy payloads without accidents. Builders are also being encouraged to provide automatic tools by the EU labour legislation, which limits the maximum payload that operators are allowed to carry. This paper introduces a manipulator to assist the operators in handling and installing pre-manufactured plaster panels for indoor-wall construction. This six degrees of freedom manipulator is fixed between floor and ceiling so that it can carry heavy payloads without tumbling. The whole system is easily assembled and disassembled to facilitate transportation between construction sites. The system's main features and its functions are presented.

    Notes: Summary.  A middle-aged woman was admitted to the hospital after being found unconscious at home. A brain CT scan excluded an intracranial bleed or other focal abnormality. Laboratory analysis showed hyponatraemia (sodium: 121 mmol L−1) and a low plasma osmolality, with normal sodium excretion and urine osmolality. A diagnosis of hyponatraemic coma was made. The patient was treated with water restriction; 24 h later the sodium was 135 mmol L−1 and the patient was neurologically fully recovered. The patient, who suffered from von Willebrand's disease, had received desmopressin and ibuprofen for analgesia 2 days before after a dental intervention. She had received desmopressin several times in the past without any complications. A few patients treated with desmopressin for coagulation abnormalities have been reported to develop water intoxication and severe hyponatraemia resulting in seizures and coma. By inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) potentiate the effect of water reabsorption in the renal tubules of vasopressin, therefore enhancing water retention. Desmopressin and NSAIDs should not be used in combination in patients with bleeding disorders, but it is often followed in clinical practice. In addition, this is probably not an unusual situation in patients treated with desmopressin for other ‘non-haemorrhagic’ indications. This report emphasizes the need for practitioners to be aware of this rare but severe complication.
