    Notes: We report a histogenetic study of the bipolar cells of the chick embryo retina between days 5 and 9, using the Golgi technique. On day 8, at the level of the developing outer plexiform layer, small delicate spines appear on the outer processes of the bipolar cells, which represents the commencement of their dendritic ramification. At a later staige in development che detachment of Landolt's club from the outer limiting membrane is observed in some cells The inner ramifications of the bipolar cell, at the inner plexiform layer, appear later than those of the outer process.

    Notes: Abstract Enclosure experiments were performed at Akanoi Bay, Lake Biwa, in 1995 to determine whether the blooms of cyanobacterial algae changed thermal stratification in the lake. We used four rectangular enclosures, each 10 m × 10 m, with a volume of 200 m3, which were open to the sediments. Two enclosures, A and B, were mixed artificially by aquatic pumps from 1000 to 1400 every day, and the other two enclosures, C and D, were controls with no mixing. The experiment was conducted during late summer from August 3 to September 27. Chlorophyll a concentrations were highest in enclosure D, followed by enclosure C, both of which were controls without mixing. Enclosure A had lower concentrations than enclosures C and D, and enclosure B had the lowest concentrations. No large cyanobacterial algae blooms of Anabaena sp. and Microcystis sp. were seen in the mixed enclosures A and B. In enclosures C and D, blooms of Anabaena sp. occurred in the middle of August, and Microcystis sp. later became dominant in enclosure D at the end of August. In enclosure D, the water temperature changed over the diel cycle before August 17, with thermal stratification during the day and complete mixing at night. After August 17, as Anabaena sp. and Microcystis sp. became dominant, the temperature at the bottom of the enclosure did not change clearly over the 24-h cycle. The APE (available potential energy) density (a measure of water column stability) in the enclosures increased by almost 100% when the biovolume of Anabaena sp. + Microcystis sp. exceeded 20 mm3 l−1. These results indicate that blooms of Anabaena sp. and Microcystis sp. can increase the available potential energy in the water column and create more stable stratification for their growth.

    Notes: Abstract This study investigate the potential contribution of nitrogen fixation by indigenous cyanobacteria to rice production in the rice fields of Valencia (Spain). N2-fixing cyanobacteria abundance and N2 fixation decreased with increasing amounts of fertilizers. Grain yield increased with increasing amounts of fertilizers up to 70 kg N ha-1. No further increase was observed with 140 kg N ha-1. Soil N was the main source of N for rice, only 8–14% of the total N incorporated by plants derived from 15N fertilizer. Recovery of applied 15N-ammonium sulphate by the soil–plant system was lower than 50%. Losses were attributed to ammonia volatilization, since only 0.3–1% of applied N was lost by denitrification. Recovery of 15N from labeled cyanobacteria by the soil–plant system was higher than that from chemical fertilizers. Cyanobacterial N was available to rice plant even at the tillering stage, 20 days after N application.

    Notes: The sequence of differentiation of the cerebellar granule cell in chick embryos from the eighth to the 15th days of incubation has been studied in Golgi-stained celloidin sections. In the germinal-cell phase, the presumptive granule cell sends out one or two horizontal processes which may originate either in the body of the cell or in the extension which attaches it to the pial surface. Thus the germinal cell may be converted into either a monopolar or a bipolar presumptive granular cell. Bipolar cells may have two processes of the same length (symmetrical cells) or of unequal length (asymmetrical cells). In the symmetrical as well as asymmetrical bipolar cells the leading process is formed, by means of which the perikaryon emigrates until it situates itself definitely in the internal granular layer. Thus, symmetrical and asymmetrical bipolar cells give rise to a granule cell with parallel fibers of equal or different lengths. The monopolar element may originate a second process or may remain in the monopolar phase until it reaches the internal granular layer. Once there, it completes the formation of the parallel fibers.
