    Notes: In order to examine magnetic properties of a spin-glass Mn0.55Mg0.45TiO3 under magnetic fields, dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, muon spin relaxation (μSR), and neutron scattering measurements have been performed. A freezing temperature observed by the dc magnetization and the ac susceptibility strongly depends on magnetic field, H. But for the latter, the H dependence becomes weak, as the measuring frequency increases. In the μSR and the neutron scattering measurements, no significant field dependence is observed. These results demonstrate that the field dependence of the freezing temperature becomes weaker, as the time scale of measurements shortens. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Scrotal calcinosis has been classified as a form of idiopathic calcinosis cutis. However, the pathogenesis of the calcified nodules has not been fully elucidated: it is still unclear whether the condition is truly idiopathic, or the result of breakdown of calcified epithelial cysts. We describe a 29-year-old Japanese patient with scrotal calcinosis originating from epithelial cysts. Light microscopy revealed a large epithelial cyst containing von Kossa-positive material and several small dilated ductal structures beside the cyst. The epithelia of the cyst and ductal structures were connected, showing similar eccrine duct differentiation on immunohistochemical staining and electron microscopy. In the cyst lumen, calcium was present as needle-shaped crystals. The pathogenetic mechanism of calcium deposition seemed to be due to excessive production and discharge of matrical debris and sulphated mucopolysaccharides, which derived from luminal cells, and their accumulation in the lumina.

    Notes: Aim:  To demonstrate the antitumour effects of nobiletin (5,6,7,8,3′,4′-hexamethoxyflavone), a citrus flavonoid extracted from Citrus depressa Hayata, on human gastric cancer cell lines TMK-1, MKN-45, MKN-74 and KATO-III.Materials and methods:  3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, the TdT-mediated dUTP biotin nick-end labelling (TUNEL) method and cell-cycle analysis revealed that nobiletin acted on these cells in several ways, namely by direct cytotoxicity, induction of apoptosis and modulation of cell cycle. The efficacy of combined treatment of nobiletin with a conventional anticancer drug, CDDP, was also examined. Treatment with nobiletin 24 h prior to CDDP administration showed a synergistic effect compared to the control.Conclusions:  Although the effective dose and administration route of nobiletin require further investigation, our study represents a potential successful linking of this compound with the treatment of gastric cancer.

Objective and Design: We examined the effects of aceclofenac and its metabolites on the production of pro-collagenase-1/pro-matrix metalloproteinase-1 (proMMP-1), pro-gelatinase A/proMMP-2, pro-stromelysin-1/proMMP-3 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) by rheumatoid synovial cells.¶Materials: Synovial cells were obtained from patients with rheumatoid arthritis.¶Treatment: Cultures of confluent cells were treated with interleukin-1β (IL-1β)(1 ng/ml) and/or test drugs (0.3-30 μM) for 48 h.¶Methods: Production of proMMPs and TIMP-1 was monitored by Western blotting or gelatin zymography. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was measured by an enzyme immunoassay.¶Results: 4′-Hydroxy aceclofenac, a major metabolite of aceclofenac, down-regulated both basal and IL-1β-induced production of proMMP-1 and proMMP-3 at a concentration sufficient to suppress PGE2 production without modulating proMMP-2 or TIMP-1, whereas aceclofenac itself had no marked effect on the production of proMMPs.¶Conclusions: Down-regulation of proMMP-1 and proMMP-3 production by 4′-hydroxy aceclofenac may contribute to the therapeutic effect of aceclofenac on rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

    Notes: Summary The review of the literature on Cheyne-Stokes respiratory periods reveals enormous variation of the opinions expressed. The original description concerned periodicity characterized by rhythmic changes of respiratory phases and respiratory pauses in a relation of 60 ∶ 15 seconds. In the respiratory phase there were 30 respirations of increasing depths and frequency at the beginning of the phase and decreasing depths and frequency at the end of the phase. Literature data about Cheyne-Stokes respiration comprise a multiplicity of all rhythmic forms. The duration of respiratory cycles varies between 12 and 130 seconds. The relation of the respiratory phase and respiratory pause between 6 ∶ 4 or 75 ∶ 70 seconds, and the number of breaths between 3 and 30 during one respiratory phase. Cheyne-Stokes periods were observed in healthy subjects as well as in patients with neurological, neurosurgical, cardiac, pulmonary and paediatric diseases. Cheyne-Stokes periods were explained as sequel of prolongation of circulation time between pulmonary alveoli and respiratory centre, through increased sensitivity of the respiratory centre to CO2, diminished sensitivity of the respiratory centre to CO2 and O2-deficit, local blood flow disturbances, section of pathways in the brain stem with disinhibition of basic rhythms, brain immaturity, alterations of consciousness, and respiratory obstructions. Rhythmic changes of the heart beat, of excitability of the heart muscle, of blood pressure, of EEG and of neurological and mental signs were observed. In spite of numerous observations detailed analysis of the respiratory cycle was performed in only a few cases. Major studies are lacking.

    Notes: Summary Analysis of uniform respiratory rhythms in 35 neurosurgical patients showed that the mean duration of respiratory periods was between 8.60 and 71.51 seconds. The scatter around the mean value increases with the increase of the duration of the respiratory period. For an individual patient there is a one-peak distribution of the duration of respiratory periods. The duration of respiratory periods increases with age. There is a group of patients in whom the respiratory periods last over 40 seconds. This group is difficult to classify. There are no correlations between the acid-base values, blood gas values, and the duration of respiratory periods. Analysis of 10 autopsy cases showed lesions in the brain stem without any particular prevalence.

    Notes: Summary The analysis of cycles of periodic breathing (Cheyne-Stokes rhythms) in 35 patients showed wide variability of mean values of respiratory phases. The respiratory pauses are usually shorter and the scatter of the mean values is smaller. Only in four cases were respiratory pauses longer than respiratory phases. The duration of the respiratory phase becomes extended through the increase of number of single respirations. The latter also shows a very small scatter. The respiratory rate in 32 out of 35 patients was higher than normal and is to be considered as tachypnoea.
