Notes: Abstract In a German paternity test, an alleged father was excluded only by reverse homozygosity of ORM1 phenotypes (mother ORM1 S, child ORM1 S and alleged father ORM1 F1) out of the 28 classical and DNA markers investigated. Without the ORM1 system the biostatistical probability of paternity was calculated to exceed 99.9999%. The intensity of the immunoprinted bands of the ORM1 protein for the child and alleged father after isoelectric focusing appeared to be reduced to about half. To identify a possible null allele, gene-specific amplification followed by single-strand conformation polymorphism and sequencing analyses were carried out. Deletion of one of the two copies of a 4 bp direct repeat sequence (GTCT) in exon 4 of the consensus sequence of ORM1*F1 was observed in the child and alleged father. Thus, the sharing of a rare mutant gene, ORM1*Q0köln, increased the probability of paternity.

Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. To investigate whether proinsulin C peptide influences sympathetic nerve activity directly or indirectly through parasympathetic nerve activity. Methods. The proliferative response of splenic lymphocytes to Concanavalin A (ConA response) which is known to be suppressed by subjection of rats to footshock or intracerebroventricular injection of corticotropin-releasing factor through sympathetic nerve activation was measured. Effect of C peptide alone or before subjection to footshock or injection of corticotropin-releasing factor was examined. Results. Intraperitoneal injection of C peptide was without effect on the basal ConA response, while subjection to footshock or injection of corticotropin-releasing factor lowered it. In contrast, prior injection of C peptide obviated the footshock and corticotropin-releasing factor-induced suppression of the response. When given intracerebroventricularly, C peptide was also effective at much smaller doses. Prior injection of atropine cancelled the C-peptide effects. Conclusion/interpretation. Our results indicate that C peptide counteracts the sympathetic nerve-mediated suppression of splenic lymphocyte proliferation in an atropine-sensitive manner. Thus, C peptide probably activates the parasympathetic nervous system through the afferent mechanism, that in turn antagonizes the sympathetic nerve-mediated suppression of splenic lymphocyte functions. Notes: Abstract The presence of mariner-like elements in four strains of the housefly, Musca domestica, was surveyed by PCR. Using the inverted terminal repeat (ITR) sequences of the Mos 1element as primers, DNAs were successfully amplified from all strains of the housefly. Southern blot analysis indicated that these amplified DNAs were repetitive sequences in the genome of M. domestica. Sequence analyses of cloned PCR products showed that they were 45% identical to the Mos 1element. These fragments appeared to be nonfunctional, because they contained no intact open reading frame (ORF) capable of encoding transposase. We conclude that these DNAs are degraded mariner-like elements (MLEs) in M. domestica. Because these endogenous MLEs in M. domesticado not encode any functional proteins, they probably would not affect the behavior of mariner-based vectors if such were introduced into this species as transformation vectors.

Notes: For the rapid identification of additives such as antioxidant, ultraviolet absorber, and slipping agent, polypropylene containing such additives was heated in a tube connected directly to the inlet system of a mass spectrometer. The vapor of the additives evaporating out of the polypropylene was led to the reservoir and then submitted to mass spectrometry to give spectra for identification.

Notes: Gel permeation chromatography, using polystyrene gel and tetrahydrofuran as solvent, has been applied to hydroxybenzophenones, esters of salicylic acid, alkylphenols, alkylated methylenediphenols, and phenol-formaldehyde condensation products. The difference between the calculated molecular volume of these phenolic compounds and that obtained by actual determination with GPC has been ascribed to tetrahydrofuran solvation of the phenolic hydroxyl group. Furthermore, it has become clear that THF solvation is affected by the steric hindrance of ortho-substituted phenol and by inactivation of the phenolic hydroxyl group resulting from internal hydrogen bonding.
