Notes: Abstract  Pax proteins play a diverse role in early animal development and contain the characteristic paired domain, consisting of two conserved helix-turn-helix motifs. In many Pax proteins the paired domain is fused to a second DNA binding domain of the paired-like homeobox family. By amino acid sequence alignments, secondary structure prediction, 3D-structure comparison, and phylogenetic reconstruction, we analyzed the relationship between Pax proteins and members of the Tc1 family of transposases, which possibly share a common ancestor with Pax proteins. We suggest that the DNA binding domain of an ancestral transposase (proto-Pax transposase) was fused to a homeodomain shortly after the emergence of metazoans about one billion years ago. Using the transposase sequences as an outgroup we reexamined the early evolution of the Pax proteins. Our novel evolutionary scenario features a single homeobox capturing event and an early duplication of Pax genes before the divergence of porifera, indicating a more diverse role of Pax proteins in primitive animals than previously expected.

Notes: Abstract A study of a 150000-picture exposure of ¯pd at 5.5 GeV/c yielded 152 events satisfying the hypothesis ¯pd→p s π+2π−π0. For the events with proton spectator in the momentum range 100–280 MeV/c we obtained the cross section of 0.11±0.02 mb. Assuming the validity of the impulse approximation we estimate a cross section of 0.43±0.06 mb for the reaction ¯pn→ π+2π−π0. The rate for single ϱ meson production and an upper limit for double ϱ production are given. A modified multiperipheral Regge model was used in order to describe the general features of the data.

Notes: Abstract The mean life of the 131.5 keV, 7/2− state in157Gd was measured using a modified version of the microwave method. The result obtained is $$\tau = 137 \pm 7ps.$$ .The deduced magnetic parametersg K, gR are discussed and compared with theory.

Notes: Repetitive mass spectrometric scanning of gas-liquid chromatographic effuents at short (6 to 15 s) intervals, with a digital computer for data acquisition, reduction and display, allows plots (mass chromatograms) to be made of the intensities of specific ion fragments. Plotting of m/e values characteristic for certain classes of compounds and/or individual components reveals the location of constituents in the gas chromatogram. This technique was applied to the identification of trimethylsilyl derivatives of unsubstituted and 2-hydroxy fatty acid methyl esters in mixtures obtained from acid catalyzed methanolysis of cat brain galactocerebrosides. The plot of total ionization intensity vs scan number generated the gas-liquid chromatogram. Mass chromatograms of m/e 73 and [M - 59]+ gave the locations in the gas-liquid chromatogram of the hydroxy fatty acid derivatives, and mass chromatograms of m/e 74 and [M]+ located the unsubstituted fatty acid derivatives. Integrated ion intensities were used to determine the composition of the mixture of fatty acids.
