    Notes: The microstructure of Al2O3 formed by oxidation of a model NiCrAlY alloy during electron-beam physical vapor deposition of ZrO2–7.6 mol% YO1.5 is examined and compared with that formed on the bare substrate. The growth rate, morphology, and chemical composition of the oxide vary among the different constituents of the alloy surface and are further influenced by the O2 partial pressure and the physical presence of the thermal barrier coating (TBC) layer. These differences, however, are largely limited to the outer oxide layer. The interplay between the TBC and the growing oxide leads to the formation of a fine-grain Al2O3–ZrO2“mixed zone” within the thermally grown oxide. A mechanism is outlined to explain this behavior, based on the dissolution of ZrO2 in a transient Al2O3 structure growing by outward diffusion of Al, and its subsequent reprecipitation when the metastable phase transforms to the stable α-Al2O3 form.

    Notes: Background SDZ ASM 981 is a selective inhibitor of inflammatory cytokine release under development for the topical treatment of atopic dermatitis. Objectives This first paediatric study was designed to measure the systemic exposure to SDZ ASM 981 in young children with atopic dermatitis treated on extensive skin areas. Methods Children 1–4 years of age referred to a tertiary care centre for their atopic dermatitis were treated twice daily for 3 weeks with 1% SDZ ASM 981 cream. SDZ ASM 981 blood concentrations were measured on day 4 and 22 (last day) of treatment, and 1 week after the last application, using a radioimmunoassay with a limit of quantification of 0·5 ng mL−1. Efficacy was assessed by the Eczema Area Severity Index (EASI). Results The 10 patients included had 23–69% of their body surface area (BSA) affected at baseline. Of the 63 SDZ ASM 981 blood concentrations measured, 63% were 〈 0·5 ng mL−1; the maximum value observed was 1·8 ng mL−1. No accumulation was evidenced between days 4 and 22. The first two patients experienced a flare of atopic dermatitis that was not controlled by the study medication. In the other patients, the EASI improved by 8–89% at 3 weeks of treatment. Conclusions In these children 1–4 years of age, blood concentrations of SDZ ASM 981 during topical treatment with the 1% cream were consistently low even in the children with the most extensive areas treated (up to 69% of their BSA).

    Notes: Pseudotumour is a rare complication of haemophilia; it has previously been reported in patients with moderate or severe haemophilia and rarely in mild disease. We report a case of a proximal pseudotumour occurring in a 36-year-old patient with mild von Willebrand disease (vWD) who made a good recovery with conservative management. Surgery has been advocated as the optimal treatment for proximal pseudotumours due to the risk of continued bleeding and progression. However, in mild haemophilia or vWD, where the risk of spontaneous bleeds is low, conservative management may be an appropriate alternative.

    Notes: Neurons of the dorsal nucleus reticularis pontis caudalis (nPontc) fire rhythmically during fictive mastication, while neurons of the ventral half tend to fire tonically (Westberg et al., 2001). This paper describes the changes in the pattern of rhythmical mastication elicited by stimulation of the sensorimotor cortex during inhibition or excitation of neurons in this nucleus and adjacent parts of nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis (Rgc) in the anaesthetized rabbit. Masticatory movements and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masseter and digastric muscles produced by cortical stimulation were recorded before, during and after injections of a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) or excitatory amino acid N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) into nPontc and Rgc through a microsyringe with attached microelectrode to record neuronal activity. Lidocaine inhibited local neurons and modified the motor program, and the effects varied with the site of injection. Most injections into the ventral half of nPontc increased cycle duration, digastric burst duration and burst area. The action of lidocaine in dorsal nPontc was more variable, although burst duration and area were often decreased. The effects on the muscle activity were always bilateral. Lidocaine block of the rostromedial part of Rgc had no effect on movements or on EMGs. Injections of NMDA excited local neurons and when injected into ventral nPontc, it completely blocked mastication. Dorsal injections either had no effect or increased cycle frequency, while decreasing burst duration and area. No increases in EMG burst duration or area were observed with NMDA. Our findings suggest that neurons of ventral nPontc tonically inhibit other parts of the central pattern generator during mastication, while dorsal neurons have mixed effects. We incorporated these findings into a new model of the masticatory central pattern generator.

    Notes: In this study, we describe functional characteristics of neurons forming networks generating oral ingestive motor behaviours. Neurons in medial reticular nuclei on the right side of the brainstem between the trigeminal and hypoglossal motor nuclei were recorded in anaesthetized and paralysed rabbits during two types of masticatory-like motor patterns induced by electrical stimulation of the left (contralateral) or right (ipsilateral) cortical masticatory areas. Sixty-seven neurons in nucleus reticularis pontis caudalis (nPontc), nucleus reticularis parvocellularis (nParv), and nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis (Rgc) were studied. These were classified as phasic or tonic depending on their firing pattern during the fictive jaw movement cycle. Phasic neurons located in the dorsal part of nPontc were active during the jaw opening phase, whilst those in dorsal nParv tended to fire during the closing phase. In most neurons, burst duration and firing frequency changed between the two motor patterns, but there was little change in phase of firing. Tonic units were mainly recorded in the ventral half of nPontc, and at the junction between Rgc and caudal nParv. Cortical inputs with short latency from the contralateral masticatory area were more frequent in phasic (82%) than tonic (44%) neurons, whilst inputs from the ipsilateral cortex were equal in the two subgroups (57% and 56%). Phasic neurons had significantly shorter mean contralateral than ipsilateral cortical latencies, whilst there was no difference among tonic neurons. Intra- and perioral primary afferent inputs activated both types of neurons at oligo-synaptic latencies. Our results show that subpopulations of neurons in medial reticular nuclei extending from the caudal part of the trigeminal motor nucleus to the rostral third of the hypoglossal motor nucleus are active during the fictive masticatory motor behaviour. Unlike masticatory neurons in the lateral tegmentum, the medial subpopulations are spatially organized according to discharge pattern.

    Notes: Abstract: Ichthyosis bullosa of Siemens (IBS) is a rare disorder of cornification characterized by blister formation in the upper suprabasal layers of the epidermis. Molecular analysis of IBS has identified mutations in the keratin 2e (K2e) gene, which is located in the type II keratin gene cluster on chromosome 12q. We have studied two IBS families and have identified heterozygous point mutations in codon 493 of the K2e gene in both families. Whereas a non-conservative amino acid substitution at position 117 of the 2B region of K2e (E117K) was associated with a severe phenotype in family 1, family 2 showed mild clinical features as a result of a conservative substitution (E117D). These data suggest a phenotype–genotype correlation in these families.

    Notes: This article reports the results of a study conducted to examine the ability of the Situational Outlook Questionnaire (SOQTM) to effectively discern climates that either encourage or discourage creativity and the ability to initiate change in a team setting. The purpose of the study is to examine the concurrent criterion–related validity of the SOQ. The article explores the characteristics in an organisational climate that promote teamwork and some of the tripwires one needs to be aware of in the formation and management of teams. Nine dimensions of the climate for creativity and change as measured by the Situational Outlook Questionnaire are put forward and defined in relation to teams. The methodology and results of the study are reported. The results show that when subjects (N7equals;154) complete the SOQ based on their recollection of a best– and worst–case team experience, the measure is able to consistently and significantly discriminate between the two types of experiences. Conclusions, implications, and areas for future research to further examine the validity of the SOQ are explored.

    Notes: New insecticides, some in novel formulations, and insect repellents were tested during 1968–71 as seed dressings to protect winter wheat against attack by wheat bulb fly larvae. Preliminary tests in the laboratory were followed by trials in fields in the Midlands and eastern England. The synthetic pyrethroid insecticide resmethrin at one per cent active ingredient to weight of seed significantly decreased attack by wheat bulb fly in one trial on a sandy clay loam but not on other soils or in other years. The best protection against attack in the field was given by the organophosphorus insecticides C8874 (O,O-diethyl O-2,5-dichloro-4-iodophenyl thiophosphate) and C18244 (O-ethyl-O-(2,5-dichloro-4-iodophenyl) ethyl thiophosphohate). These compounds were more eflective than chlorfenvinphos used as a standard but are unlikely to be developed further in this country.Using polyvinyl acetate formulations, much larger amounts of pyrethroids could be applied to the seeds without decreasing plant emergence, but insect control was not improved. Pre-treatment with liquid paraffin,‘Lutanol M40’(polyvinyl methyl ether) or ‘Polyvis 200’(polybutene) improved adhesion of γ-BHC powder to seed, but effects on plant emergence and on insect control need more testing. A uniform seed to seed distribution of liquid insecticide was obtained by dipping seeds in dilute emulsions of ethion, but these seeds germinated less well than seeds treated with a commercial powder formulation of the same insecticide.Seed dressings of the insect repellents ‘Deet’(N,N-diethyl m-toluamide), MGK 11 (2,3:4,5-bis(2-butylene) tetrahydro-2-furaldehyde) or MGK 874 (2-hydroxyethyl-n-octyl sulphide) failed to protect winter wheat from attack by wheat bulb fly in the field.

    Notes: Six trials were done during three years (1966–69) in eastern England to study how known amounts of insecticidal seed dressings affect the growth of winter wheat and the severity of attack by wheat bulb fly larvae. In the first two years γ-BHC dry dressing was applied to seeds previously treated with a liquid organomercury fungicide, but in the third year seeds were dressed with powders containing fungicide mixed with the insecticides γ-BHC, chlorfenvinphos or ethion. Analysis using gas liquid chromatography showed that the ethion+ fungicide dressing stuck to the seeds much better than the chlorfenvinphos+fungicide dressing or either formulation of γ-BHC. Some ethion, γ-BHC and chlorfenvinphos later fell off the seeds, the exact amount depending on the method of drilling. Small amounts of insecticide, less than about 10μg/seed of γ-BHC or less than about 15μg/seed of the organophosphorus compounds, were ineffective against wheat bulb fly. Increasing amounts of all three insecticides progressively decreased the percentage of damaged shoots and the percentage of plants with live larvae, but more of the organophosphorus insecticides, especially of ethion, was generally needed to give the same protection as γ-BHC. No seed treatment damaged seedlings in trials on peaty loams or sandy clay loams, but seeds dressed with the standard amount of liquid organomercury fungicide and several different amounts of γ-BHC dry dressing germinated poorly in the sandy loam soils.
