Notes: Dielectric relaxation and steady-state leakage currents were studied over a range of bias voltages for Pt-electroded capacitors in which the 50-nm-thick (Ba, Sr)TiO3 dielectric layer was sputter deposited at 480 °C. A pronounced polarity dependence in the current–voltage characteristic of the capacitors was observed. Dielectric relaxation in the films showed a Curie–von Schweidler time dependence (J=J0t−n) for intervals of 3–200 s duration after application of a voltage step. The relaxation current density was found to depend linearly on electric field for fields up to 700 kV/cm and nonlinearly at higher fields. In addition to the Curie–von Schweidler relaxation currents, a time-dependent leakage current was detected under high voltage bias conditions. An empirical model developed to describe leakage currents in these films is presented. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The aim of the present study is to analyze how well physiological measures of sleepiness derived from pupillography and the Multiple Sleep Latency Test correlate with a subjective measure, the Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS) score. The results are based on data from 12 healthy participants, who underwent these tests every 2 hr from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. Sleep latencies were correlated with four different variables derived from pupillography and the SSS score. The results indicate that the physiologically based variables correspond very well. This is reflected by similar patterns of time-of-day variations, a good agreement at the group level, and correlations at the individual level, whereas the SSS shows a quite different pattern of variation. The two physiological measures of sleepiness seem to reflect the same aspect of the level of tonic central nervous activation, which is not correlated with the subjective feeling of sleepiness.

Notes: Feeding 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxiamide ribonucleoside (AICAR) through the petiole of detached young barley leaves rapidly increased activities of NADH-nitrate reductase (NR) and glutamine synthetase (GS) in leaf extracts and at least partly prevented the usual slow decrease of these enzyme activities during prolonged illumination. Further, AICAR caused drastic changes in amino acid levels: glutamine and serine levels were increased whereas glutamate and glycine were decreased, probably indicating a higher GS activity and more rapid conversion of glycine into serine. The latter may be responsible for the higher ammonium contents found in AICAR treated leaves. We tentatively suggest that GS (located in the chloroplast) and glycine decarboxylase (located in the mitochondria) are regulated in a manner similar to NR. This is discussed in the light of recent reports that 14-3-3 isoforms exist in chloroplasts and that GS binds to 14-3-3s in vitro.

Notes: Background The ADAM33 gene has recently been associated with asthma and bronchial hyper-reactivity. It codes for a disintegrin and metalloproteinase that triggers intra- and extracellular signalling by protein shedding. Objective We examined whether polymorphisms in ADAM33 are associated with asthma and related traits in two German populations. Methods We genotyped 15 intragenic single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry of allele-specific primer extension products. The transmission disequilibrium test was used for association analysis in the German asthma family study. Additionally, we tested for association of these SNPs in a case–control sample from the European Community Respiratory Health Study using Armitage's trend test. Results In both studies, we found SNPs that were significantly associated with asthma and related traits. In the family study, significant associations were observed for the SNPs F+1, ST+4 and ST+5 (with the lowest P-value for F+1, P=0.005). Remarkably, this association is seen even in the absence of linkage with two microsatellite markers from a previous genome scan either 3.1 million bases (Mb) up- or 5.6 Mb downstream. In the case–control study, SNP ST+7 (P=0.008) was significantly associated with asthma. Some of these SNPs overlapped with those found to be associated with elevated total IgE levels and bronchial hyper-responsiveness.Conclusion This study replicates the recently published association between asthma and ADAM33 gene variants. However, most of the associated SNPs were at non-identical positions in the German, UK and US samples. As linkage disequilibrium is high among the tested SNPs, and there is no known functional polymorphism, either not-tested variants in ADAM33, unknown regulatory elements or a gene in close proximity is responsible for this association.

Notes: [Auszug] Williams syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the hemizygous deletion of 1.6 Mb on human chromosome 7q11.23. This region comprises the gene CYLN2, encoding CLIP-115, a microtubule-binding protein of 115 kD. Using a gene-targeting approach, we provide evidence that mice with ...

Notes: [Auszug] The cellular and molecular mechanisms that enable us to sense cold are not well understood. Insights into this process have come from the use of pharmacological agents, such as menthol, that elicit a cooling sensation. Here we have characterized and cloned a menthol receptor from trigeminal sensory ...

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Abstract. Introduction: To compare treatment results an international established classification is necessary. In 1997 the TNM classification of 1992 was modified. Methods: Between 1983 and 1997, 159 patients with a ductal carcinoma of the pancreas underwent resection. All data of the resected specimens were documented in standardized manner prospectively in a protocol that offered ready transfer of the collected data to a new classification. The TNM categories and stage groupings were transferred to the new UICC classification of 1997 and analyzed in comparison to the classification of 1992. Results: The inclusion of a pT4 category equivalent to the other GI tumors made a new stage grouping necessary. Also division into pN1 a and pN1 b was established. According to the clinical experience only few tumors in early stages (pT1/2 and stage I) were observed in the new classification. There was a significant improval in the patient's distribution to the new stage grouping because of the homogeneous groups. In comparison to the 1992 classification the new stage II shows a relevant prognostic value and a significant difference to stage III. Conclusion: We conclude that the new UICC classification relates to prognosis better than the old classification.
