    The Wealth Effect of Domestic Joint Ventures: Evidence from Taiwan (2002)

    Notes: This study presents important international evidence by examining the wealth effect of domestic joint ventures by Taiwanese firms. In opposite to United States evidence, we find that announcements of domestic joint ventures by Taiwanese firms are, on average, associated with significantly negative abnormal stock returns. We also find that the stock market response to announced domestic joint ventures is significantly positively related to the announcing firms’ investment opportunities, size of investment and debt ratio, and is significantly negatively related to the business relatedness variable. In contrast, free cash flow, firm size, relative firm size and managerial ownership are found to have no significant power in explaining the market response. Our results support the investment opportunities, synergy and complementarity hypotheses as well as a broad interpretation of the free cash flow hypothesis, but reject the absolute size, relative size and alignment-of-interests hypotheses. This study makes valuable contributions to the literature by providing the first direct evidence on the role of investment opportunities, synergy and alignment-of-interests in explaining the wealth effect of domestic joint ventures

    Notes: This study extends prior studies by examining how managerial ownership and external unrelated blockholdings affect the informativeness of earnings. The results are in contrast to prior studies. A non–linear relation exists between managerial ownership and earnings informativeness. Earnings informativeness increases with managerial ownership at low levels but not at higher levels of managerial ownership where the entrenchment effect sets in. Consistent with the role of large shareholder monitoring, the evidence shows a strong positive relationship between external unrelated blockholdings and earnings informativeness. These results are supported when income–increasing and absolute discretionary accruals are used to measure the extent of earnings management

    Improvement of Bacterial Blight Resistance of `Minghui 63', an Elite Restorer Line of Hybrid Rice, by Molecular Marker-Assisted Selection (2000)

    Notes: Xa21 , a broad-spectrum BB resistance gene, into Minghui 63 by molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS). A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based MAS system was established consisting of a marker that is a part of Xa21, a marker located at 0.8 centimorgans (cM) from the Xa21 locus on one side, and a marker at 3.0 cM from the gene on the other side. A total of 128 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers, evenly distributed on the 12 chromosomes, were used to recover the genetic background of Minghui 63. The resulting improved version of Minghui 63, or `Minghui 63(Xa21)', was exactly the same as the original except for a fragment of less than 3.8 cM in length surrounding the Xa21 locus. Both Minghui 63(Xa21) and its hybrid with `Zhenshan 97A' referred to as `Shanyou 63(Xa21)' showed the same spectrum of BB resistance as the donor parent. Field examination of a number of agronomic traits showed that Minghui 63(Xa21) and Shanyou 63(Xa21) were identical to Minghui 63 and Shanyou 63, when there was no disease stress. Under heavily diseased conditions, Minghui 63(Xa21) showed significantly higher grain weight and spikelet fertility than Minghui 63, and Shanyou 63(Xa21) was significantly higher than Shanyou 63 in grains per panicle, grain weight, and yield.

    Methanosarcina mazei Strain O1M9704, Methanogen with Novel Tubule Isolated from Estuarine Environment (2000)

    Notes: Abstract. A new methanogenic isolate, designated as strain O1M9704 (=OCM 667), was isolated from the sediment of the estuarine environment in Eriln Shi, Taiwan. This strain grew on trimethylamine and methanol, but it did not catabolize H2-CO2, acetate, or formate. Cells grew optimally at 37°C with 0.5% NaCl in neutral pH. The cells were stained Gram-negative, nonmotile, irregular coccus 0.3–0.6 μm in diameter. A comparison of 16S rDNA sequences phylogenetically related strain O1M9704 to Methanosarcina mazei. Gas vacuoles were observed both under phase contrast microscope and in thin sections in the electron microscope. Negative stain of electron micrographs showed a novel character of strain O1M9704 with tubule structure extended out of the cells. The tubule structure and gas vacuoles may benefit the adaptation of methanoarchaea in estuarine environment.
