    Notes: Background  Rheumatoid factor isotypes and anti-agalactosyl IgG antibodies (anti-AG IgG) have been reported to be detected and correlated with the disease activity in some collagen diseases.Objectives  To study the frequency and the clinical significance of IgM, IgG and IgA rheumatoid factor (IgM-RF, IgG-RF and IgA-RF) and anti-AG IgG in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc).Methods  Seventy-nine serum samples from patients with SSc were examined by specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.Results  The levels of IgM-, IgG-, IgA-RF and anti-AG IgG were significantly higher in SSc patients than in normal healthy controls. The levels of IgM- and IgA-RF were significantly higher in patients with diffuse cutaneous SSc than in those with limited cutaneous SSc. IgM-, IgG- and IgA-RF and anti-AG IgG were significantly elevated in 39%, 32%, 23% and 35% of 79 SSc patients, respectively. The prevalence of pulmonary fibrosis, oesophageal involvement and cutaneous telangectasias in patients with elevated IgA-RF levels was significantly higher than in those with normal levels. The incidence of pitting scars of digits in those with elevated IgG-RF levels and the incidence of contracture of phalanges in those with elevated IgM-RF levels were significantly higher than in those with normal levels. The frequency of increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate in patients with elevated IgG-RF and the frequency of increased C-reactive protein in those with elevated IgM-RF were significantly greater than in those with normal levels.Conclusions  IgM-, IgG-, IgA-RF and anti-AG IgG can be serum indicators of specific clinical manifestations in SSc patients.

    Notes: Abstract Background. We aimed to elucidate the involvement of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and sympathetic nervous system in hypertension induced by the long-term inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production. Methods. We compared the effects of 9-week treatment with an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI), cilazapril (10 mg/kg per day), to that with an α1-adrenoceptor antagonist, doxazosin (10 mg/kg per day), on systemic blood pressure and renal histological changes in Sprague-Dawley rats continuously treated with oral NG-nitro-L-arginine (L-NA). Results. L-NA induced renal damage associated with a significant fall in urinary nitrate and nitrite (NOx) excretion and a significant rise in systolic blood pressure. Although cilazapril and doxazosin restored urinary NOx to a similar level, only cilazapril treatment significantly suppressed the hypertensive effect of L-NA. Urinary protein excretion in L-NA-treated rats was also significantly reduced by cilazapril treatment. Histologically, treatment with cilazapril, but not doxazosin, significantly inhibited the glomerular injury of mesangial expansion and glomerular sclerosis induced by L-NA treatment. Furthermore, cilazapril significantly reduced urinary aldosterone level. Conclusion. Our findings indicate that the hypertension and hypertensive glomerular injury induced by long-term L-NA treatment were abrogated by an ACEI but not by an α1-adrenoceptor antagonist, and that the fall in high blood pressure induced by treatment with the ACEI was independent of urinary NOx excretion in this model.

    Notes: Abstract. The singular seesaw mechanism can naturally explain the atmospheric neutrino deficit by maximal oscillations between $\nu_{\mu_{\mathrm{L}}}$ and $\nu_{\mu_{\mathrm{R}}}$ . This mechanism can also induce three different scales of the neutrino mass squared differences, which can explain the neutrino deficits of three independent experiments (solar, atmospheric, and LSND) by neutrino oscillations. In this paper we show that realistic mixing angles among the neutrinos can be obtained by introducing a hierarchy in the Dirac neutrino mass. In the case where the Majorana neutrino mass matrix has rank 2, the solar neutrino deficit is explained by vacuum oscillations between $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\tau$ . We also consider the case where the Majorana neutrino mass matrix has rank 1. In this case, the matter enhanced Mikheyev–Smirnov–Wolfenstein solar neutrino solution is preferred as the solution of the solar neutrino deficit.
