Notes: Crystal/material quality and electrical properties of B-doped diamond films synthesized by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition were investigated. Raman spectroscopy verified the presence of diamond and indicated that the crystal quality increased with B doping. Secondary-ion mass spectroscopy showed that the B/C ratios in the films were larger than the B/C ratios in the gas phase, possibly due to differences in B and C sticking coefficients. Electrode patterns of Pt were fabricated on the films and electrical properties were investigated. On undoped diamond films with a residual B concentration of ∼5×1017 cm−3, these contacts were rectifying with small reverse leakage currents and on B-doped diamond films with a B concentration of 200 and 400 ppm, they yielded ohmic behavior. The temperature dependence of the resistivity showed that these doped films had activation energies, an order of magnitude smaller than that associated with the B impurity level in diamonds. The small activation energies associated with these heavily doped films suggest that an impurity band conduction plays an important role. Experimentally determined Hall mobility of the films was also interpreted qualitatively by an impurity band conduction mechanism and effects of grain boundaries and sp2 components on the transport properties are considered to be small for heavily doped films.

Notes: The pressure effect of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature in Tb(Al1−xCox)2, 0≤x≤0.1 was measured by the induction method under hydrostatic pressure. The Curie temperatures of these compounds increased with increasing pressure and the derivative dTc/dp as a function of cobalt concentration did not change so much compared with that of Gd(Al1−xCox)2 [Sato et al., J. Phys. (Paris) Colloq. 49, C8-453 (1988)]. These results are discussed on the basis of the RKKY model.

Notes: The radial electric field is driven to positive value by off-axis second harmonic electron cyclotron heating (ECH) in the Compact Helical System [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1988, Nice (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1989), Vol. II, p. 411]. The observed positive electric field is associated with the outward particle flux enhanced with ECH. The enhanced particle flux triggered by the production of the electrons accelerated perpendicularly to the magnetic field with ECH results in the change of the electric field.

Notes: Implementation of the designed magnetic field in the compact helical system torsatron device has been verified both experimentally and numerically. A misalignment of the outer two sets of poloidal field coils has been identified both quantitatively and qualitatively. A magnetic-field-mapping experiment has indicated that closed magnetic surfaces have been successfully achieved up to 95% of the outermost surface and that islands exist on the m=2 and 3 major rational surfaces. The experimental results and the computational analysis consistently explain that these islands are mainly caused by the ambient field resulting from magnetization of the building structure. The m=2 island width is estimated to be several millimeters during regular plasma heating experiments when the toroidal field is more than 1 T.

Notes: Visible luminescence between 2.0–3.5 eV of undoped and boron-doped diamond formed by plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition has been investigated by cathodoluminescence. Electroluminescence from Schottky diode of boron-doped semiconducting diamond has been observed for the first time and found to be due to the same luminescent center as that of cathodoluminescence. In the particles or films where the content of nitrogen and boron was greatly reduced, the cathodoluminescence peaks occurred at 2.8–2.9 eV. The characteristics of these emission spectra are very similar to those obtained in type-IIa diamond where dislocations are luminescent. The doping of boron during the deposition form another luminescent center at 2.3–2.4 eV. From the monochromatic cathodoluminescence imaging, the luminescent regions differ in the two peaks. {100} sectors are much more luminescent than {111} sectors at the signal of 2.8 eV. This phenomenon has been discussed based on the difference in defect or impurity concentration of each sector.

Notes: SUMMARY —Basic, phenolic and lactonic fractions of the fusel oils obtained from Japanese and Scotch whiskies were analyzed mainly by means of gas-liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Two picolines, three lutidines, two ethyl pyridines, α-isopropyl and 2-methyl-5-ethyl pyridines, quinoline, 2- and 6-methyl quinolines, eight pyrazines, guaiacol and its three alkyl derivatives, phenol, two ethyl phenols, o-isopropyl phenol, two cresols, 2,6-xylenol, eugenol, o-hydroxy acetophenone, 2-hydroxy-5-methyl acetophenone, γ-nonalactone, cis- and trans-3-methyl-4-hydroxy caprylic acid γ-lactone and five furan compounds were found in Japanese or Scotch whiskies. Origins of these compounds are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A naturally occurring member of ubiquinone (Q) group, a dihydroubiquinone-9 (Q-9 (H2)), has been isolated as a minor ubiquinone component from the fungus Aureobasidium pullulans. By ultraviolet absorption, mass and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometric studies, the structure of Q-9 (H2) was found to be 2,3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-IX-dihydromultiprenyl9-1,4-benzoquinone (I).

Notes: Abstract A rapid-frequency-scan dye laser was developed for the measurement of the velocity-distribution functions of impurity atoms sputtered due to the high-temperature plasma-surface interaction. In order to confirm the effectiveness of this rapid-scan technique, measurements of the Doppler profiles of Fe atoms sputtered by Ar ion-beam bombardment with energy 3 keV were performed. A scanning range of more than 40 pm at λ ≈300 nm was obtained with a spectral bandwidth of 1.5 ∼2 pm and good linearity. Doppler profiles were determined in various scattering conditions, and excellent performance of this technique was demonstrated. The distortion error caused by line saturation was analytically discussed, and it is shown that the effect of this error is not so serious (less than 10%) even for highly saturated excitation.

Notes: Abstract Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity was investigated in 38 isolants ofCladosporium carrionii in Africa (3 isolants), Australia (10), China (15) and Venezuela (10).C. carrionii was classified into 4 mtDNA types (Type I to Type IV) based on the restriction patterns withMspI,Sau3AI andHaeIII. All the 15 strains in China and 9 of 10 strains in Venezuela showed Type I, while all the 10 strains in Australia showed Type II. These results suggested a correlation between the mtDNA types and geographic origin.
