Notes: Summary Gastrointestinal motility disorders induced by diabetes mellitus are most commonly manifested in the colon, and are considered to be an expression of diabetic autonomic polyneuropathy. In this study, for the first time, the intrinsic nervous system of the bowel has been subjected to an ultrastructural and morphometric examination in rectal biopsy material obtained from diabetics with and without diabetic enteropathy. In patients with diabetic enteropathy, the nerves of the submucous plexus (Meissner's plexus) revealed significant swelling of the axons, as an expression of neural degeneration. Furthermore, in about a half of these patients, thickening of the basal membrane of Schwann's cells was also detected. Additional, although unspecific, changes found in the diabetics were a quantitative increase in the lysosomes, lipofuscin and glycogen in the Schwann cells. The ultrastructural findings represent evidence for the presence of an intrinsic autonomic polyneuropathy in diabetics with diabetic enteropathy. At the same time, they indicate that the diagnosis of diabetic enteropathy is no longer merely an “exclusion” diagnosis.

Notes: Abstract Optimal regimen for insulin therapy should lead to normal longitudinal growth and weight gain in children with diabetes mellitus. However, reports published so far indicate that this goal of paediatric diabetology is currently not achieved in a considerable number of patients. In a cross-sectional sample of 89 children with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) for more than 3 years, we found the relation of height to weight to be significantly different compared to 102 healthy school children of similar age. Using bivariate analysis, body shape in these children with diabetes was shifted towards small and obese (P〈0.05) compared to control children. We subsequently initiated a longitudinal study and followed children from the onset of diabetes for the following 3 years, recording height, weight and bone age as well as glycosylated haemoglobin and daily insulin requirement. At diagnosis, height SDS was identical in children with IDDM (+0.04±0.10) compared to control children (−0.07±0.10; M±SE), while weight SDS was −0.26±0.10 in children with diabetes (controls: +0.01±0.1). Bone age was identically retarded in newly diagnosed IDDM children (−0.73±0.12 SDS) and in our control group of children from the same regional background (−0.50±0.12; n.s.). In this group of children with diabetes mellitus followed prospectively, height to weight relationship differed from controls after 2 and after 3 years of the disease (P〈0.05). At 2 years, body size in children with diabetes was shifted towards taller and heavier compared to controls, while at 3 years, the relation of height to weight was even more abnormal with increased obesity but a reduction of standardized height. This is the same relation encountered in the cross-sectional sample of children with a duration of diabetes beyond 3 years. These data demonstrate that even modern insulin therapy does not guarantee normal development of height and weight in children with IDDM.

Notes: Deactivation Behaviour of Arenes and Heteroarenes. XXXVI. The Solvent and Temperature Dependence of Deactivation Behaviour of 9, 9′-Bis(acridizinium-yl) at High ConcentrationAt room temperature the geometrical structure of the fluoresceing singlet state of 9, 9′-bis(acridizinium-yl) is determined by the solvent. In solvents of the type A (water, methanol, acetonitril) a plain S1-state emits, in the case of the solvent type B (ethanol, propanol-(2)) the S1-state is twisted. Both excited states have different emission spectroscopical properties. At high concentration (c ≥ 10-4 mol l-1) in the case of the solvent type B a new emission band is observed, and the monomer emission is quenched. This new band is interpreted as a fluorescence from a molecular associate in the excited state. The intensity of this associate band is increasing with decreasing temperature. It is shown that this band is the result of molecular association in the ground state. From the photochemical irradiation it follows that only in the case of the solvent type B a photocycloaddition is possible. The plain S1-state does not react.

Notes: On Surface Compounds of Transition Metals. XL. Characterization of Chromium Doped Silica Catalyst Systems of the Phillips Type by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Analysing System (SEM/EDS)The surface of typical supports for the Phillips catalyst was studied by SEM. The seemingly smooth surfaces are composed by closely packed, ball-shaped substructures; macro- and micro-pores can be seen. Adherent particles on the surface (φ ≪ 1 μm) show the same substructures as the usual surface. After impregnation and activation/reduction of the catalysts crystallites are seen at the surface, which are characterized as Cr2O3 by their crystal shape and EDS analysis.Polymerization of ethylene occurs at the usually doped surface, while the Cr2O3 particles do not exhibit a special activity. Mechanically inforced breaks of the catalyst grains show the formation of threadlike polyethylene with diameters of 200 to 300 nm.

Notes: Reactions of Difluoridichloromethane with HydrocarbonsThe reaction of difluordichloromethane with different hydrocarbons between 150°C and 250°C yields the CFCl2-substituted hydrocarbons. Beside it the corresponding chlorides are formed. For the hydrocarbons studied the following sequence of reactivity against difluordichloro-methane was found. n-paraffins 〈 isoparaffins ≅ cycloparaffins 〈 alkylaromatics 〈 olefines.
