Notes: A two-stage electron cyclotron resonance source with a superconducting magnet system and a microwave frequency of 14.4 GHz for both plasma stages is in operation at the Jülich cyclotron since 1986. After same upgrading of the first plasma stage it can produce more than 1 μA of fully stripped Ne, 0.8 μ of 40Ar16+ and of 84Kr25+ ions in continuous wave operation.

Notes: Abstract Previous studies have suggested that virulence of pathogenic Yersiniae is associated with a suppression of the local cytokine response. In this context, the plasmid-encoded 41-kDa Yersinia outer protein B (YopB) has been implicated with the lack of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression in Peyer's patches (PP), following oral infection of mice with the enteropathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica. The present study was performed to further evaluate the relationships between YopB-induced suppression of TNF-α and bacterial survival in host tissue. Results are presented to show the ability of purified YopB to suppress the release of TNF-α by macrophages, the effect of which was neutralized by monospecific anti-YopB antiserum. In mice orally infected with Y. enterocolitica, anti-YopB treatment on days 3 and 5 postinfection, significantly decreased the recovery of live bacteria from PP. This observation correlated with a strong increase in TNF-α expression, as determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and measuring the levels of TNF activity in homogenates of PP. Moreover, treatment of mice with a combination of anti-YopB and anti-TNF-α antiserum, completely abrogated the beneficial effect of the anti-YopB antiserum. In controls, expression of other proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 remained unaffected by either treatment. Therefore, the results indicate that endogenous TNF-α is required for eradication of Y. enterocolitica from host tissue, and further imply that YopB significantly contributes to suppression of the local TNF-α response in PP.

Notes: Abstract High-spin states in156Er have been populated using the (α, 8n) and (16O, 4n) reactions. In the ground state band a strong backbending effect was observed atI π=12+. Four states of a secondK=0 band with spins 9, 11, 13 and 15 were found. This second band depopulates completely into the 8+ and 10+ members of the ground state band. This is explained by the fact that the upper states of this second band are yrast states and that this band crosses the (gsb)-line atI ≃11.

Notes: Abstract The decay191Hg→191Au was investigated by measuring γ-ray spectra, conversion electron spectra, and coincidence spectra, as well as lifetimes in the second region. The parent isotope191Hg was produced by the reaction197Au (d, 8n) withE d =80 MeV. About 80 γ-transitions of this decay were observed. Multipolarities of the more intense transitions were determined. An isomeric state of 0.92±0.11 s half-life was found in191Au. A level scheme for191Au is suggested. The measured γ-transitions are attributed to the decay of a 13/2+ isomeric state of191Hg; its half-life was found to be 50.8 ±1.5 min. The core excitation model was used to discuss some features of the level structure in191Au.

Notes: Abstract Ground state rotational bands in the deformed doubly-even rare earth nuclei158,160Er,164,166Yb, and168Hf have been observed in (α, 8n γ) reactions. The γ-spectra associated with these reactions were studied in-beam using conventional spectroscopic methods. In all five nuclei the nuclear moment of inertia of the ground state rotational states was found to increase abruptly as higher spin states were attained. In a plot of the moment of inertia as a function of the angular velocity all these five nuclei display “backbending” curves. Moreover, in158Er and166Yb, the curves after passing through a maximum bend subsequently downwards.

Notes: Abstract From a study of theγ-decay of high-spin states populated using the (α, 8n) reaction, the ground-state rotational band in182Os has been established up to spin 20+. A plot of the moment of inertia as a function of the square of the rotational frequency for this ground-state band results in a back-and-forwardbending curve, indicating that an explanation in terms of pure Coriolis decoupling in thei 13/2 neutron orbital requires revision. The moment of inertia reaches a maximum of only 74% of the rigid rotor value.
