Notes: Cutaneous plasmacytosis is a rare disorder without systemic plasma cell proliferation in organs other than the skin, with a possible malignant transformation. However, there are few effective therapies available. It has been reported that interleukin-6 (IL-6), which is a cytokine inducing B-cell differentiation to immunoglobulin-producing cells, plays a part in systemic plasmacytosis. In this study, we performed intralesional steroid therapy in the lesions of cutaneous plasmacytosis in three patients, which resulted in sufficient clinical effects. We demonstrated that before treatment, plasma IL-6 levels were significantly elevated in all the patients, and that levels were reduced in parallel with the clinical improvement after therapy. Immunohistochemistry revealed IL-6 protein expression on tumour cells in the lesional skin. Reverse transcription—polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) detected IL-6 mRNA in the lesional skin in all cases, levels of which were decreased after the effective intralesional steroid therapy, but which were unchanged after ineffective topical photochemotherapy (PUVA). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from the patients produced significantly large quantities of IL-6 which were reduced by addition of steroid in vitro. These results suggest that the generation of IL-6 plays the key role in cutaneous plasmacytosis and that intralesional steroid therapy is effective in reducing the production of IL-6 in this disorder.

Notes: To determine the involvement of proteinases with hydrolytic activity towards extracellular matrix and basement membrane, in invasion and metastasis of tumour cells, the expression of cathepsin D, an aspartic proteinase, and cathepsin B, a cysteine proteinase, was studied. Formalin-fixed paraffinembedded specimens from 13 patients who had squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) with local recurrence, skin and/or lymph node metastasis were examined. Cathepsin D stained intensely as a granular pattern (mature enzyme) in tumour cells of 69% of primary lesions and all the secondary lesions of the patients with SCC. Cathepsin B stained more intensely in SCC cells of all of the primary and secondary lesions than in normal epidermis: staining patterns were almost diffuse (procathepsin B). Granular and diffuse patterns (mature enzyme of cathepsin D and procathepsin B, respectively) appeared in the outer and inner parts of tumour islands, respectively. The presence of the active mature form of cathepsin D and procathepsin B in metastatic skin lesions of SCC was confirmed by Western blotting analysis. The presence and localization of the active mature form of cathepsin D suggests that activated cathepsin D may be involved in the invasion and metastasis of SCC.

Notes: Generation of extra facets on ridge-type triangles with (001)-, (110)-, and (201)-related equivalent slopes on GaAs (111) A substrates and stripes running in the [1¯10], [110], and [100] directions on (001) substrates during molecular beam epitaxy of GaAs/AlGaAs multilayers was investigated. By investigating local variation in layer thickness in the regions adjacent to extra (114)A, (110), and (1¯1¯1¯)B facets common to the (111)A and (001) patterned substrates and extra facets specific to the respective substrates and growth rates of the facets relative to the growth rate on the substrate plane, the orientation-dependent Ga surface diffusion length, λGa, was elucidated as λGa(001)(approximate)λGa(1¯1¯3¯)B〈{λGa(1¯1¯1 ¯)B,λGa(3¯3¯1¯)B,λGa(013),λGa(113)A}〈λGa(159)(approximate)λGa(114)A(approximate)λGa(111)A〈λGa(110). That is, λGa increases in the order of the (001), (1¯1¯1¯)B-related, (111)A-related, and (110) surfaces.

Notes: The Hf-added FeRuGaSi alloy film has an amorphous structure in the as-deposited state and becomes nanocrystalline after annealing. Due to this structure change from crystalline to amorphous by the addition of Hf, soft magnetic degradation of the film deposited on the slant grooved substrate, which is necessary for the sophisticated embedded thin film (ETF) head structure, is greatly suppressed and the undesirable film stress is relieved. The FeRuGaSi-Hf alloy film has higher resistivity and permeability at high frequencies than those of sendust film, and the read/write characteristics of this alloy film show better performance than sendust film. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: By using an epitaxial growth technique, Co73Cr15Pt12(112¯0) bi-crystalline thin films formed on Cr–Tix(001)[x=0–15 at. %] single crystalline underlayers were prepared to investigate the relationship between the magnetic properties and the lattice distortion in the magnetic layer. X-ray diffraction measurement shows that the best lattice matching between the c axis of the CoCrPt and the [110] direction of the Cr–Ti underlayer is realized and the CoCrPt layer shows an ideal symmetrical hcp. structure when the Ti concentration is 10 at. %, where the maximum magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy and coercivity values are observed. Distortion in the hcp. CoCrPt magnetic crystal grains decreases the uniaxial magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy, thus lowering the attainable medium coercivity. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Large shielding factors obtained by magnetic shaking techniques are reported. A cylindrical magnetic shield with both ends open (length=120 cm, inner diameter=52 cm) was constructed as a one-half model of an actual size. Metglas 2705M amorphous tapes of 5 cm in width and about 22 μm in thickness were wound helically on the outer surface of a tube (outer diameter=52 cm) to form a thin multiple-shell structure of five shells. The outer three shells, each made of 4 layers of tapes, were subjected to a common magnetic shaking (200 Hz). The fourth shell made of 8 layers was subjected to a different magnetic shaking (536 Hz). The innermost one was a passive shell. The shielding factor in the center of the shield measured for a transversely applied magnetic field (100 mG) showed 1/f-like behavior and extremely large values of 90 900 at 1 Hz and 21 000 at 10 Hz when the opening compensation was on. The shielding factor was much lower and constant at the level of 7000 at frequencies of less than 10 Hz when opening compensation was off. The residual dc magnetic field at the center was as small as 5 μG. It is shown by the experiments that a multiple-shell structure with even narrow spacings exhibits large shielding factors when a magnetic shaking technique is applied. It is also shown that the opening compensation technique is a key to building an open-structure magnetic shield with a large shielding factor. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the influence of α-Fe content on the magnetic properties of (Sm, Zr)Fe7Nx+α-Fe nanocomposite permanent magnet materials. As α-Fe content increases, the saturation magnetization and the remanence increase while the coercivity decreases monotonously. Also we confirmed the influence of microstructure on magnetic properties. Uniform and fine grain sizes of around 20 nm realized high remanence and high squareness of demagnetizing curve such as Br=9.9 kG, HcJ=9.1 kOe, Hk/HcJ=29.9%, and (BH)max=17.8 MGOe. These experimental results agree well with micromagnetic calculations by other researchers. Compaction-molded bonded magnet was prepared by magnetic powders with magnetic properties of Br=9.9 kG, HcJ=8.2 kOe, (BH)max=17.5 MGOe and 2 wt% of epoxy resin. Bonded magnet with a density of 5.91 g/cm3 showed high magnetic properties as follows: Br=7.6 kG, HcJ=8.4 kOe, and (BH)max=12.0 MGOe. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetic properties and microstructures of rapidly quenched Sm–Fe–N powders with low Sm contents and Zr and Co addition have been studied. High remanence values of 9.4 kG with high HcJ values of 7–10 kOe were obtained for isotropic powders. The x-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed these alloy powders to consist of a nanoscale mixture with a SmFe7Nx phase with the TbCu7-type structure and α-Fe in the size range of 20–30 nm. It is presumed that the high remanence is due to the small crystal size and exchange coupling at interphase boundaries. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of Se-doped Ga0.5In0.5P/(Al0.5Ga0.5)0.5In0.5P double heterostructure (DH) on GaAs substrates were investigated at room temperature. The PL intensity and the decay time both strongly depend on the cladding-layer carrier density. Up to a carrier density of 2.5×1017 cm−3, the PL intensity increases linearly with carrier density, while the decay time is almost constant. For carrier densities larger than 2.5×1017 cm−3, the PL intensity and the decay time decrease linearly and quadratically with carrier density, respectively. We also studied the PL characteristics of Se-doped Ga0.5In0.5P and (Al0.5Ga0.5)0.5In0.5P single layers on GaAs substrates. We found that the carrier density dependence of DH governed by the cladding layer is similar to that of (Al0.5Ga0.5)0.5In0.5P single layers. These results indicate that a nonradiative interfacial recombination process dictates the DH PL characteristics and that the quality of the cladding layer affects the PL radiative efficiency. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
