Notes: The dimerization equilibrium of 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane in carbon dioxide was studied in a wide range of solvent density from 200 to 1100 kg m−3 at 25.0 and 35.0 °C. We found an inversion of the density dependence of the equilibrium constant. The configurational volume change for the dimerization has a large positive value in the medium density region, although it is negative in the high density region as usually observed for the bond formation reactions in the liquid state. This anomaly is reproduced by the cavity distribution function calculated from the integral equation based on the HNC or PY approximation for the Lennard-Jones fluid model. The large positive value in the medium density region is interpreted in terms of desolvation effect due to the dimerization. The long-range correlation between molecules due to attractive forces is suggested to play an important role in determining the reaction volume in the medium density region.

Notes: We studied the dimerization equilibrium of 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane in argon at 25.0 °C from about 500 to 1200 kg m−3. It is clarified that in the simplest solvent, argon, there exists a definite difference in the density dependence of the equilibrium constant between the high and medium density regions. In the high density region, the equilibrium constant shows a sizable increase with the solvent density as in the liquid phase. Near the critical density, however, the equilibrium constant shows little density dependence.

Notes: The electron spin resonance studies have been carried out in the temperature range 130–300 K on semiconducting β-FeSi2 single crystals grown by a chemical vapor transport technique. Two anisotropic doublets with apparent g factors in the range 2.025–2.05 and 1.98–2.03, as well as one complex signal having an isotropic g factor of 2.0195 and exhibiting a five-line hyperfine structure, have been detected. The doublet signals are believed to arise from spin triplet (S=1) states of, presumably, substitutional Ni2+ transition ions, whereas the signal exhibiting the hyperfine structure has been attributed to the spin of a hole, captured by silicon vacancy and interacting with nuclear spins of four iron atoms in the first shell surrounding of the silicon vacancy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Temperature and magnetic field dependence of the critical current density Jc and magnetization of the polycrystalline high Tc oxide superconductor YBa2Cu3Oy have been measured. At low temperature, Jc shows a different temperature dependence between field cooling and zero-field cooling, that is, the Jc value measured when the sample was cooled in a fixed magnetic field was larger than that measured when the sample was cooled in zero magnetic field and then a magnetic field was applied. This irreversible behavior of Jc disappeared at a reduced temperature difference 1–t proportional to H2/3 (H is the magnetic field). Moreover, we have observed that the slope dV/dJ just above Jc began to increase rapidly with increasing temperature above 70 K. These experimental results can be attributed to the effects of grain boundaries.

Notes: Chemical-vapor-deposited Nb3Ge tapes 2.5 mm wide with Nb3Ge layer thickness of 5–60 μm were prepared under various processing conditions. Though the depth profile of the Nb concentration in the Nb3Ge tapes determined by x-ray microanalysis was fairly uniform, with a variation less than 4 at. % for many Nb3Ge tapes, the distribution of the Nb concentration over the whole cross section of the Nb3Ge layer varied considerably, with a variation of 10–18 at. % for various Nb3Ge tapes. In this distribution, Nb concentrations at the tape edges were found to be higher than those on its sides for all of the Nb3Ge tapes prepared. The origin of this singular distribution of the composition is discussed. The Tc values for narrower tapes cut out lengthwise from the 2.5-mm-wide tapes were measured resistively. They correlated closely with the compositional distribution in the cross section of the Nb3Ge tapes. The Tc values (midpoints) of Nb3Ge tapes incorporating compositions within the Nb concentration range of 70–75 at. % were found to be near or above 20 K.

Notes: Stainless-steel and Mo sheathed PbMo6 S8 wires have been fabricated by hot working from modified PbS, Mo, and MoS2 mixed powders which were prepared by reacting Pb, Mo, and S at 530 °C. Critical current densities were investigated for different preparation conditions, and it is revealed that obtaining continuous current path between PbMo6 S8 grains is the most important factor to achieve high critical current density. The Jc value of 2.8×104 A/cm2 (8 T), 7.8×103 A/cm2 (15 T), and 1.3×103 A/cm2 (23 T) was observed for the PbMo6 S7.0 wire heat treated at 700 °C.

Notes: The structures and the thermodynamic properties of a fluid composed of a nonpolar or a polar dumbbell molecule have been studied from the gaslike to the liquidlike density regions based on two types of the reference interaction site model (RISM) integral equation theories (RISM-1 and RISM-2). This is the first application of the RISM-2 theory to a polar dumbbell fluid. We have proven that the RISM-2 theory with the hypernetted-chain (HNC) approximation has an inconsistency with respect to the zeroth-order relation between site–site total correlation functions and site–site direct correlation functions in the Fourier space. An hypothetical bridge function is introduced to remedy this inconsistency, which works well to give good information on the structure and the dielectric constant in the lower-density region. On the other hand, the RISM-1 theory works well in the higher-density region, but not well in the lower-density region. Complemental application of these theories, that is, the RISM-1 theory for the high-density region and the RISM-2 theory for the low-density region, allows us to understand the properties of fluid over wide density regions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract— The purposes of the study were to observe the morphological changes on root canal walls after instrumentation and irrigation, and assess the efficacy of conventional cleansing procedures and the effectiveness of Er:YAG laser in removing debris and smear layer from the root canal walls. Thirty-six endodontically treated human mandibular incisor teeth with single root canals were bisected longitudinally and divided into three groups of 12 teeth. Group 1 (Gl) was left unlased as a control. The teeth of group 2 (G2) and group 3 (G3) were irradiated by Er:YAG laser (laser parameters were set at 1 W, 100 mJ/pulse and 10 Hz) for 3 s and 5 s. The teeth were prepared for scanning electron microscope study. Control specimens showed debris and heavy smear layer obscuring the dentinal tubules at all levels in the canals. The root canal walls irradiated by Er:YAG laser were free of debris, with an evaporated smear layer and open dentinal tubules. These results suggested that Er:YAG laser irradiation had an efficient cleaning effect on the prepared root canal walls.

Notes: We found that the Raman–Stokes shift of the C(Double Bond)N stretching mode of Phenol Blue changes with excitation energy; the frequency of this Raman band increased with an increase of the excitation energy, whereas the bandwidth was almost the same. The origin of the excitation energy dependence is discussed in connection with the correlation of the effect of the solvent fluctuation on the electronic transition energy and the vibrational frequency. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
