Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of the selective benzodiazepine antagonist Ro 15-1788 has been studied in 6 healthy male volunteers following a single intravenous dose of 2.5 mg. The drug was only slightly bound to plasma proteins (40±8%, mean±SD). A negligible amount (〈0.2% of the dose) of unchanged drug was recovered in urine. Hepatic elimination was rapid, as shown by a short t1/2 of 0.9±0.2 h, and high total plasma and blood clearances of 691±216 ml/min and 716±199 ml/min, respectively. The fast decline of plasma levels from about 60 to 2 ng/ml accounts for the short-lasting reversal of benzodiazepine-induced sedation by Ro 15-1788.

Abstract: Summary The action of lead on the intermediary metabolism, especially on the synthesis of heme, the red blood cell pigment, is well documented. Therefore biological monitoring of lead exposed persons by means of the urinary metabolites of porphyrin metabolism is very valuable. Biological monitoring through the urinary metabolite — aminolevulinic acid (ALAU) has been put to extensive use for over ten years by the Swiss National Accident Insurance Fund (Suva). At present there are over 3000 workers in 100 factories which are periodically screened for this metabolite. Urinary analyses are carried out at regular intervals of 2, 4 or 6 months according to the lead exposition with additional medical examinations once or twice a year. Due to biological monitoring, technical improvements and personal hygiene there have been no further lead poisoning recently in industrial plants supervised by Suva.

Notes: Based on the correlation of some essential microstructural parameters and various mechanical, thermal and thermo-mechanical properties of hot-pressed and reaction-bonded silicon nitride, the demand for further improving the properties of silicon nitride and for developing a more economical fabrication of silicon nitride by applying new processing techniques is indicated. Aspects and problem areas of various new techniques, such as sintering of Si3N4-powder compacts and post-sintering of reaction-bonded silicon nitride as well as the various routes of hot-isostatic pressing, are discussed. The paper is divided into two parts:Part I: Microstructural effects on mechanical, thermal and thermomechanical properties of silicon nitride.Part II: New processing techniques of silicon nitride. In part I the relationship between microstructure and various mechanical, thermal and thermo-mechanical properties of hot-pressed and reaction-bonded silicon nitride, such as fracture strength, thermal diffusivity and thermal shock resistance, is discussed. On the basis of this correlation today's limits of silicon nitride regarding a broader application, and the possibilities for optimizing this material group are outlined. This discussion demonstrates the necessity of further improving some important properties and of developing new processing techniques. In part II the development lines of these new techniques for silicon nitride processing are discussed and a survey is given of recent progresses in the use of those techniques. As an example of a new processing technique, results of hot-isostatic pressing of reaction-bonded silicon nitride are presented in more detail.

Notes: The goal of this investigation was to optimize the synthesis of silazane-based polymers for processing fibre-reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Liquid oligomeric silazanes were synthesized by ammonolysis of chlorosilanes and characterized spectroscopi- cally (FTIR, NMR) as well as by elemental analysis. The silazanes were obtained in high yield and purity. Different functional groups (system S1: Si - H, Si - CH3, Si - CH=CH2) and different degrees of branching in the Si - N backbone [system S2; Si(NH)3, Si(NH)2] were realized in order to study the properties of the silazanes that are dependent on the molecular structure. For processing ceramics via pyrolysis of pre-ceramic oligomers, molecular weight, rheological behaviour, thermosetting and ceramic yield were investigated systematically and correlated with the molecular structure of the silazanes. Low molecular weights (500-1000 g mol-1) as well as low viscosity values (0.1-20 Pa s) enable processing of the silazanes in the liquid phase without any solvent. Due to the latent reactivity of the functional groups, curing of the polymers via hydrosilylation is achieved.Structural changes and weight loss during polymer curing as well as the organic/inorganic transition were monitored by FTIR spectroscopy and differential thermogravimetric analysis. With increasing temperature (room temperature to 800 °C) the hydrogen content decreases from 7 to 〈 0.5 wt% due to the formation of gaseous molecules (NH3, CH4, H2). High ceramic yields up to 80% were reached by branching the oligomers, thus reducing the amount of volatile precursor fragments.Up to 1300 °C, ceramic materials remained amorphous to X-rays. At higher temperatures (1400-1800 °C) either SiC or SiC/Si3N4 composites were selectively crystallized, depending on the pyrolysis conditions. The utility of the optimized precursors for CMCs has been demonstrated by infiltration of fibre preforms and subsequent pyrolysis. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
