Notes: Abstract. To determine if intestinal stromal cells secrete diffusible factors such as insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) capable of regulating epithelial cell growth in vitro, stromal cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion of rat intestine. Incorporation of [3H]thymidine into DNA and [14C]leucine into protein of IEC-6 cells, a model intestinal epithelial cell line, was significantly increased (two- to threefold) when the IEC-6 cells were co-cultured with stromal cells, relative to IEC-6 cells grown alone. Medium conditioned by stromal cells stimulated DNA synthesis of IEC-6 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Analysis of the conditioned medium revealed that intestinal stromal cells secreted IGF-I, but little IGF-II, in addition to an M r 32,000 IGF-binding protein (IGFBP-2) and an IGFBP having M r∼ 24,000. We conclude that rat intestinal stromal cells secrete one or more diffusible factors, which may include IGF-I and IGFBPs, capable of stimulating proliferation of IEC-6 cells in vitro.

Notes: 3 crystal were investigated. At room temperature under picosecond excitation efficient high-order stimulated Raman scattering in the visible and near-IR regions was observed. A total conversion efficiency of the 1-μm Nd3+:Y3Al5O12 laser-pump emission to Stokes and anti-Stokes lines of about 70% was estimated. All registered scattered laser components were identified. We classify the NaClO3 single crystal as a promising χ(3) medium for Raman lasers.

Notes: Abstract A retrospective review was undertaken of 169 patients admitted to an Intensive Therapy Unit with a major chest injury to determine the incidence, clinical features and outcome of patients with myocardial contusion. This injury occurred in 29 (17%) patients, of whom 24 (83%) had significant cardiovascular complications and five died as a direct result of the injury. The interval between injury and diagnosis was 3.2±2.3 days (mean±SD) from injury and in six patients the diagnosis was made only at necropsy. Increased awarenness of myocardial contusion is required for earlier diagnosis and prevention of complications.
