Notes: A number of commercially available digital correlators is discussed with respect to algorithms, systematic errors, and statistical errors. Special attention has been paid to the determination of an influence of the temporal integration of measured signals on autocorrelation functions measured in digital correlators. A calculation of the standard deviation for statistical errors in correlation estimators has been performed. The result is compared with the experiment. Favorable noise properties of the multiple-tau correlator which have been reported in the literature are not confirmed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A scanning electron microscope with cryogenic sample holder has been employed for spatially resolved excitation of carriers. A point contact at a fixed position on the sample surface opposing the area scanned by the electron beam serves as a local current probe. Ballistic propagation and focusing of electron beam excited carriers is observed in single crystalline high purity samples of bismuth and tungsten over distances of typically 100 μm. Signal contributions from diffusive carrier flow as well as ballistic phonons are observed in addition to the ballistic electron signals. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A focusing transducer based on a 9-µm thick PVDF foil was fabricated and tested for performance. The transducer operates in the frequency range of 20–160 MHz. For operation at 78 MHz in water, a lateral resolution of 27.5 µm and a vertical resolution of 35 µm have been observed. Acoustic images of a transistor have been obtained with the focusing PVDF transducer.

Notes: Abstract The theories for the rotational Brownian motion of molecules in liquids were experimentally verified on the example of selected fluorescent probe molecules dissolved in various solvents. Agreement between theories and experimental results as well as some disagreements between them were found. The model of a “coloured noise” random torque has been employed to diminish the discrepancy between the Hubbard-Morita model of rotational Brownian motion of molecules in liquids and the experimental data. A “mass drag” effect due to the existence of viscosity shear waves is taken into account in the explanation of inertial effects in molecular motion in liquids. The hypothesis of microviscosity has been confirmed in some experimental situations.

Notes: Summary We have performed bilio-biliary end-to-end anastomosis 40 times in 37 of the 75 patients referred to us during 9 years for iatrogenic lesions of the extrahepatic biliary tract. In 3 patients our anastomosis was restenosed after removal of the T-drain. With proper mobilisation, defects of the hepatocholedochus up to 4 cm long can be bridged. Follow-up examinations showed excellent results in over 80%. Successful end-to-end anastomosis is decidedly superior to all other correction measures. An operative technique of our own for extensive defects in the region of the hepatic hilus is given.

Notes: Summary Obstructive jaundice is a sign of serious disease; it is based on multifactorial events. Early diagnosis, which is of vital importance to successful treatment, is often impossible since in most of the cases there are only nonspecific prodromal symptoms. The only treatment promising success is the curative operation. In benign obstruction this means early sanitation, and in malignant obstruction eradication of the tumor.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der maligne Verschluß-Ikterus ist ausnahmslos eine lebensbedrohliche Erkrankung.
Notes: Summary Malignant obstructive jaundice is invariably a disease endangering life. Since there are no prodromal symptoms, nearly one-fourth of the patients are primarily inoperable when seen, and in one-fifth is the tumor resectable. Even in operable cases success is moderate; the highest and longest rates of survival can be achieved with papillary carcinoma. A substantial chance lies in the decisive improvement and shortening of preoperative diagnostics.

Notes: Summary Iatrogenic lesions of the hepatocholedochus are among the most serious complications of upper abdominal surgery. They present the surgeon with difficult problems: unsuccessful attempts to reconstruct easily lead to irreparable liver damage and situations which can no longer be controlled surgically. Consequently, the corrective operation decides the fate of the patient. Contrary to general opinion, we attempt the ideal bilibiliary end-to end anastomosis over the large T-drain after mobilization of the stump of the biliary tract even in larger defects. With proper mobilization, even defects of the hepatocholedochus up to 4 cm long can be bridged. Naturally, preparation of the distal limb of the bile duct requires adequate surgical experience. We have performed 40 bilibiliary end-to-end anastomoses in 37 patients. Examination and follow-up examinations showed, apart from one death and three reoccurrences of stenosis, satisfactory results in every respect: The successful bilibiliary end-to-end anastomosis is superior to all other corrective measures.
