Notes: (110) oriented La1−δMn1−δO3 thin films with different oxygen content were grown on (001) LaAlO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Samples prepared in higher oxygen partial pressures show a ferromagnetic transition around 200 K. The transport is thermally activated with a change in slope at the ferromagnetic transition. Samples prepared and annealed in vacuum show signatures of mixed ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, and are insulators. The pure antiferromagnetic phase (as expected and observed in bulk materials with optimum oxygen stoichiometry) was not obtained in our experiments, even in the strongly reduced films. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The recombination characteristics of the Nd–Fe–B-type isotropic and anisotropic hydrogenation, desorption, disproportionation, recombination (HDDR) alloys were investigated using three types of alloys: alloy A (Nd12.6Fe81.4B6), alloy B (Nd12.6Fe81.3B6Zr0.1), and alloy C (Nd12.6Fe68.8Co11.5B6Ga1.0Zr0.1). Alloy A is featured with the isotropic HDDR character, while alloys B and C are featured with the anisotropic HDDR character. Recombination characteristics of the alloys were examined by observing the coercivity variation as a function of recombination time. Microstructural development during the HDDR was examined by means of transmission electron microscopy, and it was correlated with the coercivity variation. The present study revealed that the intrinsic coercivities of the recombined materials rapidly increased with increasing the recombination time and then showed a peak, after which the coercivities decreased gradually as usual. However, it has been found that the degraded coercivity was recovered significantly on prolonged recombination. Compared with the isotropic HDDR alloy A, the anisotropic HDDR alloys B and C are notable for their greater recovery of coercivity. The significant recovery of coercivity was accounted for in terms of the development of a well-defined smooth grain boundary between the recombined grains on prolonged recombination. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The voltage modulation depths, ΔV of high-Tc direct current superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) with resistors connected in parallel with their inductances were investigated. Both the junctions and resistors in the SQUIDs were fabricated using focused electron-beam irradiation. The effect of varying the resistor value (using focused ion-beam trimming) and the screening parameter βL (by varying the temperature and hence the junction critical current) were studied. Significant enhancement of ΔV relative to an equivalent unshunted SQUID for βL values up to 50 was observed, and the most effective shunt resistor value was found to be approximately equal to the junction resistance. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  Recent sediment accumulation rates are 18–230 mg cm-2 yr-1 (0.02–0.2 cm yr-1) based on excess 210Pb activity profiles in the southwestern part of the East Sea (Sea of Japan). Assuming no mixing beneath surface mixed layers, 210Pb-derived sediment accumulation rates are 18–32 mg cm-2 yr-1 in the northern part of the Yamato Ridge and the Ulleung Basin, 29–136 mg cm-2 yr-1 in the Korea Plateau, and 230 mg cm-2 yr-1 in the southern shelf. These values generally agree with long-term sedimentation rates estimated from dated ash layers.

Notes: Abstract The Apolipoprotein E4 allele (Apo-ε4) is the major susceptibility gene for late onset Alzheimer Disease (AD) but epidemiological data suggest that the effect of this allele is modified in different individuals by genetic or environmental factors. Age and head injury are major non-genetic factors modifying the Apo-ε4 risk. There is conflicting data as to whether alleles of other chaperon proteins (such as alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (ACT)) or Apo-ε4 receptors (such as the VDRL receptor) modify the Apo-ε4 risk for AD. We analyze problems posed by genetic association studies including those of multiple comparisons and selection of controls, the latter problem exacerbated by the wide variations in Apolipoprotein E allele frequencies observed in different groups and localities.

Notes: Abstract Purpose A noncontact holmium:yttrium scandium gallium garnet (Ho:YSGG) laser system has been designed and tested for the micromanipulation of mammalian embryos. The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to determine the effectiveness of this laser for assisted hatching and evaluate its impact on embryo viability. The Ho:YSGG system, utilizing 250-μsec pulses at a wave-length of 2.1 μm and 4 Hz, was used to remove a portion of the zona pellucida (ZP) of two-to four-cell FVB mouse embryos. Results In the first experiment there was no difference in blastocyst production or hatching rates following laser or conventional assisted hatching (LAH or AH, respectively) in contrast to control embryos cultured in a 5% CO2 humidified air incubator at 37°C. In the second experiment a blastocyst antihatching culture model was employed and LAH-treated embryos were cultured in a serum-free HTF medium (HTF-o). Blastocyst formation was not influenced by LAH treatment and hatching was increased (P 〈 0.01) from 4 to 60% compared to HTF-o control group. Conclusions These preliminary data demonstrate the utility and nontoxic properties of the Ho:YSGG laser system for quick and precise ZP drilling.

Notes: Abstract The complex permeability and permittivity of the constituent materials of the microwave absorbers play a key role in determining the reflection or attenuation properties of the incident microwave. The real and imaginary (loss) components of μr and ɛr in the frequency range 1–12 GHz, and their relationship with microwave-absorbing properties, have been investigated in the NiZnCo ferrite composites. The composite specimens were prepared by moulding and curing a mixture of prereacted ferrite powder and silicone rubber. The quantitative estimation of microwave-absorbing properties was made by plotting the observed material constants (μr, ɛr) on the calculated solution map of impedance-matching. It was found that the CoO content influences the first matching frequency and the first matching thickness in the NiZnCo ferrite composites, but does not influence the second matching frequency and second matching thickness.

Notes: Abstract This report describes the environmental sample treatment techniques for14C measurement with liquid scintillation counter. The groundwater sample of about 80 liters was collected from well and inorganic carbon was removed by acidification and recirculated gas stripping with the extraction efficiency of more than 98%. The biological samples were freeze-dried and combusted to carbon dioxide in high pressure combustion unit with a combustion efficiency of nearly 99%. The14CO2 in the stack effluents was collected by an air bubbler with a collection efficiency of more than 99% for a sampling time of two weeks. Sampling of14C in reduced form also has been done by passing the gases through a tube furnace with Pt/Al and Pd/Al catalyst. Active and passive sampling methods for atmospheric14C measurements were compared in detail, and it could be concluded that the uncertainty associated with passive sampling method was quite acceptable for environmental monitoring. The CO2 trapped in NaOH was precipitated as BaCO3, and subsequently reconverted to CO2 for environmental samples and transferred to Carbo-Sorb ETM for liquid scintillation counting. In case higher precision is the deciding factor, benzene synthesis would be employed with home-made benzene synthesizer.
