Notes: A summary of recent and future developments in metallic ion production with an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) at GANIL is presented. Multicharged metallic ions are routinely produced with an ECRIS (ECR4 14 GHz) and accelerated for nuclear and atomic physics experiments. We present the various methods which have been used to generate these multicharged metallic ions. The accelerator requires stable beams for periods of weeks. The results obtained recently by direct ion plasma sputtering of Ni, Nb, and U samples are remarkable and stable beams from these metals have been delivered continuously for weeks. A pulsed EXCIMER laser, injecting a beam axially through the extraction hole of the ECRIS, has been tested for ablation on a rotating uranium target for uranium beam production. The metal ions from volatile compounds technique using volatile compounds has been also tested with ferrocene [Fe(C5H5)2] to produce multicharged Fe ions. We plan to install a third high voltage platform using an ECRIS totally built with permanent magnets. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary The venous boundaries of the subdural supravermian space and the displacements of the superior vermian vein in cases of hernia of the superior vermis are described. The authors emphasize the importance of the venous phase in vertebral angiography which alone leads to the identification of the limits of the subdural supravermian space.

Notes: Summary The authors describe an automatic system used in a chromatography laboratory to control simutaneously several gas chromatographs; this system has been intended for the accurate quantitative analysis of very different gaseous mixtures and designed to run the whole work involved in the execution of various complex analysis processes according to the operator's instructions. In particular the most utilized method consists in running repeated analyses in order to compare a sample and one or several standards. In addition to the works of acquisition, reduction and processing in real time of data which can be simultaneously delivered by seven gas chromatographs — some of which having several detectors — the system automatically performs the following operations: - control of the inlet system (injection, vacuum, sampling) according to the method defined by the operator, - automatic measurements of temperature and pressure of the gas injected in every unit; these values being necessary for the calculation of concentrations of the different gases, - statistic interpretation of the results obtained in order to improve the quality of measurements. The system includes as central element a medium size computer with 12K words of 16 bits memory. Operations are carried out under a real time executive program which links the different sequences. The operational characteristics of the described system as well as the great diversity of the analyses which can be performed should allow this system to find good many applications both in research and in industry.

Notes: We present the results of ab initio calculations on the first-, second-, and third-order molecular polarizabilities of urea. An efficacious general finite field perturbation approach, previously applied in the case of paranitroaniline, is extended to the evaluation of axial and nonaxial components of the nonlinear responses. The validity of our numerical procedure is examined at the Hartree-Fock level of theory by comparison with analytical derivative results. The impact of electron correlation is analyzed, by calculating the optical nonlinearities at the Moller-Plesset perturbation theory level. The second-order Moller-Plesset electron correlation correction is shown: (i) to enhance the third-order polarizability y by almost a factor of 2 and (ii) to include the major correlation effects as consideration of the fourth-order correction further improves the y components by less than 20%. We also discuss the frequency-dependence of the nonlinear optical properties of urea by presenting calculations of the dynamic components at the noncorrelated level of theory for different optical processes. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
