Notes: Synthetic LH-releasing hormone (LH-RH) was used as a pituitary function test in amenorrhoeic women. A dose of 12.5 μm U g. was administered intravenously and serum LH was measured by radioimmunoassay before and at 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes after injection. Four principle types of reaction were defined and correlated with the therapeutic response to ovulation-inducing compounds.

Notes: The effects of prostaglandin F2α on the function of the human placenta has been studied during induction of labour in prolonged pregnancies. The serum levels of human chorionic somatomammotrophin, human chorionic gonadotrophin, progesterone and heat-stable alkaline phosphatase were estimated at short intervals. There were no significant changes during the administration of various doses of PGF2α when compared with spontaneous labour. No adverse effects of this compound on placental function have been observed.

Notes: Summary Isoxsuprinum, Dipyridamol and Nicotinic-acid-preparations were administered by intravenous drip in the third trimester of 7 normal and 18 pathological pregnancies. The influence of these drugs was checked by determining estriol- and pregnandiol-excretion in the urine of 24 hours; and HCG, HPL, Progesterone and heat-stable alcaline Phosphatase in the mother's serum. In no case were we able to demonstrate any improvement of the feto-placental unit.

Notes: Summary The predictive efficacity of the heat-stable alkaline phosphatase (HSAP) for monitoring the placental function was studied in 2029 serum samples from 350 women. In normal pregnancies there was usually a continuous increase of the HSAP activity. In 85% of the pregnancies complicated by hypertension or EPH-gestosis with significant placental dysfunction, values above or below the normal range or marked changes of the slowly rising trend in serial estimations could be found. The same observations, however, were made in about 30% of these cases without apparent insufficiency of the placenta and in 20% of the normal cases. Generally the predictive value seemed to be better between the 26th and 36th week than near term. It was concluded that the estimation of the HSAP activity may be used as a very simple screening method in normal and pathological pregnancies. Abnormal results, however, should rather signal a strict monitoring and not therapeutic decisions.
