Notes: Abstract  Two potato varieties, Rustica and Desiree, were tested for a genetic modification consisting of a granule bound starch synthase (gbss) gene in antisense orientation combined with the endogenous B33 promoter and parts of the pBIN 19 plasmid vector including the neomycin phosphotransferase II (nptII) gene as a marker. Various polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were constructed for vector sequences, target inserts and the marker gene. At first no products with the predicted target-insert size were obtained. However, a long-template PCR combined with a nested PCR led to the expected amplification product in the Desiree variety. Results were confirmed by a restriction endonuclease digest, Southern blotting of fragments and by biochemical tests. The potato variety Rustica showed no target insert sequences on molecular analysis, nor did biochemical methods indicate modifications of the phenotype (i.e. reduced amounts of gbss protein and amylose). Only vector sequences and the marker gene were detected by the PCR method.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents an analysis of interactions of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) by using the principles of bidirectional communication theory. This theory of Marko and Neuburger is a generalization of Shannon's information theory and allows the description of the dominance relations of a two-partner situation. In the present case the observed behavioural sequences nearly correspond to Markoff chains of the 4th order. Two typical strategies regarding the exercise of dominance were observed during a change in dominance between two animals. A comparison with respective findings on social psychology is possible.

Notes: Summary The length of the free-running periods of circadian leaf movements in the primary and secondary pulvini of Phaseolus coccineus was measured in constant darkness (DD) and continuous light (LL) of different intensities. The periods for the two pulvini do not differ from each other in DD and LL 30000 lx. However, they differ in LL 60 lx, 600 lx and 6000 lx, indicating a state of internal desynchronization. These results show a difference in the light intensity dependence of the 2 oscillations and a lack of mutual synchronization between them.

Description / Table of Contents: Skeletal Rearrangements under Electron Impact, VI. Studies on the Alkyl- and Hydrogenmigration in Diphenic Acid Derivatives, III4)On electron impact derivatives of biphenyl with alkoxy substituents in 2- and 6-position show cleavage of the central C-C-bridge. Thereby formally an alkylene group is transferred from the eliminated radical to the resulting fragment ion. In the case of methyl 6.2'.6'-trimethoxybiphenyl-2-carboxylate the rearrangement ion forms the base peak. Derivatives with only one ortho substituent in both rings also exhibit the rearrangement, here the 2'-methoxy-biphenyl-2-carboxylic acid displays the most abundant rearrangement ion.

Description / Table of Contents: On Tanning Compounds from the Wood of Chestnut and Oak, VI. The Structure of VescalaginVescalagin, a crystalline tanning compound from the wood of chestnut (Castanea sativa) and oak (Quercus sesseliflora), has the structure 1 and is therefore anomeric with castalagin (2). This structure is proved by comparing NMR-structural analysis of 1 and 2, and of its comparable pentadecamethyl-(1a, 2a), monoacetyl-pentadecamethyl- (1b, 2b) and hexadecaacetyl derivatives (1c, 2c) furthermore by the cleavage of pentadecamethyl-vescalagin (1a) with sodium methoxide/methanol solution to produce dimethyl (-)-2,3,4,2′,3′4′-hexamethoxy-6,6′-diphenate and the methyl ester of nonamethylneovescalin. A primary product from this cleavage reaction is isolated too and elucidated as the methyl ester of pentadecamethyl-neovescalagin (4a).

Description / Table of Contents: Elucidation of the Structure of C30H24O12-Procyanidins by 13C-NMR-SpectroscopyThe 13C-NMR spectra of the compounds 1-11 allow definitive differentiation between carbon atoms of the heteroring linking to C and to O. Thus, the spectra of the procyanidins having the formula C30H24O12 - A1 and A2, isolated from cranberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) and A2 isolated from the horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) - show that there is C-C linking to C-4 and C-O bonding to C-2, as illustrated in structure 1.

Description / Table of Contents: On Tanning Compounds from the Wood of Chestnut and Oak, V. The Structure of VescalinThe tanning compound vescalin isolated from the wood of chestnut (Castanea sativa) and oak (Quercus sesseliflora) has structure 2a and is anomeric to castalin. This structure is proved by acid hydrolysis to flavogallonic acid (1a) and D-glucose, and also by NMR-structural analysis as well as mass spectroscopic measurements of 2b-d. With sodium methoxide/methanol 2b produces the neovescalin derivative 3a, the structure of which is elucidated in the same manner.
