Notes: The transmission of neutrons through a tapered channel is analyzed and the relationships among various parameters such as the distance between reflections and the polar and grazing angles of a trajectory at each reflection are established. These relationships are used in a simulation to study the transmission characteristics of a cylindrical tapered channel. The transmission, the transmitted beam angular divergence and the number of reflections are determined for different values of the taper angle and the incident beam divergence. The simulation results for the straight channel agree exactly with the derived analytical expressions. Those for the tapered channels can be described using the same expressions but with a lower effective critical angle. This reduced critical angle depends on the length of the taper and on the taper angle. For long gentle tapers, the reduction in critical angle is equal to the reduction in channel diameter.

Notes: Summary Exogenous spondylodiscitis is a rare event and is usually iatrogenic. Non-iatrogenic exogenous spondylodiscitis has been described in the literature following transabdominal gunshot wounds associated with injury to the intestines and spine. Several cases of traumatic meningitis and one of a traumatic meningocele following an injury of the spinal sac have been reported. No report of exogenous spondylodiscitis complicating a stabwound has been published. This is a report of exogenous spondylodiscitis following a paravertebral stabwound with a knife in association with a superior wedge fracture of L2.

Notes: Abstract Phenol-water extraction of Rhizobium loti NZP2213 cells allowed a simultaneous isolation of two structurally different lipopolysaccharides from the aqueous (LPS-W) and phenol (LPS-P) phase that differed in their sodium deoxycholate-PAGE pattern and composition. LPS-W showed a profile indicating an R-type LPS; LPS-P had a cluster of poorly resolved bands in the high-molecular-weight region. LPS-P contained large amounts of 6-deoxy-l-talose (6dTal), and a small amount of 2-O-methyl-6-deoxy-talose (molar ratio ∼30:1), both of which were completely absent in LPS-W. Methylation analysis gave only one major product, 2,4-di-O-methyl-6dTal, indicating that the O-chain is composed of a homopolymer of 1,3-linked 6dTal, having the methylated 6dTal (2-O-Me-6dTal) probably localized at the non-reducing end of the O-chain. This homopolymeric O-chain was additionally O-acetylated, as evidenced by GC-MS and by 13C NMR analysis. The lipid A moieties of both LPS-W and LPS-P showed almost identical composition, with six different 3-OH fatty acids and with two, so far not described, long-chain 4-oxo-fatty acids, all being amide-linked, and with 27-OH-28:0 as the main ester-linked fatty acid. Lipid A was of the lipid ADAG-type, i.e., having a (phosphorylated) 2,3-diamino-2,3-dideoxy-d-glucose-containing lipid A backbone. Lipid ADAG is widespread among species of the α-2 group of Proteobacteria, but has so far not been encountered in any other rhizobial or agrobacterial species.

Notes: Summary Clinical and radiological examination of 167 hemispherical spondylosclerosis (HSS) patients (56 male, 111 female) revealed a total of 186 cases of HSS with multiple incidences occurring in 18 patients. Radiologically these HSS cases were characterized by erosion and new bone formation at the inferior and upper end plate of the vertebra below, periosteal bone apposition or ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament, spondylophytes, and signs of degenerative alteration of the vertebra and disc. In addition, the size and location (anterior, middle, posterior third) of each HSS in the lateral view was investigated. The cases were also investigated for reflection phenomenon between supra- and infradiscal sclerosis and for kyphotic angulation of the two adjacent vertebrae. The results showed that in 105 cases (56.5%) the HSS filled out the entire vertebral area; 97 cases (52.2%) showed a mirror-image type HSS; while in 8 cases (4.3%), the infradiscal sclerosis was polymorphic. In 81 cases (43.5%), the sclerosis was limited to the anterior two-thirds; this is termed “two-thirds” type. All 81 of these cases of HSS showed a kyphotic angulation of at least 4°. Of these, 61 (32.8% of the total) showed reflection phenomenon while 20 (10.7% of the total) had polymorphic infradiscal sclerosis. Overall, 158 cases of HSS (85%) exhibited the reflection phenomenon between supra- and infradiscal sclerosis. whereas 28 cases (15%) revealed polymorphic sclerosis of the subadjacent vertebra. Kyphotic angulation was completely absent when HSS was visible in the entire vertebra. A dorsal gap of the disc space was seen in 36 cases (19.4%). A biomechanical classification of HSS is presented in order to help differentiate between centric and eccentric segmental load transfer.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary There is given a report of two cases with “stippled epiphyses”. One of these girls could be followed up over a period of 41/2 years. We were able to state a good tendency of compensation the shortening of limbs. There was, too, to observe by X-rays an involution of the calcareous splashes around the epiphyses after the 1st year. In this case-report the clinical dates and radiographic findings are exactly described. Furthermore ophthalmological changings (cataracta congenita, microophthalmia) are explained which depend on the gravity of the disease. As to the etiology there is supposed an alteration in the germ-plasm and a recessive inheritance. An additional exogenous damage of the embryo's genes is discussed concerning the development of gristle respectively the formation of ecto- and mesoderm. It might have been the causative factor in our cases. Disorders in the metabolism of calcium-phosphorus and mucopolysaccharids could be excluded. Handlings are given to differentiate the “stippled epiphyses” from the achondroplasia, the dysplasia epiphysialis multiplex and the cretinoid epiphysial dysgenesis.

Notes: Abstract  For 12 selected synoptic stations of the Greek Weather Service, the daily 12 UTC values of the thermal index Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) were calculated for the years 1980 to 1989. The locally varied occurrence of diverse thermal sensation and particularly of strong heat stress were analysed in relation to the human-biometeorological significance. With the help of a statistical model, PMV values of individual stations were transformed into a high-resolution bioclimatic map. The map presents the average annual number of days with at least strong heat stress (PMV〉3.0).

Notes: Abstract  The physiological equivalent temperature, PET, is a thermal index derived from the human energy balance. It is well suited to the evaluation of the thermal component of different climates. As well as having a detailed physiological basis, PET is preferable to other thermal indexes like the predicted mean vote because of its unit (°C), which makes results more comprehensible to urban or regional planners, for example, who are not so familiar with modern human-biometeorological terminology. PET results can be presented graphically or as bioclimatic maps. Graphs mostly display the temporal behaviour of PET, whereas spatial distribution is specified in bioclimatic maps. In this article, some applications of PET are discussed. They relate to the evaluation of the urban heat island in cities in both temperate climates and warm climates at high altitude. The thermal component of the microclimate in the trunk space of a deciduous forest is also evaluated by PET. As an example of the spatial distribution of PET, a bioclimatic map for Greece in July (Mediterranean climate) is presented.

Notes: Abstract The structural elucidation of lipid A of the cell wall lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Rhodospirillum salinarum 40 by chemical methods and laser desorption mass spectrometry revealed the presence of a mixed lipid A composed of three different 1,4′bisphosphorylated β(1→6)-linked backbone hexosaminyl-hexosamine disaccharides, i.e. those composed of GlcN→GlcN, 2,3-diamino-2,3-dideoxy-d-Glc-(DAG)→DAG, and DAG→GlcN. Lipid A of R. salinarum contained preferentially 3-OH-18 : 0 and 3-OH-14 : 0 as amide-linked and cisΔ11–18 : 1 and c19 : 0 as ester-linked fatty acids. The mass spectra of the liberated acyl-oxyacyl residues proved the concomitant presence of 3-O-(cisΔ11–18 : 1)–18 : 0 and 3-O-(c19 : 0)-14 : 0 as the predominating diesters in this mixed lipid A. The glycosidically linked and the ester-linked phosphate groups of the backbone disaccharide were neither substituted by ethanolamine, phosphorylethanolamine, nor by 4-amino-4-deoxy-l-arabinose, in contrast to most of the enterobacterial lipid As. In the core oligosaccharide fraction, a HexA (1→4)HexA(1→5)Kdo-trisaccharide was identified by methylation analysis. The terminal HexA (hexuronic acid) is possibly 4-OMe-GalA, a component described here as an LPS constituent for the first time. LPS of R. salinarum showed a lethality in C57BL/10 ScSN (LPS-responder)-mice) of an order of 10–1–10–2 of that reported for Salmonella abortus equi LPS, and it was also capable of inducing TNFα and IL6 in macrophages of C57BL/10ScSN mice.
