Notes: The optical properties of inhomogeneously grown rough silver films have been analyzed on the basis of reflectance measurements. Data have been recorded within the wave number range 50 cm−1〈λ−1〈50 000 cm−1. The results are compared with compact and fairly smooth films, made from the same metal. Rough films reveal very low reflectance and high absorptivity values of nearly 1, at wave numbers (approximately-greater-than)200 cm−1. The reflectance of these films is peaking at the bulk plasma resonance hvp of silver at 3.87 eV. Smooth compact films, in contrast, show a pronounced minimum at the same energy. Based on an effective medium approach and available literature data, the dielectric function (DF) and absorption coefficient have been calculated. For rough films, the real part of the DF remains positive within the whole spectral range, but is negative for compact films below hvp, in agreement with published data. The calculated DF of the inhomogeneously grown films fully resembles the experimental observations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: These experiments and complementary electronic structure calculations seek to probe the early dissociation dynamics of N2O4 excited in the strong 186 nm ultraviolet absorption band. Laser photons of 199.7, 203, and 205 nm are used to dissociate N2O4 molecules expanded in a free jet. The emission from the dissociating molecules is dispersed in a spectrometer and collected with an optical multichannel analyzer (OMA). We observe a strong progression in ν3, the N–N stretching mode, consistent with electronic structure calculations and a previous observation of N–N bond fission leading to NO2 photoproducts in this band. We also observe emission to combination bands in ν4, the torsion, and ν5, the out-of-phase antisymmetric NO2 stretch, which we attribute to vibronic coupling to a σσ* excited state configuration. Analysis of our data allows for an assignment of the torsional frequency of N2O4. Around 200 nm nitric acid, nitromethane, and N2O4 all exhibit a similar absorption to an adiabatic surface that changes electronic character from πnb,OπNO2* at short O2N–R (R=CH3, OH, NO2) internuclear distances to nσ* at extended internuclear distances. We compare our present emission spectra of N2O4 with previous emission experiments on nitromethane to understand how the character of the Franck–Condon region of the excited states in these two molecules differ. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Increased eosinophil granule proteins have been described in serum and sputum samples of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). It has been assumed that eosinophil degranulation is enhanced in atopic subjects – as in asthmatics. Since in CF no differences in eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), eosinophil protein X (EPX), and eosinophil peroxidase between atopic and nonatopic subjects have been detected, we investigated whether major basic protein (MBP) is increased in serum and sputum samples derived from atopic (n=14) compared with nonatopic CF subjects (n=26). In CF patients, high mean serum (sputum) levels of ECP 29.7 μg/l (2.7 mg/l), EPX 53.7 μg/l (7.9 mg/l), and MBP 984.6 μg/l but low sputum MBP levels (57.4 μg/l) were measured. In addition, in serum and in sputum samples, a significant correlation between MBP and ECP (P〈0.03 and P〈0.0001, respectively) or EPX (P〈0.05 and P〈0.0004, respectively) was detected. By subdivision of the patients into allergic and nonallergic subjects, significant differences were found for serum MBP values only (mean 1382.2 μg/l vs 770.5 μg/l; P〈0.0001), but not for ECP or EPX serum levels or for eosinophil proteins in sputum. Although no differences between atopic and nonatopic CF patients in ECP and EPX were found, serum MBP levels were higher in patients sensitized to inhalant allergens than in nonsensitized subjects. These results indicate differential release of eosinophil granule proteins in peripheral blood from eosinophils, and they also indicate that MBP in serum likely is to be a better discriminator of atopy in CF.

Notes: Based on a preliminary screening of a collection of cruciferous crops, such as oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. ssp. oleifera Metzg.), oil radish (Raphanus sativus L. ssp. oleiferus DC.), and yellow mustard (Sinapis alba L.), some plants within the oil radish varieties showed resistance to the root-knot nematodes Meloidogyne hapla Chitwood and M. incognita (Kofoid & White) Chitwood. Resistance tests of S1 progeny of these selected genotypes revealed a quantitative nature of resistance to M. hapla. Only a few resistant individuals were found, but a significant effect of selection was observed. In contrast, the progenies of plants resistant to M. incognita showed a very low number of egg masses, suggesting that this resistance may be conferred by dominant major gene(s). The results indicate that resistance of oil radish to root-knot nematodes may be effective and may thus provide new possibilities for the management of M. hapla and M. incognita.

Notes: Abstract  Small colorectal carcinomas without morphological evidence of origin from an adenoma have been called ”de novo” carcinomas. As changes in the expression of the adhesion molecule CD44 and its variants have been described along the adenoma-carcinoma sequence in colorectal carcinoma, we compared patterns of CD44 expression in early de novo and ex-adenoma colorectal carcinomas by staining specimens from a group of early (pT1) colorectal carcinomas by immunohistochemistry for CD44 (standard and variant forms v3, v5, v6, v7, v7/8, v10). We evaluated carcinoma, adenoma (ex-adenoma cases), transitional mucosal areas and apparently nonneoplastic mucosa peripheral to the lesions (when present). A marked increase was seen in numbers and intensity of standard and variant forms of CD44 in carcinomatous areas compared with nonneoplastic mucosa in both groups, with no significant difference between the groups. However, adenoma areas of the ex-adenoma cases and the transitional mucosa of the de novo carcinomas had nearly identical staining patterns. Together with data from other molecular studies, this may be interpreted as evidence for an adenoma-type precursor lesion in so-called de novo colorectal carcinomas.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary. Patients who had undergone elective resection for primary colorectal cancer were included in a prospective study. The purpose of the study was to specify the current role of laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of colorectal cancer. Therefore, the reasons for performing the resection conventionally were documented under the general guideline that all colorectal cancer should be resected laparoscopically. Of 111 patients treated in 1995, only 22 underwent a laparoscopic resection and 4 patients a laparoscopic-assisted resection. Age, sex and tumor stage were comparable between groups. Operative time was longer in the laparoscopy group; duration of postoperative ileus and postoperative hospital stay were shorter. The most frequent indications for using a conventional approach were rectal cancer (n = 29), adhesions (n = 15), randomly selected patients (n = 14) and advanced cancer (n = 12). Cardiovascular risk factors were not so important. Laparoscopic techniques were only applied in a minority of patients with colorectal cancer (24–37 %). Laparoscopic sphincter-preserving surgery is currently not recommended for rectal cancer in the middle and lower rectum. General risk factors are rarely a contraindication for a laparoscopic approach.
