    Notes: Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in 19 healthy subjects as they completed two Sternberg (1969, American Scientist, 57, 421–457) memory tests. In separate sessions, either single digits (i.e., 0–9) or 10 abstract figures were used as stimuli. In both sessions, memory set sizes were 1 (M1), 2 (M2), or 4 (M4). The amplitude and latency of the parietal P400 and the frontocentral negativity preceding P400 varied significantly with set size, but only between M1 and M2, whereas reaction time increased dramatically from M1 to M2 and from M2 to M4. These findings challenge previous assertions that the ERPs reflect aspects of the exhaustive serial search proposed by Sternberg. A late parietal positivity (P620), which failed to vary with set size, was larger in response to figures than to digits and may represent the search for, or utilization of, semantic traces of the stimuli.

    Notes: Port-Access cardiac surgery is a recent technology that is undergoing rapid development. The learning curve associated with this technique is a challenge even for the skilled and experienced cardiac surgeon. Mainly because of femoral cannulation, the use of guidewires, and working through small incisions, Port-Access cardiac surgery contains certain pitfalls that are clearly associated with the technology involved. These pitfalls currently require troubleshooting, but as the technology progresses, this may become less of an issue. Communicating these pitfalls to others is important to help others to avoid or better manage complications and to contribute to improving the technology of Port-Access techniques.

    Notes: We have performed measurements of ac magnetic susceptibility χac as a function of temperature and magnetic field on polycrystalline specimens of Sm2−xCexCuO4−y (0.15≤x≤0.18) prepared from a sol-gel precursor. All the samples studied show a striking double resistive superconducting transition. One of the resistive transitions occurs at a higher temperature Tci and the other one at a lower Josephson-coupling temperature Tcj. Magnetic measurements reveal the appearance of superconductivity below Tcj which is evident from the resistive component χ″ which peaks only at Tcj. Measurements made on pellets and crushed samples with average grain size ∼1 μm show essentially the same features. This suggests that Josephson coupling occurs inside physical grains with dimensions close to 5 μm. We have also utilized the behavior of the peak in the χ″ component as a function of applied magnetic fields to build a H vs T phase diagram for these compounds. Some interesting features were observed in this H vs T phase diagram: (1) a Hα, α=2/3, dependence at low applied magnetic fields (H≤2 kOe) and high temperatures, and (2) an abrupt increase in the magnitude of the exponent at high fields and low temperatures. The behavior at low fields and high temperatures suggests that the magnetic response of the system is mainly controlled by a disordered Josephson network. Possible connections between these two different behaviors are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A compact fluorescence detector has been developed which allows to count slow, single Na atoms. By using glass fibers for the exciting and the fluorescence light we obtained free movability of the detector. The detection efficiency has been analyzed and optimized by an extensive investigation of all processes concerning the laser-induced fluorescence, especially the random walk of the atom, saturation effects, and optical pumping. Single atoms are identified by registration of photon bursts which stand out from the Poisson distributed background. An absolute calibration of the detection efficiency has been achieved by a time-resolved fluorescence measurement in combination with a corresponding Monte–Carlo simulation. Atomic fluxes well below 1 atom/s can be determined with an uncertainty of less than ±10%. Assuming a continuous flux of 1 atom/s with 25 m/s typically about 50% of these atoms are counted. The detector is an excellent tool for differential scattering experiments with slow atomic beams. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We investigated whether patients with contact allergy differed from non-contact-allergic, non-atopic controls with regard to genotype and phenotype of the polymorphic enzyme N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2). 55 contact-allergic patients recruited from the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) were compared to 85 controls from among local health care personnel. NAT2 activity was calculated from HPLC analysis of the ratio of the caffeine metabolites 5-acetylamino-6-formylamino-3-methyluracil (AFMU) and 1-methylxanthine (1MX) in the urine. NAT2 genotype was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A statistically significantly increased proportion of rapid acetylators was found in contact-allergic patients. This may have 2 possible implications: acetylation may enhance contact sensitization; or NAT2 status may be a genetic marker for contact sensitizability.

    Notes: We have studied the structural, magnetic, and transport properties of polycrystalline (Nd1−xGdx)1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y; x=0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.25, and 0.50; produced under different atmospheres and cooling rates after the reduction process. From x-ray analysis the T′-structure is preserved for all samples studied. We also found that quenched samples in argon atmosphere exhibit superconductivity below ∼22 K. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity ρ(T) displays a striking double resistive superconducting transition with no evidence of a zero resistance state down to 1.5 K. The electrical resistivity has a (approximate)20% drop at the upper critical temperature Tci followed by a plateau down to a lower temperature Tcj. While Tci is both weakly dependent on the Gd content and external applied magnetic field, the behavior of ρ(T) at low temperatures is strongly sensitive to the Gd concentration, excitation current, and applied magnetic fields. Also, the behavior of ρ(T) below (approximate)3 K is almost field independent. The magnetic susceptibility data χ(T) reveal superconductivity below Tci and a reentrantlike behavior at low temperatures where the magnitude of χ(T) increases rapidly with decreasing temperature. These observations are similar to those observed in granular Ga films close to the nonmetallic side of the superconductor-insulator transition. We argue that these compounds can be understood within the framework of a superconducting granular model. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Comparison of ultrastructures in Pliocene periplatform carbonates from the Bahamas with Silurian limestones from Gotland (Sweden) reveals that despite the differences in primary sediment composition and age, they reflect a similar mechanism of lithification. In both sequences calcite microspar was formed as a primary cement at an early stage of marine burial diagenesis. Neither significant compression nor meteoric influence are necessary for the formation of calcite microspar. A model is proposed for the process of microsparitic cementation of fine-grained aragonite needle muds comprising four stages: (1) unconsolidated, aragonite-dominated carbonate mud; (2) precipitation of microspar that engulfs aragonite needles; (3) dissolution of aragonite, resulting in pitted surfaces of the microspar crystals; and (4) slight recrystallization. Our results contradict the widespread opinion that microspar necessarily is a product of secondary recrystallization of a previously lithified micrite.

    Notes: The Internet, which began as a communication network controlled by the US Government, is a free and open international information superhighway. The number of Internet users and the variety of information found on the network have grown dramatically in the last decade. This rapid growth also occurred with minimal control of content or acceptable uses of the Internet. This study was designed to investigate the future of Internet regulation. Surveys were sent out to 510 Internet providers in 40 countries. Respondents indicated that some regulation may be necessary, but the cultural diversity in the world will make it difficult to implement.

    Notes: summary The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of stress on the open-close activity in mastication, using an animal model. For this, we have compared the single-motor activites of three muscles: anterior digastric (AD), anterior temporalis (AT) and the superficial masseter (MS) in different groups of rats classed according to emotional state and dental occlusion. The EMG graphs have been analysed by the method proposed by the Weijs & Dantuma (1975). The results show that a dominant action of the stress on the AD and a combined action of the stress and the occlusal state on AT and MS occur during a single mastication cycle. A supression of the reflex myotatic inhibition for AT and MS occured in the presence of an occlusal interference.
