Notes: Abstract. The distribution of the various cell wall and cell envelope (S-layer) polymers among the main lineages of the domain Archaea (Archaebacteria) and the chemical composition and primary structure of polymers forming rigid cell wall sacculi is described. Differences between bacteria and archaea in their sensitivity to antibiotics which inhibit cell wall synthesis in bacteria are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Problem: The data model given in the DICOM standard is examined unter the aspect of system integration. Semantic properties of the IODs (information object definitions) and their relationships are investigated. Method: Starting from the entities defined in Part 3 of the DICOM standard, we explored how the classes defined there can be integrated into a common data model of the electronic patient record implemented by the HIS (Hospital Information System). Based on the IODs we investigated the definitions and semantics of entities being relevant for structured recording of image data. Results: Because semantic definitions are incomplete, a proposal is made for the core domain of structured radiologic service recording. Its definition of semantics goes beyond the application domain of radiologic imaging to avoid structural conflicts during HIS/ RIS/PACS integration. Differentiation between treatment and billing provides an independent temporal mapping of services concerning medical and billing aspects. Two groups of radiologic services are distinguished: radiologic imaging and additional services. Conclusion: The incomplete definition of IOD semantics leads to potential conflicts during system integration. Complete covering of this topic is necessary for implementation of the electronic patient record.

Notes: Abstract We examined the abundance and spatial distribution of major phylogenetic groups of the domain Bacteria in hindguts of the Australian lower termite Mastotermes darwiniensis by using in situ hybridization with group-specific, fluorescently labeled, rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes. Between 32.0 ± 7.2% and 52.3 ± 8.2% of the DAPI-stained cells in different hindgut fractions were detected with probe EUB338, specific for members of the domain Bacteria. About 85% of the prokaryotic cells were associated with the flagellates of the thin-walled anterior region (P3a) and the thick wall of the posterior region (P3b/P4) of the hindgut, as shown by DAPI staining. At most, half of the EUB338-detected cells hybridized with one of the other probes that targeted a smaller assemblage within the bacterial domain. In most fractions, cells were found in varying numbers with probe ALF1b, which targeted members of the α-Proteobacteria, whereas substantial amounts of sulfate-reducing bacteria, gram-positive bacteria with a high DNA G+C content and members of the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium cluster of the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides (CFB) phylum could be detected only in the wall fraction of P3b/P4. This clearly indicates that the hindgut microhabitats differ in the composition of their microbial community. In situ hybridization of cryosections through the hindgut showed only low numbers of bacteria attached to the P3a wall. In contrast, the wall of P3b was densely colonized by rod- and coccus-shaped bacteria, which could be assigned to the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium cluster of the CFB phylum and to the group of gram-positive bacteria with a high DNA G+C content, respectively. Oxygen concentration profiles determined with microelectrodes revealed steep oxygen gradients both in P3a and P3b. Oxygen was consumed within 100 μm below the gut surface, and anoxic conditions prevailed in the central portions of both gut regions, indicating that oxygen consumption in the hindgut does not depend on the presence of a biofilm on the hindgut wall.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Problem: The formulation of requirements is necessary to control the goals of a PACS project. Furthermore, in this way, the scope of functionality necessary to support radiological working processes becomes clear. Method: Definitions of requirements and specification are formulated independently of systems according to the IEEE standard ’’Recommended Practice for Software Requirements Specifications’’. Definitions are given in the Request for Information, specifications in the Request for Proposal. Functional and non-functional requirements are distinguished. The solutions are rated with respect to scope, appropriateness and quality of implementation. Results: A PACS checklist was created according to the methods described above. It is published on the homepage of the ’’Arbeitsgemeinschaft Informationstechnologie’’ (AGIT) within the ’’Deutsche Röntgengesellschaft’’ (DRG) (http://www.uni-marburg. de/mzr/agit). Conclusion: The checklist provides a discussion forum which should contribute to an agreement on accepted basic PACS functionalities.

Notes: Abstract. We calculate the dipole amplitude for the decay $\mu\rightarrow e\gamma$ and related processes in the left-right supersymmetric model when parity breaking occurs at a considerably large scale. The low-energy flavor violation in the model originates either from the nonvanishing remnants of the left-right symmetry in the slepton mass matrix or from the direct flavor changing lepton-slepton-neutralino interaction. The result is found to be large and already accessible with current experimental accuracy for supersymmetric masses not far above the electroweak scale. It also provides nontrivial constraints on the lepton mixing in the model.

Notes: Summary 1. Some progesterone is synthesized within both the central and the peripheral nervous systems, where it regulates neurotransmission and important glial functions, such as the formation of myelin. Progesterone can thus be designated a “neurosteroid.” 2. Steroids act not only on the brain, but also on peripheral nerves, which offer many advantages to study the biological significance of locally produced neurosteroids: their remarkable plasticity and regenerative capacity and their relatively simple structure. 3. By using the regenerating mouse sciatic nerve as a model, we have shown that progesterone synthesized by rat Schwann cells promotes the formation of new myelin sheaths. Progesterone also increases the number of myelinated axons when added at a low concentration to cocultures of Schwann cells and sensory neurons. 4. These findings show a function on myelination for locally produced progesterone and suggest a new pharmacological approach of myelin repair.

Notes: Abstract  Isolated renal Aspergillus abscess is a very rare complication of HIV infection. It usually occurs in patients with severe immune deficiency. The case of a 29-year-old HIV-infected homosexual male, a nonintravenous drug abuser, who developed a right renal Aspergillus abscess despite normalization of the CD4+ cell count after highly active antiretroviral treatment is described. When antimicrobial treatment failed (amphotericin B followed by itraconazole), he was cured by right nephrectomy and remains in good health 3 months later with no recurrence. In cases of Aspergillus renal abscess in HIV-infected patients, surgery is the treatment of choice, especially in the current era of highly active antiretroviral therapy.
