Notes: Shape and composition of electrochemically etched tungsten tips for use in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) were investigated in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) with a Gathan imaging filter (GIP). The tips are prepared by a lamella drop-off technique. We observe typical tip radii of less than 10 nm. After a storage of some days under ambient conditions, an amorphous oxide film is detectable. The electron energy-loss spectroscopy confirms that the surface is contaminated by compounds that contain carbon, too. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A scanning tunneling microscope with a completely digital control is described which is able to determine in addition to the sample topography the local reactance of the surface by using a mathematical procedure. The new types of information allow a more detailed discussion of surface properties. The measurements were carried out at gold films on silicon wafers. On a plasma polymer gold composite surface typical reactance differences will be demonstrated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The voltage-displacement-characteristics of tube-shaped piezoscanners were determined and used for the calibration of the scanning range of a scanning probe microscope (SXM). Inside a scanning electron microscope the displacements were measured as a function of the voltage and analysed by an imaging system. The detection of non-linearities as well as the investigation of the dynamic properties are possible. The method may be useful for various applications, e.g., all SXM instrumentation as well as micropositioning devices. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Variations of the work-function differences between tip and sample over distance have been investigated by a special procedure with a scanning tunneling microscope. This procedure allows the measurement of displacement current Ic dependencies on the voltage U. For a Pt tip on a Au surface and for a W tip on a Pt surface, work-function differences among 0, 2 and 0, 6 eV were found. They increase with increasing distance. From the slope of the Ic(U) characteristics in different distances, the diameter of the tip is estimated. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: X-ray small- and medium-angle scattering of partially ordered or semicrystalline materials is composed of background scattering from the form scattering of the components and from the amorphous phase and of peaks from the scattering of the crystallites. By the slit geometry of X-ray diffractometers constructed for registration of small- and medium-angle X-ray scattering, the diffuse scattering and the peaks are distorted and the peak positions and half-widths are changed. A program module based on the Akima interpolation [Akima (1970). J. Assoc. Comput. Math. 17, 589–602] is proposed for calculation of the first derivative of the complete smeared scattering curve, which is then explicitly used in direct collimation correction procedures. The desmearing of scattering curves from semicrystalline starch samples proves the convenience of the method for low-noise conditions and exhibits a significant gain of measuring time in comparison with data of comparable accuracy but measured with Soller-slit collimation systems or desmeared with direct methods using frequency filtering.

Notes: Abstract In the present study, a total of 619 subgingival and extracrevicular samples from 66 early-onset periodontitis, 42 adult periodontitis/gingivitis and 36 treated Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans-associated periodontitis patients were selectively cultivated for presence of A. actinomycetemcomitans. The organism was recovered from 68% cases with early-onset periodontitis, 24% cases with adult periodontitis/gingivitis and 50% of treated patients. Associations between recovery from pooled subgingival plaque and samples from extracrevicular locations as well as between different extracrevicular samples, were not heterogeneous with regard to different groups with the exception for cheek/saliva comparisons (odds ratios: early-onset periodontitis 825; adult periodontitis 8.1; treated patients 117; 0.05〈p〈0.1). For associations between recovery of A. actinomycetemcomitans from pooled subgingival plaque/extracrevicular samples, Mantel-Haenszel's odds ratios of between 12.2 and 21.6 were calculated (p〈0.0001). The organism was isolated from 17 cheek mucosa samples of 18 patients identified as still harboring the organism after therapy. Present results point to the considerable value of cheek mucosa samples especially in treated patients to diagnose persistent A. actinomycetemcomitans colonization of the oral cavity.

Notes: Abstracts Postoperative radiation therapy following curative resection of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus was investigated in a prospective randomized study. A group of 33 patients received postoperative radiation therapy and were compared to a control group of 35 patients treated by surgery alone. No statistically significant differences were noted between the two treatment groups concerning overall and disease-free survival rates. Postoperative irradiation significantly increased the incidence of fibrotic strictures of the esophagogastric or esophagocolonic anastomoses and caused a delayed recovery of patients quality of life. Based on these results, we believe that postoperative radiation therapy alone cannot be advocated as a adjuvant therapy following curative resection of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus.

Notes: Abstract We report a search for γ rays emanating from Coulomb excitation of fast (30–46 MeV/u) radioactive projectiles8He,11,12,14Be interacting with a lead target. These are clearly identified by their Doppler shift. The 320 keV 1/2− → 1/2+ γ transition from11Be was observed with a cross-section of 191±26 mb which is noticeably less than expected from the known lifetime and in the perturbation limit of pure Coulomb excitation. In the other nuclei rather stringent upper limits of 0.01 to 0.2 Weisskopf units, are placed on the hypothetical transition to 1− states.

Notes: Abstract Objective Metabolic effects of different caloric regimens were investigated in nonsurgical, medical patients with multipleorgan failure (MOF). Design Seven total parenteral nutrition (TPN) regimens were administered, differing in amount (14, 28, and 56 kcal/kg per day, i.e., hypo-, iso-, and hypercaloric nutrition, respectively) and distribution [carbohydrates (COH), amino acids (AA), long-chain and mediumchain triglycerides (LCT/MCT)] of calories. Each regimen was administered over 12 h. Metabolism was monitored by energy expenditure (EE), body temperature (BT), protein breakdown (PB), and blood glucose and serum lactate levels. Measurements were started within 2 days of MOF onset. Setting The study was conducted in a medical intensive care unit.Patients: Twenty patients with MOF on mechanical ventilation (mean Apache II score $$\bar x$$ =26) were investigated. Measurements and results The mean values of the EE ( $$\bar x$$ =31 kcal/kg per day), BT ( $$\bar x$$ -38°C), PB ( $$\bar x$$ =1.5 g/kg per day), and lactate ( $$\bar x$$ =2.0 mmol/l) and glucose level ( $$\bar x$$ =222 mg/dl) parameters were elevated. EE, BT, and lactate and glucose levels were significantly lower under hypocaloric nutrition than during iso- and hypercaloric nutrition (p〈0.01). Differences in the metabilic effects of LCT and MCT were not significant. PB was significantly elevated under hypercaloric nutrition (p〈0.01). Protein balance was positive under hypercaloric nutrition, and negative under iso- and hypocaloric nutrition. Conclusions In nonsurgical, medical patients neither hypercaloric nor isocaloric nutritional support prevented protein catabolism; in contrast, they enhanced the metabolic burden measured by EE, thermogenesis, urea production rate, and glucose and lactate levels. A hypocaloric regimen is therefore recommended for these patients during the early phase of MOF.
