Notizen: Abstract The values of the angle-integrated cross section for the decay to various low-lying states in39K following the40Ca(γ,π) reaction at a mean photon energy of 60 MeV are reported on, together with the values of the reduced Legendre coefficientsa i . The40Ca(γ,gp) and40Ca(γ,n) reactions yield the same angular cross-section values and these agree with the corresponding RPA-calculations.

Notizen: Abstract The aetiopathology of extrahepatic portal vein obstruction is unknown. In retrospective studies, umbilical vein cannulation and sepsis have been alleged to cause portal thrombosis. This prospective study was undertaken to detect whether thrombosis and consequent obstruction of the splenoportal venous system develops after umbilical vein catheterization for exchange transfusion in newborns using Doppler ultrasound. Forty children (M = 24; F = 16) who had undergone exchange transfusion for hyperbilirubinaemia were studied at school age. Maximal duration of the venous umbilical cannulation was 120 min and sepsis did not occur. Clinical, biological and sonographic examinations were normal, except in 3 children. In 2 the left branch of portal vein could not be identified (normal variant). Conclusion Our results show that, in these children, umbilical vein catheterization did not lead to development of portal vein thrombosis. However, when other risk factors such as umbilical infection, traumatic catheterization are associated, children should be screened for obstruction of the portal vein.

Notizen: Abstract Objective: To examine the secular trend of weight, height and obesity among young Portuguese males at the time of military inspection for national conscription purposes in the region of Lisbon, during the last thirty years. Design: Cross-sectional study, based on the review of military census files. Setting: Military selection centre of Lisbon. Subjects and methods: In Portugal, military service is obligatory and medical inspections are carried out every year on males at the age of twenty. For study purposes, representative samples were taken from the young male population undergoing inspection for the Armed Forces on a five year basis, between 1960 and 1990 in the region of Lisbon. Weight and height were evaluated by a trained team, using standard measurement instruments and procedures. Results: A progressive and significant increase in weight, height and BMI of the young male population was found between 1960 and 1990. For certain variables the increase was also statistically significant within a five-year period, as it was the case for height between 1965–1980 and for weight between 1985–1990. The increase in BMI experienced some minor fluctuation along the reference period, however, it was statistically significant between 1985–1990. The increase in weight and in BMI was greater in the highest percentiles and particularly noticeable between 1985 and 1990. The percentage of young males with BMI over 25 kg/m2 was of 8.1% in 1960 and of 18.0% in 1990, while those having a BMI over 27 kg/m2 varied between 3.6% and 6.4% in the same period, respectively. The percentage of young adult males with BMI higher than 25 kg/m2 doubled between 1960 and 1990.

Notizen: Abstract The Tagus estuary, located at the western Iberian coast in front of Lisbon is the largest one in Portugal, where it drains highly populated and industrialised regions. The amount of sediment transported by this river is so great that the submarine delta is one of the largest in the Iberian margin, very well defined and reaching the 70m isobath. The geochemical pattern of the muddy deposit off the Tagus river has been determined by elemental analyses of bulk surficial sediments, collected at the Portuguese margin adjacent to the Tagus estuary. Measurements were carried out by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). Sediments were usually composed of fine particles (silts and clays) and were high in organic matter (measured as loss on ignition). Elemental concentrations for Zn and Ph clearly indicate an estuarine contamination probably associated with discharges from urban centers or due to the influence of the industries located downstream. apparently the depletion on the Cu contents is caused by its release (soluble complexes) into the marine environment. Variations observed in the elemental distribution of the sediments of the Tagus with distance from the estuary seem to be dependent on the grain size distribution related to the dynamics of the sediment transport.
