    Notes: Abstract The competition between fusion-fission and deeply inelastic reactions in the Cl + Ni system has been studied by investigating the exit channelQ-value dependence of theZ-distributions of fission-like fragments. TheZ-, kinetic energy- and angular distributions of the fission-like fragments produced in the37Cl +64Ni system atE lab=170, 186 MeV and in the28Si +74Ge system atE lab=176 MeV have been measured by counter telescopes. TheZ-distribution of the37Cl +64Ni system was found to be essentially the same as that of the35Cl +62Ni system at the same bombarding energy. It is shown that this result can not be explained by the statistical fusion fission model but is consistent with a deeply inelastic model. A systematic study of the fission-like phenomenon in this mass region indicates that the maximum angular momenta for fusion reactions as well as the minimum angular momenta for DIC can be reproduced by the Bass model in the sliding limit (f=1.0) while the maximum angular momenta for fully energy-damped deeply inelastic reactions are governed by the strong interaction radius as predicted by the successive critical distance fusion model. The significance of these results are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Objective was to study the significance and the mechanism of action of elastase from polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN elastase) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The experiments conducted consisted of two phases. Firstly, articular cartilage and synovia from 8 patients with RA undergoing total knee replacement were obtained, and the gelatinolytic enzyme activity was extracted with 2M guanidine hydrochloride. The gelatinolytic activity of each tissue was measured to confirm that the activity was due to PMN elastase by using an antihuman leukocyte elastase antibody. Secondly, the levels of PMN elastase-α1 proteinase inhibitor complex (EIC) in the blood and synovial fluid of 170 patients with RA were measured by immunoassay. The results were as follows: 1. Gelatinolitic activity was shown to be mainly due to PMN elastase, and found to be highest in cartilage and synovia in RA joints. 2. The EIC levels in plasma of RA patients were significantly higher than those in gout and osteoarthritis (OA), and the EIC levels increased according to the stage of articular cartilage destruction. Moreover, the EIC levels in synovial fluid of RA patients were higher compared to those of OA patients. The activity of PMN elastase was elevated in destructive joints of RA. With the progression of articular cartilage destruction, EIC levels in plasma of RA patients increased as well. We suggest that PMN elastase may play a significant role in RA disease.

    Notes: Abstract The emergence of superoxide anion radicals (O2-) in the guinea pig inner ear following acoustic trauma was investigated by histochemical methods. Five minutes after exposure to sound at 120–125 dB SPL for 3 h, an O2- reaction product was detected in the cochlea along the luminal membrane of the marginal cells of the stria vascularis. This reaction product could not be found at 30 min, but reappeared at 2 h. The first appearance of O2- is not explainable by our studies, but the second appearance may be related to recirculation of strial blood flow after blood flow stasis. The present observations raise the possibility that free radicals are produced in the inner ear after acoustic trauma and lead to inner ear damage.
